This began as a commission for @ehentalix and sorta took over into a steadily escalating freight train.

What would happen if Steven died? What if his gem lived on without him? What would he be? What would he feel? Would he even be Steven?

Personally, I think of him as an empty slate.

If the gems are computer-ESC, (I mean, heck, Pearl’s song in the movie may as well been a windows program) When Rose made Steven I’d imagine she unintentionally cleaned away the programming by doing so. Unlike other gem’s he didn’t wake up able to walk. He wasn’t born knowing what he was supposed to do or how to do it. No, he just was a baby. He was human. His gem was empty of knowledge, of its base files. He wasn’t programmed.  

So if that humanity in him died. If that piece of Steven that made him empathetic, that made him, him…

…What would be left but an empty shell?

steven kept trying to make the gems relive horrible events to bring their memories back but it didn’t work for any of them. they realised who they were through friendship, growth, love and freedom. their trauma does not define them. your trauma does not define you.

I've seen some people saying that Pink could have intended to come back for Spinel or at least didn't understand how leaving her behind would impact her mentally

I think Drift Away shows that Pink knew exactly what she was doing and willingly left her playmate (interesting how yellow called her pink's playmate and not her friend) alone in the garden because she was bored with her, and while you can see remorse in her face, she went through with it because she didn't want Spinel to come with her to Earth.

And this next part is a theory but still worth adding

Pearl was genuinely surprised and shocked to see Spinel. She seemed like it was impossible for her to be there. What did Pink say to Pearl as an excuse for Spinel not to join them?
