he knows they have kissed before, and he knows it has happened quite extraordinarily. because he was drunk, and she was there. but she’s always been there, even when junmyeon leaves the city to gather his thoughts or randomly disappears without telling her. it’s the way he handles things, the way his life works because his passion is a detail in his life that he finds pleasure in, much like the beauty that he’s able to create with a simple piece of paper and a ballpen. and she somehow, hana has managed to bring back a piece of the happiness he’s been deprived of the last few years.
and maybe it’s what makes him want to protect her too because she’s too innocent and gullible for her own good. but those are character traits he has come to cherish and appreciate, as is it her spirit that allows him to feel truly happy, if only for just a moment. but emotions are fragile, and happiness is nothing else but a mere feeling, one that’s too delicate and sensitive to be always present. it’s not what he longs for, of course not. he knows what this this feeling he has is meant to represent, and he knows that it comes with both good and bad sides.
but isn’t she going to be the one to suffer the most? he doesn’t want that happening, doesn’t want himself to be the cause of both her future unhappiness and present bliss. but when he hears her speaking, it’s like his mind is wiped clean of all doubts, concerns and thoughts. the only thing he’s capable of focusing on is her sweet voice, her features that display genuine sincerity and the way she carries herself, hesitant but determined at the same time. and before she even tells him what exactly is on her mind, he knows.
somehow, it’s both a dream and a nightmare coming true and it’s so hard to figure out what to do in this moment. the only thing he does is step a bit closer and pull her into an embrace, because junmyeon just needs the physical closeness and the calming influence she brings into his life.
"you’re so silly, hana." a chuckle emits from his lips as his hand flies up to cup the back of her head. his voice is weak, because as much as he wishes to say the exact same words to her; he doesn’t know if he can. “you sincerely do deserve someone much better. someone who’ll take care of you, who will sit by your side when times get hard. not someone who can’t always be there, who has to put other things first. why would you choose me, out of everyone?”
His words tug at her heart a considerable amount, simply because she knows what she wants to say, but she is afraid to say it — because it might be too early, or even too late. but how she feels is how she feels, and over the 2 months and some time they’ve known one another ( she stops to think — has it really been two months ? ), she knows that her feelings have stemmed and blossomed, and become the fruit of something she’s never experienced before, but something she is positive can’t be anything else.
they are opposites, though she surely can argue that of course there is good in him, but she is open, and warm, and he seems to be more reserved and cold. and there’s nothing necessarily wrong about that. it’s the way he is, the way he’s come to be — like the outer shell that protects his interior from those who mean harm to him. but to hana, that is a beautiful thing, because it makes all the time a person would spend wanting to know him all the more worth it. it makes it all the more meaningful — and it shows the ones who really care to know who he is.
and she knew from the start of slowly getting closer to him that this could happen, but she usually sees everyone with a platonic love, a love that goes no further then if she were a doting sister. but this — this is a love that makes her want to slowly become one with him, to use their strengths and build on their weaknesses — together. and she knows there are things about him that might not necessarily be perfect, but she loves them anyway. she loves him anyway.
❝ i really don’t think there is anyone better … for me. because i … ❞ she holds her breath for a moment, and her hazel eyes look into his, and they say the words for her, but she knows it’s not the same — she knows she has to.

The comment surprises her, and renders her speechless for a moment. her lips press together thoughtfully, and her eyes fall just the same.
❝ i … would disagree. ❞ she says softly, ❝ i’m a big girl, i know what i need. and — if i didn’t need you, i wouldn’t miss you every time you were gone. i wouldn’t look forward to the day you return — and i wouldn’t want to just hold you in my arms as much as i do. i do need you — i would say that you’re exactly what i need. ❞ her voice had been soft, but firm, and her eyes had returned to meet his through her words, her expression softened, like the velvety petals of a rose.
❝ you’re just about everything i need. ❞
Her words don’t necessarily surprise him. Hana’s soft, has been this way ever since he met her and something else also tells him she’s uncapable of being mean. The female’s kind and good, basically everything he isn’t, and it’s not fair to her to be stuck with someone like him. It’s not because he’s pitying himself, or what has become of him but more the fact that she, as a person full of brightness with a heart of gold, deserves better.
A sad smile tugs at the right corner of his lips. The need to embrace her is steadily rising, but he pushes away; he remembers the last time he’s gotten too close to someone, and it ended with heartbreak on the wrong end. It’s been years since that happened, and now he’s smarter. If he is capable of preventing it, he won’t allow her to go through the same hell that he’s already so accustomed to.
“You deserve better, Hana. Much better, in fact.”

The click of his tongue was the only answer given, before he moved his head to the side to get a better view of the other as a smile adorned the older’s features. Truthfully, it never failed to amaze Junmyeon to see Baekhyun beaming with so much happiness. While they certainly hadn’t been the best of friends throughout all the years they’ve known each other, their friendship was now one of the most treasured ones in his life, so to see happiness in the younger’s eyes served to brighten up his own spirits as well. “Don’t hug that pillow too tightly. You might wanna use that skill on whoever’s holding your heart captive.”
A groan emitted from his lips upon hearing the renowned nickname before his own hands got hold of a smaller pillow. As a result, it was thrown at Baekhyun’s head before Junmyeon himself let out a small chuckle. “You’re too noisy, Baek. And you make it sound like you’d prefer ripping that hear out of your chest to gift it to someone else. Now, that’s just gross.”
He surely was only teasing, especially given the unusual brightness the other man radiated. But this was what they friendship was like, dysfunctional at times but harmony always managed to be part of it. For some reason, it was good that way because they could be honest, they could fuck things up and could still go back to one another if someone ever needed to talk.

“No, oppa, I don’t want it back,” he replied, childishly peeking out from behind the pillow in his arms. The mood change was immediate at the mention of his extraordinary happiness and his eyes twinkled brightly. He hadn’t even told Junmyeon, but it was probably so terribly obvious with the way he practically bubbled with happiness. It had been such a long time since he was so happy and it was ridiculous— to the point that one had to wonder if he was ever upset, in his entire life. With someone like Junmyeon— through the sixteen years of knowing one another, the other seemed to read him like a book and he didn’t need to tell him. He just knew. And it was perfect.
He didn’t think he could coherently tell the other, anyway. Especially considering his happiness at this point— already building up again, as if he were a child who was promised ice cream. Almost anyone would probably feel an incoming headache— an excited Baekhyun was a little bit… special. He squeezed the pillow in his arms and he failed at trying to hide his smile.
“Hearts still aren’t practical—” he’s trying so hard to keep himself calm, “That’s why we give them away, oppa!”
