-he’s a little bit emotionally constipated

-years as a soldier, losing your parents young, and having to grow up far too quickly can do that to do

-he tries so, so hard with you though because he really loves you

-you had two dogs before you had kids, and it was seeing him coo at them and spend hours outside throwing a ball and applauding when they ran it back that convinced you he was cut out to be a father

-he often had to spend weeks away in edinburgh, and your house had become a literal greenhouse from all the flowers he sent while he was gone

-when he came home, he’d hold you close for a long time, burying his face in your hair and whispering that he loved you

-it was hard for him to say those three words, so you appreciated them even more

-you two got married early on, after ten months of being together

-the way he looked at you on your wedding day is one you have seared and kept in your mind forever, a mix of wonder and disbelief

-he likes to do menial, domestic things with you

-he’ll go grocery shopping with you happily, cracking jokes about how the fish heads still have eyes and pretending to launch lemons at you from behind the counter

-sometimes you’ll clean the kitchen together, him washing the dishes while you organize the cabinets, and you’ll make small talk all the while, and it’s moments like that which help him feel connected to you

-having your first child helped him see you in an entirely new light; he already knew you were steadfast and reliable, but seeing you as a mother made him realize how strong you really were

-you made him more stable, and sometimes he’d catch a glimpse of you wrangling the kids and laughing, and he’d realize he’d have never had the personality capable of growing old with someone if it weren’t for you
