replacing all coal generation with natural gas generation is one of the biggest chunks of carbon dixoide emissions that you can remove, and would reduce ocean mercury and other kinds of pollution
this requires an enormous increase in natural gas production and shipping infrastructure
replacing coal with nuclear or renewables would of course reduce CO2 emissions even more. Imo the main priority of climate legislation and funding, like th ebest way to achieve its stated purpose, would be to support the replacement of coal with nuclear. But this isn't happening, and adding more wind and solar to the grid leaves the question of what to do when the sun's not shining and the wind's not blowing, and right now the main solution is natural gas. Also battery storage, also pumped hydro, but natural gas is what can, and is, being deployed at the necessary scale. Pumped hydro is limited by geography, batteries are (at least for now) limited by manufacturign capacity and ultimately by availability of lithium. What you can do now is replace coal with wind and solar plus natural gas peaker plants that ramp up production during low renewables generation.
Interference with natural gas extraction and shipping is interference with the replacement of coal. Very directly, if you want to see causality you can see how a shock to natural gas supply in Germany led immediately to them extending coal plant lifetimes. (though ofc they were in that situation cause htey shut down nuclear, which was stupid)
