Tiffany couldn't quite work out how Miss Level got paid. Certainly the basket she carried filled up more than it emptied. They'd walk past a cottage and a woman would come scurrying out with a fresh-baked loaf or a jar of pickles, even though Miss Level hadn't stopped there. But they'd spend an hour somewhere else, stitching up the leg of a farmer who'd been careless with an axe, and get a cup of tea and a stale biscuit.
It didn't seem fair.
“Oh, it evens out,” said Miss Level, as they walked on through the woods.
“You do what you can. People give what they can, when they can. Old Slapwick there, with the leg, he's as mean as a cat, but there'll be a big cut of beef on my doorstep before the week's end, you can bet on it. His wife will see to it. And pretty soon people will be killing their pigs for the winter, and I'll get more brawn, ham, bacon and sausages turning up than a family could eat in a year.”
“You do? What do you do with all that food?”
“Store it,” said Miss Level.
“But you-”
“I store it in other people. It's amazing what you can store in other people.” Miss Level laughed at Tiffany's expression. “I mean, I take what I don't need round to those who don't have a pig, or who're going through a bad patch, or who don't have anyone to remember them.”
“But that means they'll owe you a favour!”
“Right! And so it just keeps on going round. It all works out.”
“I bet some people are too mean to pay-”
“Not pay,” said Miss Level, severely. “A witch never expects payment and never asks for it and just hopes she never needs to. But, sadly, you are right.”
“And then what happens?"
“What do you mean?”
“You stop helping them, do you?”
“Oh, no,” said Miss Level, genuinely shocked. “You can't not help people just because they're stupid or forgetful or unpleasant. Everyone's poor round here. If I don't help them, who will?”

There should be a fanfic writing game called the showrunners challenge where someone writes a story and partway through someone else can play things like "actor leaves after 4000 more words" or "topic now too politically sensitive due to unforeseen world events" or "lost rights to that reference"

"There's no such thing as a fish because you can't define it phylogenetically without also including things that aren't fish"
Man I have bad news for you about lizards. And reptiles in general. And wasps, but I guess that depends on your opinion on wasps. And I don't think you're ready for trees.

I see your "Laios is trans" but that dude is THE most apathetically agender person on the planet. Laios does not have time for gender. Laios does not even HAVE a gender identity, he removed it to make room for more Monster Facts.

So we all know that Tumblr is US-centric. But to what degree? (and can we skew the results of this poll by posting it at a time where they should be asleep?)
Reblog to increase sample size!

anytime someone from the UK orders a print from me I’m delighted because the addresses tend to be charming and sound completely made-up, I just suspend my disbelief and accept that I’m sending a package someplace with a name like Bristleberry House at Ditchmallow in Brambleford-on-Cotton—incredible lmaooo I bet this gets delivered to you by a badger in a little coat

OK I've taken pictures before ironing bc who knows when I'll get round to ironing. Some months ago I fell down a weekend research hole with some antique needlework books and read a Bunch about jacobean embroidery.
And then I drew a rocket. All the stitches are found in actual 16th century embroideries. The flame and tree of life are my own interpretation of designs that were a common motif.
I tried so many different things in this piece, and I can't decide what my favourite part is.

let's popularize the term crossdresser again. a lot of people denounce the term because they feel it is belittling to their trans identity, and that is totally fine. trans people are not inherently crossdressers. not everyone who dresses a certain way that's "contradictory" to their gender is crossdressing. not everyone needs to embrace the term, but for many, it is exactly what suits them.
whether you are a trans man who dresses fem while fully identifying as a man, a trans woman who dresses masc while fully identify as a woman, a cis woman who dresses in mens clothing, a cis man who dresses in women's clothing, a nonbinary person who dresses in a presentation that feels "opposite" of the gender, a genderfluid person whose gender and presentation change to be "opposites", an intersex person who dresses "opposite" to their identity, or literally anyone else, whoever you are, if you feel your presentation is crossdressing, this is your nudge to use the term if you feel it suits you.
when i am feeling more like a man, i dress very effeminately. whenever i am feeling more like a woman, i dress very butch. crossdressing is a wonderful way to express one's presentation and gender, and to play with the societal expectations ascribed to our genders. it's a good term. i love you, fellow crossdressers

It occurs to me, looking through a bunch of DNI lists and carrds (although it has surely been observed before by others), is that what the people who make these want is not unreasonable per se. Rather, what they are asking for is unreasonable, because what they want is to not be using social media. They want to be using forums, or group chats, or instant messenger, or blogs; they want online communication spaces that are moderated, that are topic-specific, that are limited to existing/vetted members. And these this desire is not unreasonable, but it does not match modern social media.
And because so many of the people who make these seem so very young, I wonder how many of them even realize that spaces that do what they want can (and used to, and still somewhat do) exist, realize that social media can't do what they want it to, but that social media is not the only way for the internet to be.

If the smart guys who think “people these days” are too horny for vampires picked up one (1) authentic Victorian penny dreadful I think it would make their brains bubble out their ears.
