The person Ferdinand has the most trouble with in his family, aside from his father, is from his aunt (paternal side). Her presence isn’t a constant in the Aegir household. She lives elsewhere just outside the territory, but she always makes a habit to show up at least once a week. Normally it’s to drag his mother to tea with his aunt’s friends or to take part in some kind of sophisticated social gathering amongst them. It’s not uncommon for Ferdinand to be a part of those little get togethers to either spend more time with his mother or to support her.
Out of everyone his aunt is his greatest critic. She takes note of Ferdinand’s behaviors and activities only to make it a point of telling him how he’s acting inappropriately for someone of his standing. It’s also a repeating occurrence that she even says as much to his mother and father. His mother, ever the kind soul, only tells Ferdinand to act accordingly to save face. His father, hungry with greed, backs up his aunt readily should it be brought to his attention.
It makes the situation worse when his aunt gets her friends involved. All of them are so uptight about their manners and quick to cast judgement due to their social status. It always serves to make Ferdinand somewhat uncomfortable, but he’s nothing if not someone aimed to please others. So he takes their words to heart and in turn strives to be the perfect noble to live up to the Aegir name.
Besides, he wouldn’t want to disgrace his mother and father.

What would Ferdinand describe as his biggest weaknesses? How accurate is his self-assessment?
Ferdinand would probably tell you he doesn’t have a weakness. He kind of does tell you that when you take him to tea and he tells you to look as much as you’d like and you still won’t find anything. But at the end of the day, if Ferdinand had to pick something? He’d probably say that it’s being good at many things but not having an actual natural talent for any of it. This is, of course, if we’re just solely speaking about weaknesses for him personally and not ones that would render him helpless or guilty pleasures.
And I think he’s accurate, to a degree. I think him being good at a lot of things is both a blessing as much as it is a curse. But I think his biggest weakness is that he is pretty insecure behind this mask of noble perfection. He feels that he has to be good at everything and that he has to be this picture of perfection because of his noble standing. So he’d put on this idea that he’s just naturally gifted and hardworking, which he is, but deep down he worries that it’s still not good enough. That people still see right through that and don’t see him as someone born of nobility. So if you start to pick on that he’d get a bit defensive over it making that his biggest weakness of not truly and fully believing in his own abilities.

have you talked about ferdie’s mom yet? what do you think she’s like? :0 i looooove this blog btw 🧡🧡🧡
I’ve always thought that if Ferdinand got his ideals (and good looks) from it’s definitely his mother.
Despite being unwell she’s very kind and caring. She’s the type that would teach Ferdinand to try his hardest even when things get difficult. A very independent woman. Though I imagine that she is also really prim and proper (on her better days, especially). So along with his father, she stresses that Ferdinand behave properly. If he doesn’t she’ll chastise him, but she can still be pretty lax compared to the elegant woman she surrounds herself with. She loves tending to the horses with Ferdinand and doesn’t mind getting a bit dirty as long as no one sees.
She’s also very soft-hearted, especially due to her health and her love for her son. She’s a protective mama, but she also unknowingly gets protected by Ferdinand in turn as he’s always concerned about her. As strong as she is she seems like she can be blown over by the slightest wind on her bad days, and Ferdinand would never give her reason to worry if he were able to avoid it.
Mama Aegir is also a big family woman. She loves her family whether it’s big or small. If she could make all of their lives happy and healthy with no worries within the world she would give it her all to achieve it. So you can guess how heartbroken and ill it makes her with the news of what happened with Ludwig.
But overall, she’s just a great woman and Ferdinand looks up to her just as much (if not more) than his father.

I love the friendship that Ferdinand has with Lorenz. They mesh so well together with their ideals, but also their support for one another. Especially because as the war really makes its appearance and Ferdinand is on the verge of losing everything (regardless of route chosen), nobility isn’t his top priority anymore. And I think he’d struggle greatly with that idea, but he finds there’s more concerning issues at hand than a title and a plot of land. The responsibilities it holds will still be kept close to his heart, but the actual “nobility” part is pushed aside. He’d fear that no one would understand his thoughts on the matter ––– except Lorenz. When he brings the topic up he’s scared to tell Lorenz. He’s the only person he could think of to fully confide in, but what if he disagrees with him? What if it ruins their friendship? They bonded so much on their passion for nobility and the duty they carried because of it. So he’s grateful that those thoughts are quickly put to bed, and that for once in his life he has a friend he can lose his stiff and proper composure around when war time comes and when it ends.

Ferdinand’s final class is Holy Knight. His magic is not as honed as his lance or axe skills, but he’s pretty adept with thunder magic. The rest of his magical skill set are as follows: • Thunder • Fire • Thoron • Heal • Nosferatu

Ferdinand is very protective of his younger siblings. Even if he doesn’t come to know them too well thanks to being several years older he still loves them dearly. He also wishes that they don’t have to suffer in the same manner he did, especially when it comes to their aunt, Karolina.
With Stefan and Sofia not having a crest, he hopes that neither of them have to bear the brunt of Karolina’s incessant hounding about being proper. He may not stand up for himself in this regard as being the heir he feels the need to be perfect and exceed in every avenue, but he will stand up for the twins. If he can help it he won’t let Karolina have any say to how they should act, behave, or what they should have as their interests.
He wants them to remain innocent and true to themselves in the way that he couldn’t. No matter what it takes to achieve that he’ll see it through for them.

I’m imagining modern Ferdie goes to Starbucks often to get their black tea. His favorites are mixing it with strawberry and passion fruit. But he’ll also indulge in some basic classics like plain earl grey. He also quite enjoys their Mint Majesty.

How spiritual is Ferdinand? Does he pray because it's what's expected or he is a devout believer at his core? Does the war shake his convictions at all one way or the other?
To an extent, Ferdinand is a believer of the goddess and the religion. He’s not as devout as most but he does believe that there is something. It is in part to being a noble and it being expected of him to be so willing to accept the goddess. At the same time though, he puts more stock in the people than the goddess herself.
His convictions don’t really shake when the war comes. But it also depends what side he’s on as well. It doesn’t really waver either way, but if he’s not with the Empire his view on the goddess changes slightly.

Just a reminder that should Ferdinand have coffee, for whatever reason, it’s with a bunch of cream and sugar. He’s also munching on the sweets to rid his mouth of any lingering hint of bitterness. It’s the only way he’ll accept a coffee party with Hubert.

What's Ferdinand's biggest fear ... and has he ever had nightmares about it?
Ferdinand isn’t one to be scared easily. But if there’s something he’s scared of it’s being helpless. That can be in any capacity, but especially if he’s put in a position where he can’t do something. Whether that be him being incapacitated or there’s just nothing he can offer to make it better in a dire situation is something that terrifies him. How can he be a jack of all trades and the Emperor’s left hand if he can’t handle whatever situation is thrown at him?
He likes to be useful and capable of aiding others in need in whatever situation that looks like. But he doesn’t ever want to be helpless and he does have nightmares about it. He has nightmares where he watches devastating events unfold and there’s nothing he can do. It’s like he’s being held back by some force or there’s someone shouting at him that nothing can be done and that he should just stop. It makes him wake up in a cold sweat, and this happens often during the war.

I think I remember you mentioning a very long time ago Ferdie having siblings. Mind talking about them? Or if I'm wrong about that and he's an only child, would he have liked to be a big brother?
I had mentioned the idea of siblings but I don’t think it was ever concrete with what I wanted. But knowing about Ferdie’s mother (even if it’s just slight) gives me a bit more of a better idea for what I want in terms of siblings.
He has two siblings! They’re twins, both crestless (they theorize because of his mother’s declining health it would’ve been too much to bear), and there’s one boy and one girl! Their names are Stefan and Sofia, and they are twelve years younger than Ferdinand.
Due to the war that came when his siblings were very young, alongside leaving for Garreg Mach, he didn’t get to do as much bonding with them as he would’ve liked. But he loves them both dearly! Whenever he’d get the chance, even if it meant only a few minutes, he would stop by to see them. He’d also bring them little presents too should he come across things they’d like or things he’d think they’d like.
He loves that he gets to be a big brother and he hopes that he makes them both proud!

The fact that Ferdinand proposes to make a school to teach commoners how to fit into former nobility roles so they have the necessary tools is such a great idea. Especially since he thought of it all of his own while thinking it was Edelgard’s idea from the start. But it shows just how much he’s always thinking about helping to better the life of commoners and to separate that divide between them and the nobility they seek to uproot.
It’s not an accident either that he just “guessed” this idea into existence. It’s something he’s already previously thought about or something he predicted Edelgard could call into action with her new system (always trying to be several steps ahead of her of course). This is also aligning with his own goals, though. He’s always wanted to bridge the gap between the nobility and commoners.
After the war this is something he would end up being passionate about. He’d want to see such a thing through and watch commoners rise from the education they’re given. He’d almost feel like a proud dad watching them blossom into roles of authority based on their own merits and dedication. In fact, he’d even try to make all of this a reality with his own hands and experience.

After leaving to attend Garreg Mach he would’ve been conflicted about leaving his mother. It’s his goals and her encouragement for him to go that drives him to attend the academy without a second thought. But that doesn’t stop him from writing to her whenever he can to check in on how she’s doing back at home and to tell her all about what’s been happening. Or rather, tell her about the things that won’t afflict her anymore than she already is. He speaks about class missions (within reason and leaves out the harder elements of battle but notes that he’s well), his friends (or those he considers friends even if they aren’t totally sold on him just yet), and events that the academy holds for the students. He tries, just like at all times, to remain optimistic in his letters to her. He opts not to tell her about his father and what he suspects him to be doing. Even as the war makes its appearance, Ferdinand deigns to keep his discoveries under wraps as he learns more about the situation himself. His mother’s health has only gotten worse with his father imprisoned/disposed of and with Ferdinand out fighting the war as a general. He worries about her greatly and writes about his day every night before bed so one day she might read them whether it be the next time he sees her, if the war is over, or if he dies fighting. The latter is something he hopes to avoid and wants to tell his mother that nothing will happen to him, but it’s not a promise he can make and so he will only continue to tell her that he’s well. Route dependent: If you chose not to recruit Ferdinand and he’s left to defend the bridge of Myrddin, he will visit his mother one last time before he goes. A feeling of dread building in his gut that he shoves away as he tries to enjoy time with his mother and relays reassurances to her of his safety. He leaves her with a long hug, his favorite tea cup on her nightside table, and a tearful ‘I love you, mother.’ If you chose to recruit Ferdinand (or pick CF) he will write a letter of goodbye to his mother before the final battle. An insurance that should he perish in battle that he at least gave his last wishes to her. Thankfully he lives on and he forgoes giving his mother that letter to instead write her one about the horizon lighting up to a beautiful morning glow of soft, bright colors once the battle ends and a tale of their victory.

Ferdinand takes part in making his own armor once the war starts. He’s already spent a lot of time learning how to clean them, repair them, oil them, care for them, etc. So he feels like the next step is learning how to actually craft his own. At first they’re not very sturdy causing them to be not very protective at all. He can’t use them, but they serve as good practice even if they aren’t what he hoped they’d be. But when he has free time and wants to forget about the enraging war all around them he finds himself with the smiths to hone his own skills at armor making, and weapon crafting by extension.
By the time their professor reawakens, Ferdinand has armor that he himself helped to create.
