headcanon : full shift .

a while ago on the archive , @westwingsolo sent in a headcanon question asking if emma can fully transform , and if so what she looks like . after literally like two months of deliberation , i've come to the conclusion that yes , she can . but not at first . it's kind of unclear what allows a werewolf to fully shift in the show as they just chalk derek's up to "evolution" , but the definition i found that i resonated with the most is basically just : the character has to earn it .

emma has made a fuck ton of mistakes , and she has a less than ideal view of the world and of herself . i think for years she needs to work on both , atoning for the harm she's caused and learning to heal herself as well . she spends most of her late teens and twenties working on controlling her wolf and figuring out how to forgive herself for her past , making more mistakes , and atoning for those as well - and at the same time , her entire focus shifts to doing good for others and for the world .

i think age twenty eight is the first time emma fully shifts .

she's surrounded by her pack when it happens , intending to shift normally when she realizes focusing too hard pushes her past her typical wolf form . she feels herself folding , lowering to the ground and peering up at the astounded faces of her pack members . emma has transformed entirely , into a snow white wolf . her eyes , nose and mouth are the only parts that contain any color but white , all black apart from her tongue and teeth .

when you google "what does the color white symbolize" , one of the results that comes up says "white is often associated with purity , perfection , honesty , cleanliness , and beginnings" . twenty eight is when she reaches that new beginning , and when she finally purges herself of the burden of her self hatred .
