Of my current muse roster, my two who are royalty would never use their status to get what they want.

for Dark Choco, he finds no reason to bring up a title that technically "isn't his" anymore (having been disowned and banished), especially after hes spent so long being mocked for it.

It's also fun thematically since as Young Prince he always introduced himself with the fact that he's prince of the Dark Cacao kingdom.

For Hol'li, she's just so old that by the time she feels like she can bring it up its already been so long that people don't really know what Pyrathi was. It doesn't help that it was full of pirates and its king kept it pretty isolated, so there isnt much use to bringing it up.

Since she married Joshua she can technically alternatively say she's the queen of Jehanna, but by the time people no longer instantly know on sight it probably either doesn't exist or Hol'li has dropped the title because she should be long dead by mortal standards.

Ironically, when Dark Choco was early on in his "Young Prince" era he had a bit of insecurity when it came to his height. Not only did he unintentionally pick it up from Crunchy Chip, but he also wanted to be more like his father, who towered and still towers over him.

These days, he doesn't particularly want to be any taller despite not quite reaching his dad's height.

...Sometimes, he even wishes he was a little shorter.

decided to redo my frost spirit Dark Choco design! based it more off his nomad/loner outfit because i feel like it works better for a wanderer in the middle of a blizzard to stand out, especially since he's the "eye of the storm" of sorts.

the leaf is also still there, this time as a reminder of the Spring that comes after Winter as well as generally being a nod to the warmth that's keeping him together

finally, his eyes are the most different and also my favorite part, wee since pale/pure white eyes get used as a visual shortcut both for being blind or having a lot of power, it works well i think! since he's now kinda "blind" to the cycle of life as well as filled with the power of Winter

not to mention eyes being the window to the soul, and how being becoming a frost spirit changes his core self in a way that's irreparable to the point of reflecting visually (and it just looks cool)

i like to think that Dark Choco was made with a mix of Dark Cacao's soulstone/dough/whatever and a little bit from one of the other Ancient Heroes. it's too little to affect his appearance, so he still looks exactly the same as canon, but there's at least some sort of difference between "timelines"

(Note: NONE of these timelines implies the hero is his mom or his other dad or that has that sort of relationship to them. im not super invested in Dark Cacao or any of the other Heroes so i can't and don't have any strong feelings on any ships. at the very least i like to joke that Pure Vanilla is his other dad)

if Hollyberry's soulstone was used, the red of his eyes has a slightly more pink tint to it and there's a bit of a berry in his flavor (maybe he keeps the red hair that's in his sprite sometimes and it's not just from the curse). He's probably a little sturdier, but its not a noticeable amount when his base flavor already makes him sturdy

with Pure Vanilla's soulstone, he inherits a little bit of light magic that generally remains dormant in his canon timeline (the only exceptions are in CR Bugbear and in his Paladin AU). if he does activate that light magic, the first spell he finds is something to do with makng orbs of light, but whether he learns more depends on the exact timeline

this one is kiiiinda my canon default? just because i like him and i think it's an interesting thing for Pure Vanilla to have at the back of his mind when he sees him, especially with what happened at the castle

with White Lily, he inherits dormant magic, but i think most of the difference comes from the way she internally regards him as Dark Enchantress. she still treats him the same, but i imagine the insults about his past also have that extra edge of "you're a living piece of my past as White Lily and as Dark Cacao's friend".

i also have a scene between them from when they were younger in my head that hurts more with the context of him having some White Lily in him so. bonus points to that one! second most canon in my head

...aaaand i don't think Dark Cacao would use a Soulstone from Golden Cheese! sorry, i don't want to make him a bird lmao

jokes aside i think Golden Cheese was more of an outlier among the Ancient Heroes, but thats just because we haven't seen literally anything of her in canon

Though Dark Choco has the knowledge to use a bow and arrow, his aim is too thrown off by his missing eye to shoot most targets, especially if they're moving. When looking at things, he has to tilt his head side to side to fully understand something's distance.

He also used to struggle to grasp objects during his first year or so with the CoD, much to the others' (mostly Pomegranate's) amusement.

A Slightly Altered Timeline

immediately, i'm gonna make it clear that the big thing that didn't happen was Dark Enchantress having Bloodcaller forged and planted for Dark Choco to find, so he never went out to find this "powerful sword" he hears about as Young Prince.

So... none of this shit!!! Wahey!!!

Instead, Dark Choco just... takes his Cream Wolf and runs away after the argument with his father that'd normally make him leave to find the sword. From there, there's a lot of potential splits depending on who he meets.

Some of them include:

Meets Licorice again after saving him from a lion. Since he's not specifically going to the land of darkness, he lets Licorice - who was trying to leave the kingdom on his own - come with him. A different version of their ship happens in this timeline, as Licorice doesn't spend years being his "rival" and they both have that "mask" of confidence

Drops Licorice back with the Licorice tribe and still meets up with Kumiho. Again, since he's not going anywhere in particular, he lets her stay with him. They leave the kingdom and their ship happens and continues in this timeline

Leaves the tribe by himself and doesn't meet up with Kumiho for whatever reason. He's approached by the Cookies of Darkness, who directly tempt him with the idea of becoming stronger than Dark Cacao so he can take him down and do a better job.

Twisting the previous point, Licorice can potentially take on Dark Choco's normal role by having a cursed scythe he was seeking out in order to revive someone.

Caramel Arrow decides to go with him after catching up to him and failing to convince him to go back

From there, if Young Prince isn't in the CoD i can see him meeting and joining the brave crew on their journey if they mention delivering the letter to Dark Cacao, since at that point he figures he might as well go back anyways.

Stats wise, he's still a Front/Charge unit as Young Prince, except instead of having Sword of Darkness as his skill he keeps his Cream Wolf and has something similar to Crunchy Chip's "Wolf Squadron" skill.

Surprisingly, Kumiho and Dark Choco have a bit of a history together, first meeting back when he was in his "young prince" era and on his way to retrieve Bloodcaller. They traveled together, with Kumiho being her usual self, and their relationship became more than friendly at points, but they were never officially together romantically.

A few weeks later, once they were nearing the Kingdom's boarders, he suddenly told her that he wanted them to go their separate ways, feeling that he should go through the rest of the trip with no one but his Cream Wolf companion. Hurt, she complied, disappearing into the snow.

The two of them never saw each other again after, making Kumiho oblivious to what happened once he finally obtained Bloodcaller.

They can potentially meet again once he's in his "nomad" era, in which she will be her usual self at first, willing to forgive him. Dark Choco is nothing like the man she remembers, however, and she gets a little bitter when he doesn't return her playfulness or even really look at her. They have a strained relationship from then on.

In honor of Sherbet apparently coming in as a new playable character in the future, I figured that this would be a good time to share a semi-relevant thought i’ve had for a while now.

Like Sherbet, Dark Choco is a Child of the Frost. Unlike Sherbet, however, their vastly different circumstances (high exposure to Dark Cacao’s Soul Jam, feeling he has a role to fulfill in life, etc) allows Dark Choco to live on mostly unaffected.

Mostly.

There’re still days where he feels an urge to disappear into the endless snow, especially when he was out on his journey to find the sword, and his body is actually rather cold under his armor and cape. That innate resistance to cold helped him survive banishment until Dark Enchantress’ forces found him.

His father, Dark Cacao, became aware of his son’s condition early on, Frost Queen herself approaching the ancient king with the grave news after Dark Choco had tried to wander out into the snow. Dark Choco learned of it about a year before he left; it didn’t deter him from his search.

These days, it’s unclear when his "warmth” will run out. It almost seems that the curse overpowered it for a time, extending his lifespan, but there’s no way of knowing for sure.

Whenever that day comes, he’s sure he’ll be ready to join the snow once more.

Since I don't think I'll get to show rather than tell (Either through child M!A or someone straight up sending asks for his childhood verse), I figured I might as well make a post about how Dark Choco was when he was younger- specifically as a child up to when he was a young adult.

He was one of those really quiet kids who you could easily forget was there if you weren't looking for him, rarely speaking or audibly crying, though that's not to say he never cried. This would mainly happen when Dark Choco was overstimulated, whether it be by attention from lots of people or lots of noise, forcing the Watchers to only watch him in shifts. Smiles were a little more common, but still rare.

He also had a tendency to pick someone to follow around or wander off by himself (there was one particularly infamous instance where Dark Choco had managed to slip out of the Citadel and into the snowfield, only to be found and brought back by Frost Queen herself (or taken away by Sugar Glass in Surrogate AU)).

As a teenager, he became a little more outspoken, picking up traits from both Caramel Arrow and Crunchy Chip as he was raised alongside them. He'd begun to learn how to use a sword at this point. This was also when he began feeling apprehension towards Dark Cacao, as he could actually meet and talk to the Cacaoians who came looking for his father's help.

Dark Choco would even sometimes try to slip out again so he could assist them himself, but he was too inexperienced and rarely succeeded without help. Watchers often had to come to his rescue.

Approaching young adulthood, Dark Choco began to piece together a personality based off the Watchers and Hollyberry in order to mask his real personality and become more "heroic". This was when he began actively arguing with his father about sending out the Watchers to help their people and generally began internalizing the need to be seen as "strong".

It wasn't long until he tracked down and left to retrieve Bloodcaller, and the rest is history.

During his fights with the main cast, he made sure to only use the flat side of Bloodcaller to attack them, not wanting the cursed sword to have any sort of taste or hunger for them in particular. Looking back, Dark Choco is aware that this is most likely why he lost each time.

Regardless, he did not and does not regret it. As long as it looked like he was trying to end their journey from the outside, that was good enough for his "role".

Misc Dark Choco headcanons/thoughts

-He has a tendency to fall asleep standing up from time to time- it happens a little less often once he's out of the CoD, as he rests much easier without the curse. If he's outside, birds or other critters may perch on him. something something d.isney princess joke

-While he's perfectly fine walking on snow and keeps his balance on ice well enough, there's something about moving on sand that makes him extremely clumsy; he'll slip, slide, and possibly even fall over if it's loose enough. Losing an eye makes this worse.

Dark Choco learns how to fight as a Werehound rather quickly, figuring it out just after learning how to walk on all fours. Talking takes a lot longer, ironically, as he doesn’t exactly need it to get out of The Tower of Sweet Chaos.

He fights a lot like Wolf Link, though this clip is also a good reference

After Dark Choco frees himself of the cursed sword, he has a very strange relationship with dark magic. On one hand, he distrusts it (and magic in general, albeit to a somewhat lesser extent), avoiding being involved with it where he can. Even when he had the sword, he’d rarely strike with the dark lightning it could summon.

On the other hand, he’s become slightly aware of its presence, picking up on things like curses as if intuition. This comes at the cost of vulnerability to its effects, however, which became especially obvious after Pomegranate’s memory spell. Dark Choco doesn’t appreciate this.

This is still somewhat the case if he becomes a werehound, but it’s more of an ability to sniff magic out than some weird sense. Dark Choco also smells a lot like magic himself since it took quite a powerful spell to rebake him.
