jupiter made two visits to beryl and thalia was born a roman child of the skies. in an attempt to hide her from the other gods, she wasn’t sent to camp jupiter immediately and stayed home with a decaying relationship between herself and her mother. this opinion changed when jason was born.
it took two years for juno tell beryl where to leave jason, and thalia was left to believe he was dead. she ran away and found another demigod, calling himself a son of hermes. believing he meant mercury, she travels with him, building safe houses and making plans to stay safe and together.
she would have followed him into hell if he had asked and she almost did. they get separated in a fight and are driven apart. thalia’s last glimpse at luke is his shocked face as she races past, shield out and ready to die for him. the fight continues but when the dust clears, he’s no where to be seen. she shouts his name and screams for him to come back, but there’s no reply. both are left to believe the other is dead.
she runs, not knowing where she is or how to get to the safe house, but when she stops, her eyes look up to see the wolf house glaring back at her. with a resolution to tear the place apart, thalia marches in, only to find lupa waiting for her. even with no training, there’s something wolfish about thalia’s anger, and her time at the wolf house is short.
with no references or credentials, she is placed in the fifth cohort. she’s overcome with tearful joy to see her brother among them, but the roman in her tells her to not show that weakness until she has a minute alone with him. he’s barely four when she finally wraps her arms around him again.
with her piercing wolf stare perfected and her head held high, she gains the respect of the cohort, who call her centurion, and then the legion, eventually presented with the title praetor. she presses for changes to the legion, but her time as praetor makes very little difference.
the war looms and she suspects something she cannot say. is it common knowledge that not all demigods make it to camp jupiter? probably. is it common knowledge thalia spent two years with one? no. but she can feel the storm brewing and she knows it’s him.
on the day of the battle, she’s scouting in new york to see if her hunch is correct ( against the wishes of the senate, but she couldn’t give a rat’s ass ) and watches the world fall asleep. fearing for her camp, she steals a motorbike and drives to the nearest airport that is still open. friends of the camp pay for the ticket and she slips into the middle of the plane, whitened hands gripping the armrests as they take off.
six hours later, she’s at the base of mount orthys, watching the mountain in horror as the senate tells her they have sent her brother and reyna to its peak. she doesn’t have time to yell, but just plunges into the battle. the throne crumbles while she’s still fighting towards it and her voice doesn’t rise in victory with the others.
as soon as the legion is at camp, counting the dead and dealing with casualties, she resigns as praetor. thalia’s heard the whispers, about how they admire jason for his work and she won’t stand in the way of it. her time as praetor has failed and because of it, she feels she cannot remain. but she has hope.
screw your legion, she spits under her breath as she slams her hands on their table. i hope he destroys it.
roo’s breakdown of the prophecy
yeah, this had to be here. let’s look, shall we? this is assuming that the romans had the same prophecy.
A Half-Blood of the eldest gods, so, this time, it references thalia. technically, she’s the kid of the prophecy.
Shall reach sixteen against all odds, she reaches sixteen, doesn’t she? she’s twenty-one when the final battle happens, but this gives percy a chance to become sixteen. it could be seen as a half-blood of greece and a half-blood of rome both surviving, or you could look at it as thalia being hidden in camp jupiter for so long, only breaking free and reaching maturity, or sixteen, when she goes scouting in new york.
And see the world in endless sleep. yes, both she and percy saw new york as it fell asleep. more ambiguity - i like the idea of them meeting and trying to figure out who the prophecy was about because honestly, it could be either of them.
The hero's soul, cursed blade shall reap, thalia’s name has always been whispered at this line and she doesn’t care. she is a scutum, a shield to protect her legion, and if a cursed blade will take her soul, she will welcome the underworld. after the war, they figure this line referred to all the heroes lost in battle, changing ‘ hero’s ’ to ‘ heroes’ ’ even though thalia points out it’s a bit of a stretch. prophecies are supposed to be mysterious, they say to brush her off.
A single choice shall end his days, this line is what made thalia get on that aeroplane once she saw the sleeping manhattan. she freaks out when she realises the prophecy is in motion and realises she’s not there - she’s not in the middle of battle, getting her soul reaped, and she’s terrified the senate will send jason instead. she won’t lose him again. more info after next line.
Olympus to preserve or raze. the gods have been unfair, but a roman thalia knows they do it for a reason. if she was the hero of the prophecy, she would preserve it with her final breath to protect the legion she’s come to think of as family. but if jason was the hero, she would want olympus to burn while she watched.
but when no hero dies, as in the second to last line, the romans are suspicious. there are rumours around the legion, saying thalia’s choice to leave the praetor position will be her and olympus’ undoing, while if she had stayed, she would have sacrificed herself to save it.
they believe the single choice was her decision to return to the wolf house as a child, leading to her preserving olympus. if she hadn’t gone to the house, she would have razed it.
