Never before did he feel so alone.
This was a traffic thing to endure, and he felt as if, all had left him to deal with it himself. That the queen and prince both, where only dead and the conversation had twisted and turned, to the line of succession. He had never before in all of his life, felt so insulted. The council might as well have stood up and struck him over the face several times over. His boy was dead and they were more concerned about what was โ€ฆ going to happen to all of them, with his brother being the only heir left that he had. It was moments like this, that he forgets. The moment he had the crown placed upon his head, everything had changed for him. people looked and spoke to him differently, the man with him, had been a friend โ€ฆ long before he held any true power, even as prince, he had called this man, a close and personal friend. Even when his father was still alive, he was so far down the line of succession, no one ever expected him to sit upon the throne.
The usage of his name, with lack of titles, did not go unnoticed, but a smile did dance upon his lips, that this was a rare conversation, between old friends.
No titles here he felt as he would sit down on the other side of him before the fire. He admired him, truly. The lord of the tides, all that wealth, all that power, the largest fleet the world ever knew and he was not tainted nor corrupted. A great many other men would have drowned with such power, it was good to see another man, such as himself that understood, power and how to use it, wisely.ย  โ€œI must admit, the thought has been on my mind, to retire from here, take a leave and try and heal my wound.โ€ That of the heart, would need time. There was nothing anyone could do here. things would run smoothly with Otto Hightower sitting on the throne for a handful of months surely. Otto knew, grief as well, a friend the same as Corlys, and a close one as well. โ€œOthers have made, such offers, but yours is the only one that I feel is genuine.โ€ The rest, only wished to have the claim, that the king himself at graced their halls and castle something to use he felt, to rise their house standing even higher, but he was foolish to think.
That the small council would ever let him leave now, he was needed here, especially now with his brother having been sent on his way. Heir for a day. such a slight and insult, had only made him feel, worse. A king with no heir in sight, no sons and a brother he could no longer trust.
Still it was warming to know, the lord before him was not going to slither away, that โ€ฆ he wished to be here, not because there was anything to gain, though for others, now would be the best time to strike the king when he was sorrow and attach their strings to him. he had to โ€ฆ place his trust in the right people, now that โ€ฆ he was truly a dragon on his own here. โ€œThen let us drink to the past, and to perhaps, better time for us both.โ€ As he took a sip of the wine, he remembered the sea, that castle, when he was a youth, with his cousin running along the shore, good times, better times than this.
โ€œThe issues, you are facing, you know, I will aid you, I would not wish anything, to befall you, my cousin nor your children as well.โ€

So many years bitter and hurt over the idea of his beloved wife having the crown stolen from her right under her nose had curdled a friendship into something vile and envious within his chest. And yet, the lord of Driftmark had never given any thought to the idea if Viserys, ever dutiful and patient Viserys, wanted to be king. He remembers his Targaryen brethren as a young man, more interested in books and the studies of Old Valyria than he had ever been in ruling an entire kingdom. Some men were born for greatness, other were molded. He had not yet divined in which category he could place the now most gracious king in, but he knows it within his heart of hearts that a bad man, he was not. He would not wish his fate upon even his most hated enemy, let alone a man who had once been a trusted friend.
๐•ฟ๐–” ๐–๐–Š๐–†๐–— ๐–‹๐–—๐–”๐–’ ๐–๐–Ž๐–’ ๐–™๐–๐–†๐–™ ๐–๐–Š ๐–™๐–๐–”๐–š๐–Œ๐–๐–™ ๐–๐–Ž๐–˜ ๐–œ๐–”๐–—๐–‰ ๐–™๐–” ๐–‡๐–Š ๐–Œ๐–Š๐–“๐–š๐–Ž๐–“๐–Š inspired a kindle of hope within his chest. Of course it was genuine, for Corlys did not freely offer his land to anyone, king or not. Driftmark was his second pride and joy, only coming close to his children who were first. Perhaps being surrounded by family and the comfort of the sea was what the king needed to get back on his feet, no matter how much time it would take to heal the wound within his heart. Queen Aemma was one of the most gracious and beautiful queens ever to grace the kingdom and she will go down in history as a beautiful tragedy, taken away from the realm far too soon. "I am glad to know my offer pleases you. There is no need to rush. Take as much time to think about it as you need."
To hear the promise of a better future and assitance with the Stepstones was a relief he did know know he held within him. Drinking the red wine slowly, he considers that perhaps it is not all bad to strip away decorum every once in a while and speak to others as equals-- as friends-- within the court. And who better to have as a trusted companion and ally than the king of the seven kingdoms himself? "Hear, hear," He replies, wiping the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand. "To the Targaryen family, may their reign be long as it has been glorious."

He had never been one of faith or servitude to the Gods, but something about this beautiful, massive force of nature calls to him in a way his voyages beyond the sea once did. If his travels around the world had taught Corlys anything, it was that godliness was wherever virtuous people searched for it.

Graciously he approaches, making his presence known but undisrupted. "Good evening, princess." He greets, offering a courteous bow. "I would like to offer my admiration for your word back at the council. The king was unwise in not seeking your word-- flying on dragonback would be a demonstrable show of power. You will make a fine ruler one day."

MAY BAELON BE WELCOMED AMONGST THE GODS ACCOMPANIED BY HER MOST GRACIOUS LADY, THE QUEEN
They were comforting words uttered from Corlys lips. No one else had come near him. True words had been spoken, but he never felt like most of the people who uttered them meant what they had said. The death of the queen and the prince, there words were not full of sorrow, but more fear than anything else. At what could happen now, if he were to become unwell or turn up dead on the morrow. The kingdoms would fall into chaos and it would be war, war like before so long ago with all kingdoms at one another throat and everything burning. All because, he had chased and chased and had wished for a sun more than anything else within the entire world and it had cost him, everything he had.
โ€œThose are very kind words Lord Corlys.โ€ And to him, they were ended now more than ever. โ€œThank you.โ€
The king spoke the truth, about them both. A long history they shared, there families always close, long before his favored cousin had become his wife, when he was nothing more than a child, the memories of the vast halls and crashing tides of Lord Corlys home, still hold a place within his heart, of better days, happier days were each and every single thing made sense. โ€œI valve your council greatly, but your friendship, even more so.โ€ Especially now, with him โ€ฆ being so exposed.
He leaned on his wife for so much support, the saying within these kingdoms, behind every great man, was a great woman, could not be more true when it came to the queen and now, she has left him here, alone. Just he and his daughter, within a city full of snakes who wished to devour them both. He was tired, he was sick of this all, with Otto Hightower and the others, hardly even waiting for there ashes to scatter to sink there claws into him and try to force him to name an heir.
โ€œI did not mean, to keep you up till this hour Lord Corlys, itโ€™s just, there is a coldness within my chambers, that I fear returning to.โ€
Tumblr media
He does indeed feel remorse and sadness at the tragedy befalling the king. If anything on this earth ever were to harm a single hair on his most beloved wife or his precious children Corlys does not know how he would be able to bear such horrid realities. He cannot imagine what loneliness awaits the king back in his chambers, the hollow, empty walls that will most likely offer grief than the much necessary comfort, so in this Corlys obliges and accompanies the king in his hour of mourning. They were allies, and once upon a time, much long ago, friends. There was no harm in extending an amiable hand. "You're welcome, Viserys." He answers, utilizing his given name more so than his title. It is important to remind himself, especially in times like these, that he was merely a man before he was a king.
Viserys is a kind man, but Corlys' does not take for granted the power that he also wields. "And what a friendship it has been, your grace. Should you ever need to retire to Driftmark to breathe in the salty air, I would be most honored to have you as a guest. They say the sea knows sorrow like no other," He comments, refilling both of their wine goblets as they take seats in front of the fireplace. "I, myself, have often found solace sitting by the window that overlooks the oceanโ€”beautiful beast that she is."
Ambitious as he is, Corlys never takes his eyes off the prize of securing his family and legacy in the grand scheme of things, but he knows that Viserys is a different man from himself. Swinging the wine within it's glass Corlys stares at the fire before them and chuckles softly. "Fear not, for I have no desire to go back to my own chambers as well." The unspoken reason lingers on his tongue, the fact that his lady wife was currently not with him soured his chambers, made his bed cold as well. "Tonight I am not the lord of tides, but merely a friend to you, Viserys. Do not fret for keeping me lateโ€” I am honored by the gesture."

A KING COULD NOT SHED TEARS FOR THOSE THAT HAD BEEN LOST. And yet he would have wished for nothing more, than to cry here and now before both lord and close friend. He could count, upon one hand, the amount of people he trusted within the court and the man before him, had been dear friend, long before he had taken the hand of his beloved cousin and joined two incident houses to become allies with one another. โ€œI was only granted a mere moment, to hold my son โ€ฆ the prince.โ€ A painful admission. And the truth of his words as well, for he had known it had been a boy that rested within the queen and yet, to bring forth another dragon into the world, had been far too much for all of them. โ€œHe was strong, and fought bravely, but the world was not ready for his strength, another โ€ฆ time.โ€ As he glanced down. The queen and the prince, both of them lost forever to him, leaving him, in a hard pain of grief.
There were small steps, around the table as he approached the other. All others within the court, there words were hollow. There eyes betrayed them as well. There words, were like daggers in there heart, for they were looking ahead now, for who they could shift and push before him to take the hand off, which lord daughter, could be presented to him and earn a great step towards higher power. They were feasting upon the flesh and bones, of those who have only just passed. How he loathed, this game they played. โ€œThose are kind words to part with and welcomed at this hour.โ€ As he came to stand before Corlys and glanced down, before he raised his hand and placed it upon his shoulder. A small pat, a small thanks in his own way for valued friendship in this moment, were none other had truly come to him, to offer him a shred of kindness and comfort.
โ€œYou are a close alley, but Corlys โ€ฆ you are a closer friend than any other. Your kindness will not be forgotten, you have my thanks for remaining this long with me when all others have fled me.โ€
Tumblr media
The unkind winds and the violent currents of the ocean had a way of thickening the skin of men and women of all kinds who voyaged the sea and crossed to the many marvels of the world with himโ€” but Corlys had also seen people lost in their sadness when the tides lessened, when the sun shone in their favor. He remembers lovers torn apart by the vast, unforgiving ocean, fathers missing significant moments from their children's lives and mourning that loss, he remembers his own wounded heart at being separated from Rhaenys months after their wedding. The day he held his son in his hands was one of the proudest moments of his life, next to the day he held his beautiful daughter. To lose so many loves in ones life is a tragedy and Lord Corlys sympathizes with his gracious king. "A prayer for him then," He says, holding his cup and lifting it ever so slightly. "May Baelon be welcomed amongst the Gods, as he should be. Accompanied by her most gracious lady, the queen. May the Mother welcome them both into her arms."
The king has always been a withheld man, never shy but he was often reserved and kept his favor amongst his family and his loved one, and for Corlys to be counted upon those select few was something to be proud of in it of itself. "You honor me, your grace," He comments, steadying himself underneath the king's gaze. "It is only my truest of sentiments. What has happened to you is a tragedy and none should treat it as any less than that."
Corlys had already had several ideas in mind to help the king find a new wife, to tackle the situation of the Stepstones, to perhaps suggest to the king that Otto Hightower was a man not to be trusted, but he pushes it all aside in that moment. Dynasty can wait, he thinks, putting his own comforting hand upon the king's shoulder. We are family after all.
