46﹕ sender  pulls  receiver  out  of  harm’s  way .

movement almost steals a sharp little noise,   the surprise of suddenly being moved,  tugged around corner too quickly to entirely process it.    ( it's not like it takes much effort to move her,  slender form unimposing.  )   it's only when back is to wall  &&   she's given a chance to recognise who has pulled her aside that heart slows and eyebrows rise.   hand as such is gentle,  tugging @dwarfstaralloy's hand from lips in promise that words will come out as no more than a whisper. ❝ guess you changed your mind about if my sources were worth trusting. ❞

it's not fair to tease:  not when she knows he has no reason to be here other than having her back.  

whispers have a way of finding their way to her  -  the people she helps eager to tell her when they hear something concerning,  trusting her to have faith in them enough to follow up however she can.  getting others to listen to her has never been so easy though:  whispers and her word hardly enough.  she wouldn't have blamed ray for taking same stance.   so instead soft words leave her again,  focussing on silence now in hall,  ❝ are they gone? ❞

birdie rambles;     never forget that maeve’s marvel   &&   dc verse is actually straight up hell for her and I think it’s one of the most fascinating things bc!! it’d be so easy to assume she’s a villain or a monster and here she is with power over life and death just casually letting everyone who ever loved her assume she’s still dead whilst running a little shelter for inhumans / mutants.

her smile is subtle,  yet warm all the same,  amusement shining brightly as brown gaze regards him.  ❝ the lighting is bad,  raymond, but not that bad. ❞   she makes no effort to resist natural temptation to tease him  -   just a little   -  on matter.  he suits setting more than she does:  a party a mob boss whose son she'd helped is throwing,  someone he said he needed to get a closer look at.  a fake date.  it's all it's meant to be,  an easy,   simple fake date.

yet dark dress frames her closely as she takes another step,  gentle hands absentmindedly straightening his tie so she can be close enough to whisper for only his ears.  ❝ relax,  @dwarfstaralloy.  I'm sure you'll survive one evening of people assuming I'm a secret girlfriend. I promise not to bite. ❞   still she's careful with her shifting of material,  giving little pat to his arm once it's been released.  ❝ come on,  you owe me a dance,  it'll give you a chance to have a look at the guest list. ❞

concern has reached non-win levels,   hands painted red from keeping pressure on wound  (   she doesn't know the woman,  has no idea what trigger robber's rage,  yet still masked assailants pace up and down in locked room  ).   gotham is always full of dramas  -  of dangers every time there's more than a single person in a room.  it's part of its nature,  for better and for worse.  scientist has always done best to keep herself  &&   her work out of wrong hands,  soft comforting whispers continuing for injured woman,  doing best to keep her calm before glancing up at billionaire.

birdie rambles; me vs the desire to make part of maeve's ability in her dc / marvel verse visions of upcoming disasters. bc she's so tied in with life && death it makes sense ( but also if like isaac in heroes she paints or draws what she sees ). she already has life-force absorption / redistribution and I just think it sounds like her idea of hell.

instinct comes to reply she's fine,    quick  &&   dismissive,  to not let worry linger over her.  she's breathless but there's no pain,  no hint that he wasn't in time.  (   in the end,  most things can be easily healed.  )    it's just a few bruises  -  heart still hammering away in chest no matter how composed brunette forces herself to be,   small smile as reassuring as she can make it even as fingers move to try and smooth brown curls back into place.

❀    ||       maeve && her dc / marvel ability and resurrection

in her heroes / dc / marvel verse whilst maeve’s ability is beautiful… it’s actually probably absolutely terrifying to witness. she ties into people’s very life energy && can manipulate it.

like the fates cutting strings of destiny there’s something overwhelming to even witnessing it. when she’s using her ability she can literally sense how long a person is ‘meant’ to live for. it's something she only ever uses intentionally to heal ( by stealing energy from around her, from within herself ) and pushing it into someone: often risking putting herself into little comas if not worse if she gives too much of herself away.

when she does use it as a last resort to try and stop someone, it’s not beautiful. her eyes go white, her usual vibrancy fades and she’s both life and death in one. it’s not an evil ability but it’s not good either, it’s pure neutrality, and it’s why maeve fears it so much because… it’s all on her to constantly control it and ensure it’s only used right.

it's part of why she's the perfect person to wield such power: the fact she's not at all intoxicated by it, she doesn't want to live potentially for a VERY long time. it's only unlocked by diane killing her && her old life is lost to her once she wakes to this impossible world she's now meant to navigate.

important note: for anyone who has noticed the fact maeve’s story about how she came back to life constantly changes slightly whenever she’s asked…  it’s because she’s lying and leaving details out.   I’m like 90% certain she probably woke in her own coffin so she shifts the truth just enough to not have to tell people everything.  her ability did ‘drain’ a mortician  ( and like a fuck ton of birds that were found dead in the cemetery )    but because jewish funerals happen so quickly after death,  the delay to her waking up…  probably wasn’t the greatest timing.

once she’s back,  she still works as a geneticist but trying to help metahumans / inhumans who can’t control their abilities so they won’t accidentally hurt themselves or others.   before her death her work was absolutely renown and anyone with an interest in any of her fields    (   though mainly genetics   )    of expertise would have heard of her name.    maeve has never been interested in being well known or remembered,  she just wants to do good.

she builds up a network of safehouses, works hard to be there when people seek out help, and just generally keeps as low a profile as she can.

a collection of tiny && pointless hcs.

❀    ||     general: maeve isn't great at remembering to eat. it's a very bad habit stemming back to her days in the foster system. she can go way, way too long before she remembers - her work, after all, is far more important than taking those kind of breaks. if you're someone who cares about her, bring her blueberries ( or anything with blueberries in ). they're her favourite fruit and she'll pick at them without needing prompting. whilst she's not the most picky, she does really like spicy food && anything you have to eat with chopsticks. she's not a big meat fan but likes seafood - when she's just cooking for herself, she tends to eat vegetarian all the same. she's not at all a fan of overly sweet unnatural foods and if it's some sort of impossible shade of pink or something it'll be something she just nibbles at to be polite.

❀    ||     dc / marvel: part of her ability is that maeve sees and senses life energies. it's a constant thing, and it means that quite often she knows people's secret identities before they tell her if she meets them both in and out of costume. however she will never bring up that knowledge first and would never tell anyone no matter how much she does or doesn't like a specific hero.

❀    ||     dc / marvel: she tends to much prefer people when they're themselves than their hero counterparts. she admires heroes, don't get me wrong, but in the same way you would a firefighter. they do a lot of good and she respects them a lot... but she always cares more for the human / alien / being behind the mask more than the 'mantle' so to speak.

❀    ||     general: maeve masks her feelings and upset really, really well. disturbingly well actually. however this doesn't apply to empaths or even anyone who can hear her heart: it's a surface level mask, and she's very good at staying calm and collected and useful in situations... but if there's nothing for her to focus on? she's always going to be in much more discomfort than she'll admit.

❀    ||     general: big dogs make her a little nervous. it's mostly because of how loud they can be, she's not a fan of sudden noises or jumping. she wishes them no harm - she just prefers cats.

❀    ||     dc / marvel: whilst in all verses maeve is never much of a liar... her only lie / evasion even when with people she trusts is about how soon she first came back after she was first killed by diane. she's intensely private and just hates the idea of people knowing the traumas that still keep her up at night.

❀    ||     general: she drinks green tea 90% of the time. if she's drinking black coffee it means she hasn't slept in days ( despite how put together she always looks ) so please worry if that's the case.

god,  she wants to.  she truly,  so very desperately,  wants nothing more than to let lips part and everything recent months have held to slip out like a red sea.    (   he loves her.  he has always been open on that  -   he loves her as much as she loves him,  so if she were to tell him,  to truly ask him to stay...   at very least he would falter,  would he not?  )   concern makes easy home in the warmth of his tone and for a moment scientist cannot help the true fear that he will look at her and see right through the defences she has spent a lifetime perfecting,  the same defences she has always promised not to use when it comes to him.

- if she were to ask,  maybe @atomiism would stay,  but how can she compare her worth to that of saving universes?   could any love compare to the call of adventure?

❝ I- ❞  his phone buzzes again,  tucked away in one of his suit pockets,   a sharp reminder that this is no more than simple selfishness.  even if feelings for her might compare to his need to be out there again,  one stalker hardly holds the weight needed to be the one to ask The Atom to not go help against far worse monsters.  ( she can fix this.  she has to fix this herself.  )  yet the urge remains  -  to talk to him as though he is simply her husband,   as though there aren't worlds and cultures relying on him,  as though vows outweigh anything at all.

I'm sure by the time you're back,  everything will be resolved and I'll have long since disposed of something so very superfluous as this letter.  Still, experience seems to lecture against being too positive when it comes to how disasters find their way to us.

I'm sorry I didn't tell you everything that was going on. Please, trust me that it was never about not trusting you or wanting you involved. I've never wanted to tell you something more than I've wanted to these past months - I think I've lost count of the number of times I came so close to saying it, to just blurting it out ( and, as you know, I can count pretty well ). But you already have the weight of the universe on your shoulders and I've never wanted to be a burden on top of that: this is my mess, and as much as I know you wouldn't want me to carry it alone. I can't compare to universes that need saving nor would I ever ask to. 

Still. If you've found this letter, it means things stayed bad enough that I needed to remove myself for much longer than planned, and that means I'll be trying to be much harder to find.

 wishlist;   I think my favourite thing with all verses    -    but especially marvel/dc   -   is the potential of people who knew maeve pre bobby meeting her again?    bc post coma   (   or,  in marvel/dc,  literal death   )    she was just this sweet and shy little scientist who never hurt anyone and was just...    trying to help people.  and here she is,  years later,  still so kind but so very sad?  trying to work out how to balance wanting to trust the world and 

also,  you know,  the very valid reaction of ‘you didn’t think to tell me you’re alive???’ because during their engagement bobby cut maeve off from people and honestly,   she forgets they might want to hear from her once she wakes post coma or comes back to life.

hell people who knew her in foster care.  people who knew her when she was a shy 14 year old at university.  just seeing how the world really never gave her a break but how she keeps on trying to be what’s needed even if it keeps destroying her.

smile,  whilst small,  comes with easy warmth that only seems to harshly clash with the lines beneath large brown eyes.
