Craneβs specialty, other than psychopharmacology, is the treatment of anxiety disorders and phobias. Though he rarely raises the topic himself, heβs happy to elaborate on the most obscure phobias and provide relevant factors, experiences, or a line of reasoning that may contribute to the development of an irrational fear. He doesnβt have much patience for long conversation, however enjoys approaching conceptual ideas ( his favorite being the ego, or β persona β as well as any interpretation of β the shadow β ), and doesnβt mind an amicable debate.
Heβs also interested in Physiology, usually finding a way to connect the subject to neurological or chemical responses. While fascinated with the bodyβs sensory processes and neurological impulses towards sensation, much of his interest lies with the Amygdala and its association with physical, emotional, and psychological responses to threatening stimuli.
And of course, he will always take advantage of an opportunity to share his many theories regarding fear, perception, duality, violence, insanity, and the subconscious.

While he has the money to replace clothing that has been torn or ruined during fights or escaping a crime, Crane prefers to keep items of his wardrobe that have been destroyed. Instead of throwing away old suits and shoes he repairs them, following a similar pattern to that of his mask featuring obvious stitching. This apparel sits in his wardrobe, forgotten, until he adds another piece to the ensemble. Itβs exceptionally rare, but Scarecrow has been known to make an appearance wearing an outfit composed of an entirely stitched suit, matching pants, a distressed sweater, and stained button up.

Crane does not like keeping members and kingpins of organized crime as company. In fact, he has a deep resentment towards the likes of Falcone and other powerful figures in the criminal underworld. Their tendency to use status, physical power, and violence to intimidate and coerce others under their will reminds him of bullies and abusers of his past. He takes a special pleasure hearing rumors or witnessing their organizations encounter misfortune β even if heβs currently involved in their schemes.
ππππππππ ππ ππππ πππππ.
Doctor Pamela Isleyβs work is impressive. Sheβs incredibly intelligent, and Crane views her as one of few individuals competent enough to be trusted with his research. However, heβs wary of her alignment towards nature, her aloofness, and without much justification, perceives her as vain and sensitive β though these later two opinions stem from the fact that he finds her attractive and is fixating on a flaw to dissuade his interest.
Heβs not at all intimidated by her powers, as he trust they wonβt be turned against him unless provoked. He has a passive interest in her own research, though apathetic towards her efforts put towards the longevity of nature and the extermination of humanity. Most of his views towards Poison Ivy are met with ambivalence. He doesnβt feel particularly dismissive of her objective, but heβs also not interested in her moral standing. Instead he maintains a safe distance, and observes her actions through media or by word of mouth.

As one of the greater subtextual themes floating around on this blog, mutuals who write muse that have observed Crane in his personal life may have picked up on his relationship between sleep and medication. This is actually part of a cycle that began long before the writing on this blog takes place ; in his early life growing up in Georgia.
Crane originally began avoiding sleep, fearing the intense nightmares that paralleled his experiences with his father, being bullied, and his motherβs episodes of delirium. Well aware of the vast long and short - term effects a lack of sleep has on cognitive function, Crane began taking medication to treat insomnia and regulate his sleep schedule during college. He noticed that when sleeping under the influence of orexin antagonistβs he didnβt experience ( or remember ) dreams as frightening or vivid as before, and began to rely on medicated sleep to attain proper rest.
When studying some of Jungβs work, Crane read βThe Red Bookβ and grew curious of the concept of exploring the subconscious. This began a short period where he would experiment with different sleeping medication, anti - psychotics, and some recreational drugs to try and manipulate sleep and view different facets of the subconscious contributing to the idea of developing a psychotropic compound that puts one in touch with the darker regions of the subconscious.

*this is the cannon for my blog and may or may not apply to mutuals who write these characters.*
While Edward Nashton was his patient, Doctor Crane targeted the insecurities he observed watching Riddlerβs livestreams and through chatting with him online anonymously, to strip him of his ego and frighten him with both religious and existential concepts. The Doctor hesitated to expose Nashton to his Toxin in captivity, instead sending Riddler a puzzle box after his escape. When solved, the box released a moderate dose of his Feartoxin. He still antagonizes Riddler online under the pseudonym β F0RMID0PH0BE. β
Nashton was one of the first, though far from the last of Gothamβs high - profile criminals Crane would provoke : He subject Arthur Fleck to his experimentation in fear and turned a blind eye while the patient was tortured in isolation. While Harleen Quinsel maintained routine visitation in an attempt to reach Joker ( a Joker different from Arthur Fleck ), Crane terrorized her former partner Bernice Watson, who was committed after being exposed to a β knock - off β of his drug at Gotham University. After Harleen discovered this, Crane attacked her. Garfield Lynns ( or β Firefly β ) was apathetically gassed by Scarecrow after Crane refused to pay for a series of Chemical Warfare Emission Devices.
Though Carmine Falcone was assassinated before Crane could fully hatch a plan to β get even β with the crime - boss, The Good Doctor did everything in his power to complicate Falconeβs business ( scaring off his connections, leaking information to the District Attorneyβs office, refusing Falcone access to thugs locked in arkham, etc β¦ ). Oswald Cobblepot was well aware of Craneβs insubordination, however never stood in the way of the scheming Psychiatrist because of self interest β as well as finding Craneβs defiance funny. He and Penguin maintain a mutual distance, though Crane is disgusted by Cobblepotβs business, character, and appearance.
Scarecrow has also crossed paths with Amanda Waller and planned to gass her, and her agents, anxious that she would try and manipulate or blackmail him.
ππππππππππ.
John Constantine managed to hypnotize Crane only moments before Scarecrow could make an appearance and gas the occult detective. The psychiatrist spent roughly fifteen minutes in a relaxed - anxiety free state before awaking to find that the detainee had escaped.

Crane, ironically, has a very thick skull. As of this moment his head has been bashed / cracked open to the point of needing stitches, six times ( seven including an injury that healed on its own ).
ππππππππππππ πππππππ ππππππ.
He owns contacts, but doesnβt wear them. His vision is passable without wearing glasses and he could never quite get used to the feeling of something resting on his cornea. Crane also feels that people are more likely to take him seriously when wearing glasses.
ππππππππ.
There is nothing more trivial than stopping at a grocery store to pick up one to two household necessities. Crane hates shopping. He sees it as a complete waste of time. His refrigerator and cupboards are close to uninhabited. Because he is frugal, he rarely needs to stock up on hygiene products like dental floss or toothpaste. This dislike of visiting the store also extends to his wardrobe. Going to department stores to try on and buy new clothing makes him feel very uncomfortable. When he absolutely must purchase a new suit, shirt, or sweater, Crane orders from a brand name heβs familiar with and has the piece tailored.

One of Craneβs favorite ways to taunt another is by repeating a phrase or lie they repeatedly tell themselves, in a derisively flat tone. He does this to make it clear that he sees through anotherβs denial, and knows the lies and traits that drift in their subconscious, intimately. This would be a βpower moveβ if he didnβt take so much pleasure observing anotherβs expression the moment their forced to reconcile with their reality or insecurities.

This is actually something Iβve been building on for a while. Iβll probably release a more extensive post exploring this idea. Crane actually does enjoy art. He isnβt impressed by skill or composition, but an artistβs ability to digest and communicate certain subject matter in their work. When he left home, he took several books with collections and reprints detailing different artistβs work. That being said, he avoids galleries and installations because he, usually, finds artists insufferable. He claims most of them have a β certain vanity more offensive than that of the wealthy or entitled. β While heβs a passive observer of the visual medium, heβs out of touch with contemporary movements and trends.
a few examples of artists and work he finds particularly compelling are: Laurie Liptonβs Series, The Sleeperβs Reason, The Illusion of Brainwashing, Weapons of Mass Delusions, Empty, and Lockdown. He owns reprints of Francis Baconβs various works, Peter OndreiΔaβs βMan With a Maskβ and Francisco De Goyaβs βBlack Paintings.β Ken Currie is currently one of his favorite artists.
Unsurprisingly, he gravitates towards visual representations of fear, violence, insanity, and the ego.
Bryan Lewis Saundersβ βUnder The Influenceβ series inspired him to administer patients small doses of his drug and ask them to express their experience through illustration. Over time heβd increase his patientβs exposure to his fear inducing compound and keep a visual record of their progression into insanity. He keeps all of his patientβs creations β whether theyβre small sketches or sculptures, though rarely looks at them.
