Gods know he wasn't supposed to get attached, but here he was, at this stupid ball as Basgiath to celebrate the end of the Rebellion. Except he and his wife weren't here to celebrate, no, they were using the invitation to check up on the boys they fostered. He'd spotted Liam with the Sorrengail girl, Ceana was off looking for Xaden. They'd left Sloane at home, with his nephew training together. It was taking all he had in him not to roll his eyes in irritation each time Melgren spoke.

He was waiting for her when she returned from her errand, already in flight gear. Fraisel was already primed for mounting. Ceana was going to rage and it was going to take all he could to keep his wife tempered and not going after high ranking officials. They were supposed to be preparing for graduation in around two week's time. "Ceana, love, it's the boys, we need to leave. Now. I'll explain on the way to Aretia." Hopefully by the time he did explain they'd be closer to Aretia than Basgiath and she wouldn't turn back to seek retribution.

"Truthfully? Proud but worried." It was of course no surprise their daughter wished to follow their path, but it was a dangerous one. The Rider's Quadrant was graduate or die trying. That was if they even made it over the parapet to initiation. Their daughter was strong, he had no doubt she would succeed anything she put her mind too, but it wouldn't be without worry for him and Ceana. That first year, you can't contact in or out of Basgiath. A year without contact with their daughter. It would be difficult for them both, and the Duke was already wondering what strings he could pull rank with to get more information during that year.

"Xaden." The Duke's tone was clipped, because he wasn't arguing with this fioster son. He was telling him. "Whether you like it or not, both Ceana and I are in this for the long haul. You may not be our blood, but you are our son. Make no mistake." and if he had too, he'd run a sword through the King before he let anything happen to either of the young men under his care. It didn't matter than Xaden was a bonded rider now, Lindell was still his legal parent in the eyes of the Kingdom, and the found family of his own heart. "And it's not just you, Liam too, and Xera and Sloane." the sisters might not stay with them due to the legal limit of marked children, but that didn't make the girls any less family.

Looking to his nephew, he couldn't help the proud smile on his features at the thought also. "We're both very proud of him." not just because of his signet, but that he bonded to a dragon, that he would be safe inside the Quadrant for the most part now with the dragon at his back. The Generals wouldn't harm him because they'd want that power to use for the war. It was one less worry on his plate, he just had one more to go through this with. He was just as proud of the young man in front of him, his nephew had done extraordinary well and had a rare signet of his own, he was deeply proud of all the young riders in his family.

The Duke looked to his sister with a small sigh. "Nightmares can happen no matter the age." his often centered around being unable to protect his daughter. He should have never let Keara join the Rider's Quadrant, though he was sure there was nothing he could have done to stop her, she was as stubborn as her mother in all the best ways. "We just learn to endure and know those nightmares can never hurt us more than real life can."

The King made a mistake placing the children with as foster children and not expecting the foster parents to bond with the kids, because they might not be blood, but Liam and Xaden were his boys now, and Sloane might reside at Smithe's, but she was as much theirs also. "Ceana and I will always be here for your boys, and Sloane."
