August 23, 2019 ㅡ Blind Date
Hold me close and hold me fast The magic spell you cast  This is la vie en rose
Louis Armstrong’s La Vie en Rose was a fitting song for the atmosphere that evening at Bicena, a restaurant located in one of the highest levels of the Lotte World Tower. That evening of August 23rd appeared to be a romantic night out for couples, or maybe it was just another ordinary night of the same old same old.
Eunjin couldn’t comprehend why out of all places in Seoul, the blind date was set up in one of the most luxurious places in the entire city. It was out of her comfort zone, as was the entire concept of going out with someone. One year was around the corner since the disappearance of her ex-boyfriend, Jaewon. Since that day, nights were endless with constant thoughts and nightmares coming at her of him. She couldn’t fathom why he’d hurt her for the umpteenth time, though she knew she had it coming from the moment she fell in love with him. To Eunjin, his love was worth the pain, even if their relationship didn’t last very long.
The male across from her is named Minjoon. According to a friend who set them together, he’s an architect on the rise. Maybe that was a reason why their date was in such a grand place. There was no denying he was a handsome chivalrous guy, although there were slight signs of excessive self-pride when he talked about his occupation and the amount of money he earned. That, for her, was a no-no, but she’ll let it slide for that night.
La La Land’s Epilogue plays after the previous song, immediately hitting Eunjin’s ears from the second it played. For her, the piece was easily recognizable from the very beginning. She points her fork towards the ceiling as her eyes sparkle to the music, giving Minjoon a small smile. “This is from La La Land. Have you seen the movie?” He dabs his napkin across his lips before nodding his head in response. “I have. It’s incredible how it’s still popular here when it’s been out for years. I guess we’re suckers for movies with original story plots and extraordinary soundtracks. One or the other, but occasionally both.” A sheepish laugh escapes her lips as her eyes curve into a crescent moon-like shape. Minjoon had a point, and Eunjin never voiced it out nor thought of it that way.
Their conversation was shortened when dessert was served, which was a mini chocolate cake for the two of them. Eunjin’s mouth begins to drool just by the sight of it. “Ah, one of my weaknesses. How did you know?” He must have ordered it beforehand, because she couldn’t recall him ordering it during their time together. “I did my research before our date. Chocolate is one of my many weaknesses, too, along with cute girls with dazzling eyes.” Her nose scrunches upon hearing his response, full cheeks turning slightly rosy as she shook her head. Did he know remarks like those were a way to her heart, too? He’s truly done his research.
It took a while for the two to finish their dessert through different conversation topics and a few more cheesy remarks. The date was going splendid, which was a complete 180 from what Eunjin expected. It was also a pleasant way to open up to a new possible romance. However, it was still too soon to say.
After Epilogue was completed, another familiar song begins to play. It rung several bells in her head, but she couldn’t make of it. Just where did she hear it before?
I’ve been alone with you inside my mind And in my dreams I’ve kissed your lips a thousand times  I sometimes see you pass outside my door  Hello, is it me you’re looking for?
That’s right. It’s Hello by Lionel Richie. She first heard the song during her time abroad in England in late 2018, after her ‘break up’ with Jaewon. She was sitting in a cafe in Central London with a classmate when the song started to play in the middle of their studying. Lionel’s vocals caught her entire attention, as did the lyrics. Before she knew it, tears streamed down her cheeks, becoming too choked up to answer her classmate’s concerning “Are you alright?” question. The song spoke of Jaewon, and every time she’d listen to it, he only appeared in her mind. Why, out of all times, did it have to play on the night he wasn’t thought of for once?
What a smooth transition from Epilogue to Hello. Yet it was also an inappropriate time to play such a song when things were going so well between Eunjin and Minjoon. Words come out of his lips, but Eunjin hears nothing. Instead, her mind revolves around her ex as the song continues on. The mood that was set for the evening disappears in a blink of an eye, as was the sparkle in her eyes. Teary eyes avoid contact with Minjoon, shifting from the beautiful skyline view to her hands placed on her lap. It only made it worse.
“Eunjin-ssi, are you okay?”
Looks like she spoke too soon.
