when the clock reaches 2 AM and jo still isn’t home, mj worries something terrible happened at work. but she just tells will his sister has to clean up after a big party, and keeps him thoroughly distracted as they make a dnd persona for franklin. eventually, jo texts to reassure it was just some idiot trying to steal the tip jar and the police are blowing it out of proportion. yet mj still can’t rest until she sees jo home safe, knowing all too well how dangerous their city is.

she ignores her phone being flooded with texts from her mom on why she’s still at jo’s instead of coming home to do the dishes and take out the trash. none of that’s as important as keeping will calm and waiting for jo. 

the second jo finally walks through the door, mj has to hold back from rushing to her, not wanting to let will now how worried she was. but after will goes to bed, she finally gives jo that big hug, just so relieved nothing too awful happened. it’s only after that she realizes how tired she is, the fatigue of the morning’s diner shift and then staying up late with will finally settling in now that the danger’s gone. before mj can tell jo good night, however, jo offers for mj to stay.

❝ oh, ❞ mj’s surprised at first, but it isn’t the first time jo’s invited her. it’s just that usually mj can’t, knowing her parents are angrily waiting at home. but by now they’re probably asleep, and . . . she is really tired. ❝ thanks, jo, ❞ mj gives a smile, reaching out to squeeze jo’s arm gently.

❝ but you should take the bed. please. after the night you just went through?❞ even exhausted, mj’s willing to put up an argument for this. ❝ i -- love the couch, ❞ she insists through a short laugh, knowing that doesn’t exactly sound believable but not wanting to steal jo’s bed nevertheless.

looking at jo again just standing there, home safe, however . . . mj has to say it one more time.
