Randall’s cheeks turned a brilliant scarlet at not only Emily’s hand in his and the kiss she pressed to his cheek, but this adoring proclamation of love, her words bringing fresh tears to his own eyes as he looked at her with a smile, rendered speechless for a moment, before closing his eyes, gently pressing his forehead to hers, and squeezing her hand.
“And I love Emily,” he himself declared, voice hitching a little as he said, “I love her for her-I...I don’t care about a mansion, or a carriage, or a staff, or a fortune, or anything like that, I just want her. I don’t want to marry any other woman in the world, and I...I would do anything and everything I could to be with her. I don’t care what comes my way, I will marry her, no matter what anyone says or does!”
Wilhelm sniffled at his son’s loving words to his fiancée, brushing away a couple of errant tears that welled up in his blue eyes, as he looked up at June, who too was brushing away her own tears. The whole scene took them back to their own engagement, their own discussion about whether or not June really wanted to marry him, and her stalwart reassurance that she did. They vowed to never let anything stand in the way of their love, and that they would always love each other-for better or worse, for richer or poorer, their love would endure.
And it was clear to the Pace parents that their son’s love for this upper class woman would endure as well, for theirs was a love made to last, a love that would stand the test of time. Perhaps it was silly and fantastical to think so, but June felt there was a certain fairy tale quality to her son’s love for this woman, a certain story book element: A simple tailor, who falls in love with a princess, who happily runs away with him, willingly leaving behind all the trappings of her old life behind-all for the sake of true love.
