Despite how close of a relationship we have with our dad with music, my starting to play drums did not have anything to do with the fact that he played drums. We had a studio in our house, and I remember, when I was around ten or eleven, I wandered down there, and was just playing when my grandfather [Torben] came down. He said, “What are you doing?” And I was like, “I don’t even know.” I was just trying to figure it out, just kind of sitting there, he sat there, listened to me and was like, “If you really wanted to do this you could totally do it, and you should do it if you want to.” It was a big turning point for me. I mean, I think I’d sat on the drum kit maybe five times before that, but it never really meant anything to me. And that was kinda like, “Okay, well, I guess I’ll give it a shot and see what happens.” So, I got drum lessons, not from my dad because he didn’t want to teach me. Which I think we’re both grateful for in the end.
