Nice FM tropo opening in the morning on Tuesday, July 11 and more the next day in the late afternoon. Logged about thirty uncommonly heard stations, and a few I could definitely ID. Mild to good tropo has continued all week with our latest heat wave, sometimes bothering the local stations and opening up uncommonly heard stations on the channels in between the locals.

WSCL 89.5 Salisbury MD, July 11 at 1345, Classical music, good signal.

Unid 89.5, July 13 at 2359. "Public radio for eastern Virginia" and into classical music.

WCPR 89.7 Raleigh NC, July 11 1345-1430, classical music, big strong and steady signal. ID at 1410, “The Classical Cafe” on “The Classical Station.”

WCRH 90.5 Williamsport, MD, July 9 at 1812. Three stations fighting for the channel, with WCRH dominating as it plays an episode of "Adventures In Odyssey", a children's mystery drama with moralistic and christian overtones.

WKHS 90.5 Worton, MD, July 12 at 0010. Rock music, relay of WXPN 88.5 Philadelphia. First time heard here in several months, as the frequency's normally covered up by a couple of christian stations.

WDJC 92.7 Prince Frederick, MD, July 12. At 2322, big open carrier. Cut mid-song into mellow soul music at 2328. ID "Magic 102.3 and 92.7". Very good signal. 92.7 is one of the stations that Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder paid way too much for several years ago and sold at a huge loss earlier this yeer.

WXDC 92.9 Berkeley Springs, WV, July 4 at 2335. "Rock the Casbah" by The Clash, a car dealer commercial, and ID "Max 92-9".

WVHL 92.9 Farmville VA, July 11 at 1350, Country music, ID “92.9 Kickin’ country.”

WNOB 93.7 Chesapeake VA, July 11 at 1401, Music by Bananarama, “Cruel Summer,” ID “Bob FM.”

WQZK 94.1 Keyser, WV. July 4 at 1538. ID "94-1 QZK The tri-state's hit music channel".

W225AQ 94.3 Frederick, MD, July 14. Solid dead air/open carrier on 94.3 at 1835 in central Montogomery County. Driving north, the signal got somewhat better, but still open carrier at 1854. At 2225, music parallel to 820 AM. This is a new translator for WWFD 820 Frederick MD "The Gamut," our local free-form radio station. The only commercial content ever played on this station is Washington Nationals ball games, and at 2230, the pre-game show for tonight's ball game. The Gamut is also on W252DC 98.3 Reston VA and one of the HD channels of WTOP 103.5 Washington DC and WTLP 103.9 Frederick MD. I can hear W252DC in Rockville, some 25 miles to the south, but almost never in Mount Airy.

W234BY 94.7 Charlotte, NC, July 12 at 0026. ID, "94-7 Smoke" and into a song by the Charlie Daniels Band. Very good copy at 0124 with a live version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "MCA". A press release from Beasley Media Group announces the station's debut on June 19. radio-locator tells me that W234BY is 250 watts.

WFLO 95.7 Farmville VA, July 11 at 1350, Talk, lottery commercials, mentioning Farmville, Prospect, Richmond Jazz Festival promo, talk “Here at Flo.”

WGRQ 95.9 Fairview Beach VA, July 11 at 1410, music by Billy Joel, “You May Be Right,” ID “Super hits 95.9.”

WKLR 96.5 Richmond VA, July 11 at 1355, Music by Bon Jovi, ID “Classic rock 96.5″ into music by Pink Floyd.

WQER-LP 96.7 Rockville, MD, July 13 at 0016, Yipe! Watch those levels! Horribly overmodulated talk in Chinese. Despite being very close (20 miles or so) from Mount Airy, lately its signal's usually wiped out by WCEI 96.7 Easton, MD's 12.5 KW AC station.

W248BN 97.5 Alexandria, VA, July 13 at 0002, Mexican music and ID "La Mega".

WQPO 100.7 Harrisonburg, VA, July 10 at 1513. Lots of commercials for ambulance chasers, mortgage firms, lawyers, etc., ID at 1521, "The valley's hit music station...Q101".

WRXL 102.1 Richmond VA, July 11 at 1403, Annoying morning zoo show ending with crappy alt-rock comedy song, ID “XL102 Richmond’s alternative rock.”

WUSQ 102.5 Winchester, VA, July 4 at 1715. ID, "Shenandoah Country Q102 dot com".

W275BO 102.9 Reston, VA, July 14 at 1822. Indian pop music with a lively deejay speaking in Hindi and English. ID "Bolly 102.9." First time heard here. This is a repeater for one of the HD channels on WWWT 107.7 Manassas VA, whose analog signal is a simulcast of WTOP 103.5.

WURV 103.7 Richmond VA, July 11 at 1405, top 40 music, ID “103-7 Play,” RDS “Play.”

WFRB 105.3 Frostburg, MD, July 9 at 1832. Lots and lots of junk commercials for credit fixing and tax relief, finally an ID "The all new Big Froggy 105-3" and "WFRB Frostburg". July 14 at 1846. RDS decodes "BIG FROGGY 105.3", commercials mentioning Allegany County, Frostburg, and redneck country music. Fair to good signal.

WOJL 105.5 Louisa VA, July 11 at 1358, Music by Chuck berry, RDS “SAM FM.”

W288BS 105.5 Reston, VA, July 12 at 0006, anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian talk, RDS decodes as "Sputnik".

WRQE 106.1 Cumberland, MD, July 9 a 1844. Rock music by Boston and The Who, with ID "Rocky 106". July 12 at 2335. Commercial for Rocky Gap Casino Resort, lots more commercials and PSAs, then into "Sammy Hagar's Top Rock Countdown" with ID "Rocky 106".

Medium wave

WCBM 680 Baltimore, MD, July 11-14, 1000-1100. This poor station is reduced to playing endless commercials for erectile dysfunction, testosterone and penis enlargement pills during their morning "talk" show that features extreme right wing politics. I can't wait for Bruce Elliott, the morning host, to replace his inline promotions for "My Pillow dot com" with "Hey, if you're like me, then you probably have trouble getting it up occasionally..." I shudder to think what of the grumpy old right wingers who listen to this station think of the penis pill commercials.

WFKJ 890 Cashtown, PA, July 9 at 1656. Anti-education propaganda from "Issues In Education dot org", into top of the hour ID "WFKJ working for king Jesus".

WWRC 1260, Washington, DC, July 9 at 1647. Several commercials for some outfit called the "American Freedom Law Center" all of which were islamaphobic, muslimphobic, commiephobic, and full of right wing conspiracy theories and other extreme right wingnuttery.

Shortwave

5130 at 0100 on July 13. WBCQ. A Spanish language talk show at 0036. Repeat of "Allan Weiner Worldwide" at 0100. s9, very good.

7200 at 0058 on July 13. Various talk happening here, and someone saying "Hola mother fucker" occasionally is the strongest signal on the channel.

7490 at 0100 on July 13. WBCQ. The Howl Turner show starting. Fair to good signal, s7.

9330 at 0100 on July 13. WBCQ sign off theme and message, excellent signal, s20+. "This is WBCQ Monticello Maine US" with the "A" cut off to open carrier at 0000, transmitter off a few seconds later.

9395 at 2200 on July 4. Yipe! Peter Frampton's infamous song "I'm In You" on WRMI's oldies program.

9475 at 1604 on July 4. Big open carrier substituting for the usual racist preaching on WTWW.
