Grandmother Sues Baton Rouge Police Department Over Alleged "Sexual Humiliation" A grandmother is taking legal action against the Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD), claiming she was subjected to "sexual humiliation" during a traffic stop that led to her being taken to a controversial facility known as the "Brave Cave." This lawsuit comes as the BRPD faces intense scrutiny following the closure of the facility. The controversy centers on the "Brave Cave," a facility that recently attracted FBI attention due to civil rights violations. Ternell Brown and Jeremy Lee had previously filed lawsuits against the department, resulting in four officers now facing criminal charges. Brown, aged 47, alleges that on June 10, she endured unnecessary strip searches and body cavity searches at the facility, which she describes as sexually humiliating. Jeremy Lee, who was initially charged with resisting arrest when taken to the "Brave Cave" on January 9, claimed he was severely beaten, to the extent that local jail authorities refused to admit him until he received treatment at a nearby hospital. Incident reports from the Baton Rouge Police Department were not available at the time of this report. Ongoing Concerns and Investigations Ryan Thompson, an attorney representing Ternell Brown, stated that reports of abuse at the facility continue to surface. He mentioned that another lawsuit is forthcoming. BRPD Public Information Officer L'Jean McKneely emphasized the department's commitment to addressing these troubling accusations. Chief Murphy Paul has engaged with FBI officials, requesting an independent review of the complaints. As a result, the Narcotics Processing Facility has been permanently closed, and the Street Crimes Unit has been disbanded and reassigned. Allegations of Misconduct The investigation revealed that four officers used a Taser, struck a nude man, and used excessive force during a strip search that was caught on body camera footage. Officers allegedly reviewed the footage after the incident and devised a plan to prevent the video from being reviewed. According to Thompson, in Jeremy Lee's case, an officer exposed Lee's underwear as he was transferred from one vehicle to another. The lawsuit alleges that the "Brave Cave" served as a "home base" for the department to interrogate suspects, gather intelligence, and attempt to persuade them to cooperate with BRPD. The "narcotics processing facility" had processed thousands of suspects over the past two decades. However, it was closed by the Baton Rouge mayor. Traffic Stop Leads to "Brave Cave" Visit Ternell Brown's ordeal began when she was pulled over for a window tint violation. During the traffic stop, officers found two different types of pills prescribed to her stored together in the same bottle, despite her insistence that the pills were legally prescribed. Nevertheless, she and her husband were forcibly taken to the "Brave Cave," where Brown underwent illegal strip and body cavity searches. Thompson noted that department policy requires a medical professional to conduct such searches. A supervisor should be called for clearance, and a warrant must be obtained from a judge or magistrate for body cavity searches. In Brown's and Lee's cases, no justification was found for these searches. Jeremy Lee's Experience Jeremy Lee was taken to the "Brave Cave" after a warrant was executed at a North Baton Rouge residence. Lee was initially held in a squad car for hours before being transferred to the facility. There, officers removed their body-worn cameras, and a criminal complaint alleges that Lee charged at officers. Thompson claims Lee was knocked down with a leg sweep and kicked by other officers. Subsequent footage shows a lengthy period of questioning after the alleged beating. No Comments from Legal Representatives Both the office of East Baton Rouge Parish Attorney Anderson Dotson, who represents the police department, and the Baton Rouge Union of Police declined to comment, citing pending litigation. The FBI's investigation into the department remains ongoing. Read the full article
