The Alhambra is situated in a locale of rare natural beauty. The plateau upon which it was built overlooks the Albaicín (Albayzin) quarter of Granada’s Moorish old city. At the base of the plateau, the Darro River flows through a deep ravine on the north. The park outside the palace (Alameda de la Alhambra) was planted by the Moors with roses, oranges, and myrtles. Its most characteristic feature, however, is the dense wood of English elms brought there in 1812 by the duke of Wellington during the Peninsular War.

The first cities we visited in Spain through our abroad program ISA were Cordoba and Granada. It was absolutely breathtaking to see the architecture in these beautiful, quaint Andalusian cities.
On day 1 of our travel weekend, we walked through the streets of the historic centre of Cordoba and took tours of the Mosque-Cathedral which is an incredible representation of the blending of cultures and religion that took place in the vast history here. There are around 300 mosques scattered throughout the city that are still in use today.

We then headed to Granada where visiting La Alhambra was an eye opening experience. This massive structure is on a plateau overlooking the city and took over 100 years to build in the 13th and 14th centuries. It was originally built by the last Muslim state of Al-Andalus and the immense details in the Moorish architecture are an incredible site. The gardens and fountains are well kept and simply beautiful.
