I'm going to lose my fucking mind
#For context: I was going to make a post complaining about how lesbians don't have enough good musical theater duets#(like we have the love songs from 'The Color Purple' which're alright but doesn't match the passion or desperation present in the book imo#'Changing My Major' which is a great love song but doesn't hit that sweet duet spot#'Dance With You' and the last verse of 'You Happened' from The Prom are sweet but the girls barely get to actually sing about each other#Honestly 'Oh Well' from Love In Hate Nation comes closest to what I want but it ends on a bittersweet note unless you see the show live#If only Elphaba and Glinda were canon...#But anyway. I can't believe that there's an adaptation of The Color Purple coming in the year of our lord 2023 and this is#how they're talking about Shug Avery. Her *role model*. Lock up your *husbands*. Ick. Pfaff.#I mean they're going to be gay. You can't get around that. But Shug is the love of her life. Can we please talk about that in the character#Don't mind me I'm just over here overreacting#From what I've read one of the biggest adaptational changes in the musical is her reaction to Shug's affair.#Like in the book Shug is the one light in her life. I sobbed myself to sleep over her nosedive in self-worth when they took a break#In the musical she's just...fine with it? I get why that's more satisfying emotionally but I still think it undermines their relationship#I don't get the curse thing either. I'm a little fuzzier on this part but in the book doesn't she just leave him and she's able to thrive?#Then when he asks her to get back together she's able to just know that the worst with Shug or alone is better than the best with him?#This book man. I hate that there isn't an adaptation as devoted to the Celie/Shug relationship as the book is.#Hate that the only recommendation I've seen calling it a sapphic book was from someone who thought that Celie's letters were to her lover#I remember watching this steamy adaptation of a Shakespeare play in soph Eng and seething because they only kiss once in the 1985 movie#Ig I can't expect too much from 1985 but...it was in the book! It was one of the most important parts! They don't even live together in it!#This was all to say I wast a lesbian 'Green Green Dress' a lesbian 'Home' a lesbian 'Natasha & Anatole' a lesbian Legally Blonde finale#The list goes on#I'm sure The Color Purple (2023) will be a good adaptation and movie. I will not pop blood vessels while watching it.#Maybe I should just avoid press releases and the movie will surprise me in a good way.

“You're ruining it!”
--
Berto was good at adapting. When he'd first moved to San Francisco with his big sister, he had adapted. When he had then moved to New York, he had an easy time fitting into college life and he had no problems making connections with the local pack.
The same went for him when they moved to San Francisco, together. After his very amazing husband (husband!! He loved the sound of that, he loved introducing Gabe as his husband to others) had gotten him a whole mansion for their wedding. A beautiful, gorgeous, pastel-purple Victorian house with an amazing view and only like half an hour away from Berto's sister's place.
He'd been there for all of Dani's big firsts, because he'd lived with his sister's family while he'd been in college. And he thought he'd be fine, starting his new life somewhere else. Until his sister got pregnant for the second time and he realized he'd miss so much of the baby's life. The thought made him feel absolutely miserable and made him miss his family more than ever before.
The best part about living in San Francisco again was being back in Dani's life and seeing his cute, adorable, precious little nephew. Seeing him take hi first little steps. The first time he called out 'Be-bo', because 'r' was a hard sound he was still struggling with, so for now Berto was uncle Bebo and it was awesome. Every little thing Benny did was absolutely awesome.
“I still can't believe how this little bundle of joy and love and awesomeness came from you.”
Julietta gave him the stink-eye and flipped him off. Muttering came from Julietta as she continued helping him. It was Gabe and Berto's first wedding anniversary and Berto wanted to surprise his husband (yep. Still awesome. Loved thinking that) with a huge cake. To get it done in time, he had reluctantly employed Julietta's help.
“No—o,” Berto made a miserable noise. “You're ruining it!”
Though he reached out for Benny, it was already too late. The toddler's hands were covered in purple whipped cream and the cake now had cute little hand-prints on it. With a sigh did Berto carry his nephew over to the sink to clean him up. They shouldn't have put the toddler on the table.
“Bebo angy?”
“No, zio Berto's not angry with you, little muffin,” Berto smiled strained. “You were... just trying to help. But maybe let the adults take care of the cake, okay?”
Kids were so adorable. He loved, loved, loved Dani and Benny both. Still had a hard time wrapping his head around how such adorable and awesome kids had come from his devil of a sister.
“Berto, I'm home. Are you here?”
Oh no no no no. The cake wasn't ready and it now had hand-prints on it and there was a whipped-cream covered toddler in their sink and Julietta was still here and Gabe was way too early and-
“Breathe, Berto,” Julietta's voice was soft as she patted his arm. “I'm taking Benny and going out the back door. Hand-prints aren't the end of the world. He'll love it anyway. Have fun.”
She placed a last kiss on his cheek before grabbing her toddler and indeed leaving. Just moments after she was out of the kitchen did Gabe enter the room, looking curious. His eyes softened as he looked at the tall purple cake. Purple was Gabe's favorite color, that was why their house was purple too, so Berto liked giving his husband purple things.
“Happy anniversary, babe,” Berto offered sheepishly. “It's not perfect, but-”
“It is,” Gabe interrupted him quickly, before approaching. “It's beautiful. You made a cake for me, how could it be anything but perfect, my love?”
The next moment, he had his husband's elegant hands on his face, pulling him down into a kiss. Mh. He loved Gabe-kisses. They were always so... so all-consuming? Smiling into the kiss, Berto wrapped his own arms around his husband's slim waist to pull him closer.
“I love you, Berto,” whispered Gabe. “Happy anniversary.”
