Used lightly, the Chandler and Neve saturation emulations are very useable. Sometimes, I just push it as far as I can into the red and it just sounds warm, gooey and bombastic. When it comes to spicing up electronic drum loops with living tape colour, I find it incredibly easy to use but at the same time remarkably flexible. U-He Satin: it's different than Kramer Tape (Waves) or UAD's tape stuff, and it's different than Slate VTM (requires iLock), but it's amazing. Here's what I use for colour, because colour is where it's at: My answer would, other than the odd Waves plugin that suits you, be: neither. Also, some of the filter modes on Volcano are quite coloured and respond to being pushed hard.īut do expand your options from UAD or Waves. I personally hate hardware dongles of any kind, so I don't use iLock stuff or UAD. The attitude espoused by many (check out gearslutz for fierce debates) is that UAD sells plugins with a glorified dongle.

A lot of people who don't understand DSP all that well say, "blah blah blah hardware accelleration, that's why you need the UAD card" but it's not like that UAD card is somehow more powerful than the DSP you can get out of a brand new Mac Pro or whatever. I don't own any, but Greg's hardware stuff is mindblowingly good and easy to use, so I assume his plugins are top notch as well. Mixing Progression Series #5: Clean-Up EQ
Most of what I've described for you guys in the past 4 blog post have been about basic setup procedures I do for every mix. Although basic, this is 30% of your mix. If you get this workflow to happen in 30 minutes then mixing will naturally happen. A mix isn't purely creative as some might want to believe. You make the song what it is because the song can be nothing but what it is. It sounds very anti-philosophical, but mixing implores a lot of common sense strategies cause we prefer certain qualities and traits over others. For example, why would we ever care to listen to 20 kHz on any instrument? This is why we roll-off the very low and high frequencies to help emphasize what we do want to listen to. They're technical implications that need to be addressed.
Now I can began this blog post with the best practices of using an equalizer, but that's no different from listening to a random person on youtube making choices only he will make with his tracks. That won't help you in the long run and specific case scenarios dedicated to your music. Take Dave Pensado's advice. He doesn't mind showing you tricks and tips in his mixing because they worked for that song. I repeat.

Now, does this mean its a bad idea to ignore these tips and tricks people give you? No because they might come in handy or save you if your mix has a similar issue. But if you think every kick drum or brass instrument will use the same boost/cut frequencies and values you are sadly mistaken. Even in the same room with the same microphone the wind changes. What I'm trying to say is be very acute on your decisions when EQ'ing. Don't make decisions because that's what 'everyone' says you should do or because 'generally' this is how things are done. There are many engineers that will 'generally' tell you different. Focus on your specific issue. If you hear a kick drum that sounds way to woofy, don't just boost the mid and high frequencies just cause somebody says that'll bring out the smack in your kick drums. Tailor your EQ process specifically in this stage.
Let me show y'all what I do in these scenarios. I'm an adamant user of Kuassa's EQ plugins. I own a set in both Reason and as AU/VST plugins. They're based off the Neve 1081, 1084 and Pultec MEQ-5, EQP-1A modules respectively.
I use these for two reasons. One, they use discrete values tailored for the specific frequencies. I don't need to judge what my Q-Value should be. I take away as much as I need to add the correct frequency to do the job. This also keeps me from making unnecessary decisions since I don't have a graphical display so the only thing that can help me is my ears. There's many plugins emulating these suite of EQ's. Waves has the Pultecs and the VEQ series. UAD has versions of these as well. There is a free version of the Pultec called PTEq-X made by Ignite Amps. It's solid and well worth it especially if you do mastering work.
This doesn't mean you have to use what I use, but have a go to EQ where you can dial in a frequency immediately to cut frequencies without having to scroll out the spectrum and find it. This is not surveillance. We need to get things cleaned up so we can make creative decisions. Let the technical be the technical. Let the interns have some work so you can make sure the track sounds the best it can be without over working yourself.
The next thing these EQ's will do is help your ear training. When I'm going through trying to hear what needs to be taken out, I'm listening for unnecessary room tone and unwanted frequency content in the highs & lows. If a vocal is too boomy, go ahead and cut it at 65 Hz or whatever. Females 80. This is how I work; there is no extra processing. Overtime I decide to boost the high frequencies with my EVE EQ's, I generally always low pass at 18 kHz. This is to keep harmonics generated by the boost in the 16 kHz from over saturating. The Pultec has a Bandwith knob (Q-Value). I typically do not change it unless I really need to. 85% of the time it stays right where it is. If I need to add 2 or 3 instances of EQ's, so be it. It's better in my ears to add the right amount of EQ's at the right frequencies in stages rather than attempting to force an EQ to make a sound perfect by processing it at extreme levels.
If your track doesn't have enough body or weight too it, it's probably sitting on the wrong fundamental frequency. What I've learned is sounds, especially vocal still need frequencies below 100 Hz. They need that foundation because the chest resonates there and those frequencies still propagate through the air when a person speaks. If we just remove those frequencies, we will thin out the vocal. If I'm missing that in my recording I would take the Pultec and crank up the low end Boost at either 20 or 30 Hz to a number where I can hear the bass build up. Then knock it back one dot. Then I'll carve out some of the unwanted frequencies with the Attenuation knob at the value half of what I boosted. The vocals should then have some density and not feel like paper because it's resting on warm low end frequencies even if there isn't much.

Modulation effects are an important part of your mixing toolkit.
They’re the special way to add movement and groove to sounds that need a little something extra.
The main types of modulation are Tremolo, Ring Mod, Chorus, Phaser and Flanger.
Despite the different types, all modulation effects have something in common…
They all achieve their effect by modulating an aspect of the signal with an LFO (low frequency oscillator). The style of modulation is different depending on whether the LFO is manipulating the pitch, timing or volume of the signal.
Modulation LFOs work similarly to how LFOs are used in synthesis.
In this article I’ll go through all the common types of modulation, how they work and the best modulation plugins for each.
Tremolo
Tremolo is an amplitude modulation effect. Amplitude modulation plugins vary the volume of your signal.
It’s the easiest type of modulation to understand because you can easily hear the effect of the LFO settings on your sound.
A softer, rounded sine wave shape will create a gentle bobbing tremolo, while a steep square wave will create a machine gun stutter.

Tremolo is commonly found on vintage guitar amps, so it’s associated with early guitar genres like surf and country.
But it can be a very interesting effect on all kinds of sources. Try using tremolo to create rhythmic action on sustained sources like synth pads or drones.

Ring Mod is basically an extreme application of tremolo. It uses the same amplitude modulation principle.

LFO frequencies used for tremolo are far below the range we can perceive as a distinct tone.
As you increase the LFO frequency into the audible range, additional tones called sidebands begin to develop in the signal.
The sidebands can be quite dissonant since they’re not evenly related to each other or the original sound.
This can result in some bizarre robotic effects and strange textures. Ring Mod is probably best known for creating the voices of the Daleks on Doctor Who.
Ring Mod is used significantly less than other types of modulation, so I’ll keep it simple for examples.

Chorus
Chorus is another form of simple modulation. Chorus plugins make a copy of the signal and vary its pitch up and down.
Blending the dry and modulated signals gives a shimmery, detuned tone that can add depth and dimension to a sound.
If modulating a sound’s pitch with an LFO is ringing a bell, you’re on the right track. By using 100% of the modulated signal instead of blending it with the dry, you’ll get a vibrato effect,
Varying the characteristics of the LFO results in changes to the sound. Increasing the frequency of the LFO makes the rate faster while increasing the amplitude makes the depth more intense.
The first chorus effects created their modulated signals using analog bucket brigade device chips (BBDs).
These chips couldn’t copy the input signal perfectly, but the warm tone and fluid modulation they provided became a classic sound.

Phaser
A phaser is an effect that manipulates the phase of the signal with an LFO.
Imagine a sine wave on a graph. The phase is the starting position of the waveform along the x-axis expressed as an angle.
The phaser effect is created by splitting the signal and sending it through a series of “all-pass” filters that alter the phase.

When the dry and phase-shifted signals are combined, any frequencies that are inverted 180 degrees cancel out, resulting in the characteristic notches.
As the LFO sweeps, notches will appear at different frequencies. Each all-pass “stage” introduces more notches into the sound.
This creates the churning frequency shifting character of phaser effects.

Flanger
Flanger is the original modulation effect. It’s the recognizable “jet engine taking off” sound.
The first flanging was created with two tape machines playing identical tracks at the same time.
Applying pressure to the edge of the reel (or “flange”) of one machine would cause it to slow down and play back out of sync.

LFOs are used to modulate the delay time in place of manually slowing down the tape in today’s flangers.

They’re great for thickening and stereo widening as well as that classic jet plane sound.

Working With Parallel Compression
Parallel Compression is one of my favourite mixing techniques, you can blend the natural and dynamic original source with an punchy and aggressive compressed copy. You get the best of both worlds. I'll describe what exactly parallel compression is and talk about a few ways I use it in my mixes.
So what is Parallel Compression?
Well simply put, you either make a copy of a track, or route it to an auxiliary input to create two tracks playing together. Leave the first track as is, and then add compression to the second track. Then you can blend the track in to taste.
Setup
I'm primarily a Pro Tools guys, so I'll describe the setup in Pro Tools. This same principle can be applied to any DAW. Let's say I have a mono kick drum track. I'll add a mono send to a internal bus, let's say Bus 1 for this example. I then create a mono aux track, and set its input to Bus 1. This create two outputs for the kick. Then, I add a compressor to the aux track. I usually solo the aux track and adjust the compressor settings to where I like it. Then I pull the aux fader down to -∞. Then I'll solo both the kick and kick aux channels together, and gradually pull up the aux track until I start to hear the extra punch it gives. And thats the setup!
Some Tips For Using Parallel Compression
- Use pre-fader sends. This prevents the level coming into the aux track from changing, which would result in the compression changing as well. Keep that consistent.
- Create multiple aux compression tracks and blend. One of our engineers, Brad Smith, showed me how he will create 2 or 3 auxiliary busses for his drums, and each has a different compressor. He can then blend multiple parallel compression sounds together depending on the style of the song.
- Some compressor plug-ins have a built in "mix" feature, which allows you to do parallel compression without having to create a separate track. Take advantage! One plugin I use that has that feature is the UAD Fairchild 670 on my mix bus.
- Don't be afraid to compress hard on the parallel tracks. They may sound pretty squashed by themselves, but once blended, they provide a lot of punch and the uncompressed version keeps the original tonality.

Hans Florian Zimmer born 12/09/1957 is film composer and music producer that has created music for over 100 different films and is the head of the film music division at dream works studios. Hans Zimmer is one of the composers I picked for most influential in sound to film because of the impact he's made on the sound to film industry, So many directors get producers to copy Hans Zimmers work in their on style for their projects because, of how engrossing his soundtracks are and how they bring life to to visuals this is why he clearly is one of the most influential. Some of Hans Zimmer’s best soundtracks are Time (Inception), The Dark Knight, Now We Are Free (Gladiator) & Lion King the soundtracks to these films are beautifully created the way the music fits perfectly with the films and brings out the different emotions you feel when watching and listening the soundtracks really draw the viewers into the film and gives them the sense and feel of the setting in the film and thats the main goal of a soundtrack. Hans Zimmer started his career as producer making pop music & a synthesier keyboardist for the band Krakatoa in the 1970s but before that his love for music started at 3 years old when he started learning how to play the piano, 3 years later he realised he wanted to become a composer. It was after his father died when Has Zimmer decided he was going to take his music seriously, at the age of 14 he moved to England where he attended many schools which he had been kicked out because of his love of music and wanting to spend more time making music then actually doing schoolwork. His career as being a composer took off when the famed composer and mentor to Hans Zimmer Stanley Myers asked Hans to collaborate with him on one of his film projects called My Beautiful Launderette after working with Stanley Myers Hans Zimmer went on to creating music for his own film projects and quickly rose to the top as one of the pioneers for sound to picture, his unique technique of blending old and modern musical technologies into his music defiantly made his music stand out compared to other composers of his time. The equipment Hans Zimmer uses to create his music is a mix between live and electronic he produces in cubase and uses UAD plugins & a software synth called zebra, but also blends live instruments into the music he usually will hire a group of session musicians to come in and play instruments for him as he records them, the reason he does this is because he said he wants to keep orchestral music live, he also said he spends most of his time on the arrangement of track and looking for the best musicians for the piece he is creating, a lot of the hardware in his studio is custom built like his sampler. The Berlin Wall had a effect on Hans Zimmer and his family and it was probably the reason they moved to England in 1971 the oppressive state of Germany not only had a impact on the people it had a impact on a lot of different things including music, but the move to England was a good thing for Hans Zimmer electronic music in the early 70s was taking off especially in England with bands like Pink Floyd & The Beatles, the uses of synthesizers in electronic music such as dubstep & disco was becoming more popular not only in electronic music but in sound to picture as well this was good for composer such as Hans Zimmer.

Evangelos Odysseus Papathanassiou born on 29/03/1943 aka Vangelis is a greek composer, musician and record producer that specializes in electronic, ambient, progressive, jazz & orchestral music, he is well known in the sound to picture world for his work on Blade Runner, Chariots of Fire & many more hit films. Vangelis started his career after taking his piano lessons he then went on to working with big bands such as Forminx & Aphrodite's Child in the 1960s. During working with bands and his own music he was composing music for animal documentaries, the music he created for these animal documentaries was recongnised by many and brought him into view of mainstream sound to picture this is where his career as a composer really took off, in 1980 he formed a musical partnership with Jon Anderson lead singer of rock band Yes they then went on to release several albums together. In 1981 VangelIs created the score to the Oscar winning film Chariots of Fire. Vangelis music had a impact on electronic music from all different genres artists would take elements of Vangelis sound and apply it to there music his music has even been sampled by other big artists and producers such as Outkast, Future Sound of London, J Dilla & many more. He moved to London in 1974 and opened up his own studio near Marble Arch called Nemo Studios in 1975. There was a Greek military junta in Greece during 1967-1974 this was props the reason for Vangelis moving to England not only that the electronic music scene was expanding during them times so he probably moved to better himself as well.
