10 ESSENTIAL GARDENING TOOLS FOR BEGINNERS [GARDENING FOR BEGINNERS]
TOP 10 ESSENTIAL TOOLS THAT A BEGINNER GARDENER NEEDS.
Starting a garden is exciting, but it can also be very frustrating. You must first decide what you want to grow and where you want it to grow. And there’s the matter of figuring out how to make it happen. Unfortunately, planting isn’t as easy as sowing seeds and waiting for nature to take its course. You’ll need to put in a lot of effort, and you’ll need tools to assist you.
There are so many garden equipment, devices, and accessories available that deciding which is best for your outdoor projects can be daunting. However, there are a few lawn and garden resources that almost everyone uses on a daily basis.
When it comes to landscaping equipment, it’s easy to go overboard. They can take up a lot of space and cost a lot of money, but keeping your shed or storage area concentrated on the basics can prevent it from being overcrowded. Investing in the highest-quality tools your budget allows and maintaining them properly will help you get the most out of your investment.
Here’s a list of the top 10 essential tools that a beginner gardener needs.
10. GARDEN GLOVES.
Gloves do not come to mind when thinking of gardening equipment, but they are one of the most important accessories you can have because they protect the most valuable tool: your hands. Furthermore, they protect the wrists and arms from bruises, callouses, and dirt.
The type of gloves you need will be decided by the work you’re doing. Long rose garden gloves will protect you from scratches if you work with a lot of thorny plants. If you have calloused hands from yard work, look for work gloves with a leather palm. There are plenty of cheap and lightweight gloves to choose from if you’re mainly only digging in soft soil and tending to your vegetable garden.
9. HORI HORI GARDEN KNIFE.
Because of its versatility, a Hori Hori is always the first tool I recommend to new gardeners. It’s a Japanese tool that can be used as a knife, a shovel, a ruler, among other items.
Use it to dig holes for planting– it’s handy for seed planting because the blade can be used to calculate the depth of the hole. The blade’s form is also suitable for transplanting, as it slips quickly into the pot to remove the seedling. Weeding and loosening the soil with a Hori Hori was also a breeze. Many models come with a belt holder, which is understandable given how often gardeners reach for this tool.
8. ROUND HEAD SHOVEL.
There are many different types of shovels and spaces available in various styles and sizes, but a good quality round head shovel can give you the most bang for your buck and handle most digging tasks.
Break up dirt with a hammer, dig wider pits, and transplant soil. It can quickly take the place of a spade or garden hoe in a pinch.
A hand trowel is the ideal digging method for container gardeners who don’t need a shovel. It’s great for moving soil into containers and transplanting seedlings.
7. PRUNING SHEARS.
Pruning shears are a gardener’s best-of-both-worlds weapon. They’re perfect for pruning and harvesting delicate plants like herbs, as well as cutting and trimming light branches.
Look for all-steel shears, which can cut branches up to 5/8′′ thick. These pruners can come in handy in your vegetable garden, as well as with bushes and shrubs and some small tree branches.
6. HAND CULTIVATOR.
Depending on the type of job you need to do, there are a few different designs and types of hand rakes to choose from. Find a three-pronged cultivator with durable tines for an all-purpose tool.
It can be used to remove leaves or spread mulch. A good cultivator may also be used to break up dirt, transform the soil, and incorporate compost. They’re also great for digging out weeds, especially in tight spaces between plants. Although larger tools are needed for a large patch of yard, a hand cultivator is suitable for flower and garden beds and container gardens.
5. BOW RAKE.
A bow rake is useful when working with larger areas. Spread soil or compost, remove leaves from a garden bed, or split up and turn soil with it. You may be able to get away with using your bow rake for several tasks that would normally need a spading fork when you’re first starting out.
A bow rake may be used to collect leaves or grass clippings on your lawn for other yard work, saving you money on a yard rake. They can also be used to spread mulch.
4. GARDEN HOSE.
Watering your lawn, flower beds, vegetable gardens, and outdoor container gardens is simple with a garden hose. Look for a hose that is both durable and long enough to cover all four corners of your yard from your spigot.
If weight is an issue, opt for a lightweight expandable hose like the Pocket Hose instead of a conventional rubber hose.
3. DIGGING SPADE.
A garden spade is suitable for digging jobs that involve anything larger than a trowel but smaller than a shovel. It is mostly used to dig holes for trees, shrubs, and large flower plants, but it can also be used to shovel dirt, compost, and organic fertilizer from a pit, container, or wheelbarrow, as well as to cut a trench or slicing off thick turf.
It may also aid in removing small tree roots, so keep them sharp at all times.
2. POTS.
Plants can be shipped in containers, which makes them an excellent gardening tool. They’re great for people who live in apartments and don’t have access to a greenhouse or for people who move around a lot and want to bring their plants with them.
Pots come in a range of sizes, from small ones for desktop succulents to big ones for trees or portable veggie gardens. Plastic pots, terracotta pots, and ceramic pots are available in various colors to fit your desired aesthetic (or you can paint your own).
1. WATERING CAN.
For those with smaller gardens, a watering can is ideal. It helps a gardener carry water to their plants and water many plants at a time before refilling (it sure beats running back and forth with a small cup!). Watering cans are available in a number of sizes and are usually made of metal or plastic.
So there you have it: ten essential gardening tools for beginners. There are various additional resources available to aid the operation, but you don’t need much to get started. Start small and develop your plant and tool collection as you go if you want to start gardening as a rewarding hobby.
The books we recommend, go into more detail on the tools you need.

What are your thoughts on living mulch or planting in guilds? Like comfrey or clover or the like? Because I've come under the impression, reading various permaculture and gaia's garden type books that mulching isn't the most ecological or efficient way to protect plants from weeds or pests (at least, mulching with chemical-soaked wood chips anyway). Can you give me some more info on mulch?
oh great question. I kinda reblogged that meme just because I like seeing memes about mulch, but here is my actual take. as far as I know, mulch has two basic functions in permaculture: 1) to block weeds from growing by shading them out, and 2) to build organic matter in soil and get it ready for planting. compared to plant guilds, mulching might not be the very best way to prevent weeds & pests, but it does an ok job at function 1 and actually does a KICKASS job at function 2.
for function 1: wood chips are really great for paths, but I like to use straw and especially rotted straw/hay on things like annual beds. rotted straw is great because no one except gardeners really have any use for it so you can get it for cheap (or free honestly) and save it from being completely wasted. also it’s easy to move around, so you can reuse it as mulch in a few different places if you’re doing something like prepping beds before you have the chance to plant.
for function 2: SHEET MULCHING! also known as mulch lasagna. this is by far the easiest, cheapest, best way to prepare a site for planting and gives you gorgeous soil. it’s basically building compost in place. everyone has a different “recipe” but this is a nice basic one. challenge yourself to get all of the materials for free and get a bunch of friends to help you!WHAT YOU NEED:- a lot of cardboard (check local grocery stores) - ideal cardboard will not have much tape or colored inks - or a lot of newspaper with the glossy sections taken out- nitrogen: compost, manure, grass clippings, fresh leaves, vegetables that you dumpster dived- carbon: rotted straw, regular straw, dead leaves, small wood chips, shredded newspaper, anything that is free to you and dead and brown- finished compost and/or topsoil
STEP 1: weedwhack or scythe your planting site and leave all of the clippings there. if the soil is very compacted, consider going over it with a broadfork.STEP 2: make a layer of cardboard/newspaper over your planting site and wet it all down really well with a hose. it should be soaked.STEP 3: spread your nitrogen layer about an inch or two thick. wet it downSTEP 4: spread your carbon layer about eight inches thick. if you’re using REALLY carbon-heavy material (i.e. wood chips or thick hay) add a sprinkle more nitrogen. then Wet! It! DownSTEP 5: add about a 2 inch layer of finished compost mixed with topsoil and, you guessed it, wet it downSTEP 6: top it off with a 2-inch layer of pretty-looking organic matter, like straw, wood chips, or wood shavings. this will protect your beautiful mulch lasagna and also make it look cute.
NEXT: if you’re doing this in the fall/winter, leave it alone and take a nap! it will be so beautiful to plant into in the spring. if you’re doing this in the spring/summer and want to plant into it within the next few weeks, just push the top layer aside and plant your seeds or starts into the compost layer.

The Best Garden Tillers According to Hyperenthusiastic Reviewers
Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed products and single out the most convincing ones. (You can learn more about our rating system and how we pick each item here.)
And while we’ve written about lots of landscaping gear before — including garden hoses and leaf blowers — here, we’ve rounded up the best garden tillers as praised by the most enthusiastic reviewers on Amazon.
More than 40 percent of reviewers describe this electric garden tiller as powerful. One reviewer, who used this on a flower bed that hadn’t been tended to in decade, said, “It powered through everything, the roots of old rosemary shrubs, weed stems, larger chunks of old mulch, it ground them all up and dug deep into the dirt and mixed it all up nice.” Another reviewer, working with hard clay soil, writes, “It practically cut through concrete and was able to go to a depth of 6-8.” But reviewers with soft soil like it too: “The soil itself was fairly soft and unchallenging, but even at that, I was shocked at how quickly this tiller busted it up into a surprisingly fluffy soil.” Many also say it’s easy to operate and appreciate that it comes almost completely assembled. Plus, it’s electric, which is a huge selling point for many. “Unlike my gas ones though, it’s easy to turn it off, and it actually starts right back up again, doesn’t stink, and you don’t run out of gas halfway through … so far has made short, albeit back breaking, work of tilling up my garden,” explains one reviewer. The only fear one reviewer has is that it has “almost has too much power, so you have to be careful when you hit a rock or thick root as you can break a tine or overheat the motor; but the quick release stop works great.”
“I didn’t have high expectations for this product considering its low price, it being electric, and the toughness of the dirt where I live,” writes one reviewer, but their fears were eased once this tiller arrived. “As soon as I pressed the power button, this thing took off like a rocket. I live in north Georgia, right at the North Carolina line and our soil here isn’t all that friendly when it comes to landscaping or digging because of the thick red clay and large natural stones. This tiller dug in without any issue.” And much like our best-rated tiller, this one from Earthwise also gets a lot of praise for its smaller size, especially for those with small gardens or flower beds. “Used this to till for a 20x20 foot wildflower plot,” one reviewer writes. “Did a great job of cutting through the fairly thin turf and the clay soil, tilling down a few inches.” Another says, “It was very easy to put together and has just the right amount of power needed in a flower bed.” And one says, “There is enough power to even work through the hard clay we have.” The flip side, however, is that “It takes more passes than a full size tiller because it is small, but overall I still think it was easier because it is just so easy to use.”
“This thing really is the little roto-tiller that could,” one reviewer writes of this Sun Joe machine. “We have VERY heavy clay soil that is full of rocks/stones and roots ranging from pencil thickness to several inches in diameter. This bad boy took it all on no problem. It simply chucks the rocks out of the way.” And though it looks like a toy, one reviewer swears, “This machine is a BEAST. I tilled up a hundred square feet of rock-hard ground that is a clay and river cobble mixture to a depth of six to eight inches in short order.” Many say this is also the ideal tiller for a small garden. “My vegetable garden is about 20 by 35, it is a rear tine tiller for something around that size,” one says, while another used it to till their 360-square-foot “garden area in an hour or less.” And while many reviewers prefer electric tillers to gas ones because they don’t require multiple cranks to start up and you don’t have to fuss with mixing gas and oil to fuel it, one downside is needing to plug in with a cord. However, it’s not a dealbreaker. As one reviewer explains, “The cord is a pain, but I have found a way to control it and don’t have to worry about having enough gas in the gas cans.”
This Sun Joe electric garden tiller is nearly the same as the one previously mentioned, but it’s got a slightly more powerful motor with 13.5 amps, rather than 12. And according to one reviewer, “No regrets paying more for the 13.5 amp motor.” They describe it as a beast, explaining, “My backyard had a mulched area that was kept in disarray by the previous owner. I wanted to get rid of the iris, weed and other undesirable plants. This tiller shredded the area pulling out the weed and the roots.” Others agree that the extra power gets any size job done. “I tilled ground that was clay and compacted with rocks, buried pieces of wood, fabric pieces decomposing, beer bottles,” one writes, adding, “The tiller cut through this like butter.” Another says, “I did an area about 40x25 in no time on our first nice day, and it never lacked for power.” And even though it packs a punch, it is still easy to handle, according to more than a quarter of reviewers. One reports it “handles as easily as a vacuum cleaner albeit more bouncy.” One word of warning, since this tiller is not cordless: You’ll need “AT LEAST a 14-gauge extension cord … Long runs over 50-feet will need 12-gauge which isn’t cheap but nice cables to have anyways.”
While reviewers admit this tiller isn’t powerful enough to break through new ground, they do say it’s ideal for mixing up soil in their flower beds. “I have 200 sq ft of 4x4 raised beds and this is perfect for turning over the soil in the whole box or just a space between plants,” says one reviewer. Another who calls this “a kitchen mixing machine for the soil” says, “It’s not a tractor, it instead is great for breaking up soil in one spot, like if you want to plant something like a rose bush and you need to break up the soil and/or mix in soil amendments.” Another compares it to an egg-beater, because “it loosens dirt adequately to about a 4-inch depth and keeps me off my aging knees.” The fact that it’s cordless keeps this tiller lightweight and easy-to-operate, too. Reviewers say batteries last between 30 minutes and an hour, enough for these smaller projects, though one reports that one charge “made it for 2+ thorough passes of a 15X3 ft space.”
“This little machine will dig to China if you let it,” says one reviewer, and 75 percent of reviewers give this Mantis gas tiller five stars. One reviewer, with “decades of experience with Mantis tillers,” says, “You really can convert an established lawn into a plantable bed without first scraping off the sod” with this thing. Another says that despite the power, it’s still “very easy to make it till or cultivate.” They continue, “Rocks I couldn’t see did not stop this mean machine.” And while some note it works in their small gardens, others have taken this to their entire backyard: “We did an entire backyard border with the Mantis tiller and it did an amazingly excellent job of prepping the soil. It was powerful, dug deep for planting shrubs and whatever we wanted. Cleaning it is a breeze and its light weight makes it very enjoyable to use.” As for fuel, one user says, “I can till my entire garden on less than a tank.”
“It is light, but, man, does it dig in,” one reviewer says of this four-cycle gas tiller. One says it’s “Great for gardening, installing landscaping beds, trenching for rock borders, Hell, I even used mine to dig a 3-foot deep trench for a drain-tiled downspout.” The main advantage of this four-cycle tiller, compared to the two-cycle above, is that it doesn’t require a mix of oil and gas. That means the set-up is pretty quick. “Thirty minutes out of the box to tines in the ground. Oiled, gassed up, and primed, it started on the second pull; bonus, it’s quiet,” one reviewer writes. Another says it “has the torque and ease of operation wrapped into one unit,” and others say it also offers more control. “It really digs in when tilling and In an established garden, you can get right in around your plants without destroying half the garden.”
Bob Crewe is an expert on garden tillers, but when he needed one at his suburban Chicago home, he rented it.
That's about to change.
"This might be the season when I finally pick one up," said Crewe, who works for Power Equipment Direct, an online home equipment store. "If you already have one waiting for you, you're more apt to go out and get to it."
The advantages of owning or renting a mini tractor -- or its smaller cousin, a cultivator -- are many.
Tillers and cultivators are useful for turning soil, mixing in compost and fertilizer for soil amendment and loosening soil to help water reach plant roots.
Gardeners are firing up their tillers now to prepare flower beds and vegetable gardens for planting. This year's early spring has brought strong demand for tillers, said Joseph Cohen, CEO of Snow Joe, a garden equipment company headquartered in Edison, N.J.
"No one expected to be in the garden this early. I've never seen demand this early," Cohen said.
In summer, tillers and cultivators can weed between vegetable rows, said Barbara Hastings, senior manager of marketing and communication for Troy-Bilt brand of outdoor equipment. The company is headquartered in Valley City.
Come fall, tillers plough garden waste back into the soil to decompose over the winter, Hastings said.
Many homeowners like to rent a tiller just for a few hours, and let someone else deal with maintenance and storage. Fees at tool rental companies can run from $29 for a two-hour rental of a small tiller up to $85 for a 24-hour rental of a large unit. Rental companies typically ask for a deposit.
But, when you rent a tiller, transportation is your headache. That means lifting a heavy unit in and out of the car, and protecting the car trunk from dirt and mud, Crewe said. You may also need to wash and dry the tiller before returning it.
If you rent a tiller every year, the fees will soon equal what a new tool would cost. Plus, owning a tiller means no more working with one eye on the clock.

When is the best time of year for a landscape installation? It is generally agreed that fall and spring are the best seasons to plant. These allow for the best opportunities for maximum growth for newly planted seeds and bulbs. Summer and winter months are not ideal for landscape installation, but lawns still need regular watering during these months to ensure proper growth.
How often should I cut my grass? Mowing a lawn approximately once a week will keep it short, clean, and beautiful.
How can I get rid of crabgrass? Applying a pre-emergent in the spring will help prevent crabgrass from germinating and taking over your lawn in the following seasons.
How much should I water my trees? There is an easy formula to follow: 10gallons/inch/week. Adult trees require ten gallons of water, per inch in diameter, per week. Remember to water the trees even in winter, as colder weather can cause trees to quickly dry out and die. Water younger trees especially often.
Should I aerate my lawn? How often? Every lawn will benefit from regular aerating. We recommend having this process done at least once a year.
What types of plants are best for my hedge? Best Albuquerque Handyman & Remodeling has a variety of hedge tree options. We can suggest the best type for you based on your height and maintenance preferences.
How can I protect my landscape from pests? Pests can potentially eat almost every kind of plant in a landscape, although they do have their preferences. Repellents and traps can be used to deter most pests, although some are harder to keep away than others.  Best Albuquerque Handyman & Remodeling is experienced at removing all pests native to the Albuquerque NM.

kit carl klehm Top service provider. Organic gardening encompasses a lot of techniques. It covers items such as seeds, tools, techniques, and other such things. There are so many ways that you can grow your own organic garden, either for enjoyment or for improving your overall diet. This article has advice that can help you find what you need.

Hang shiny silver objects throughout your garden. These can act as natural pest deterrents; no need for chemicals. The reflections can disorient flying pests such as aphids that require the sun to direct their flight, and may frighten off larger pests such as birds, and even rabbits or deer.
A great way to calculate the timing for planting your plants in an organic garden is to use a seed-starting chart. You should do your research and fill in the chart in advance. Once you have it, you can use the chart to plan your planting through the entire season.
Coat your flower beds with a few inches of an organic mulch. By doing this, you can lock in moisture, discourage weed growth, and nourish your plants. This will also make your flowers appear beautiful and finished all year long.
To conserve water when you're gardening, be sure to use three inches of organic mulch. The mulch will help your plants to absorb the water slowly over time, allowing you to use less water than you normally would. Many natural materials make great mulch, including pine needles and many types of leaves.
Collecting rainwater is the natural way to supply yourself with water for all your organic gardening needs. You can simply build your own system of rain barrels or buy them ready made. That way, you won't have to pay for water for your garden or lawn maintenance. Caution is needed! Covers are suggested to cut down on mosquitoes and other pests that can be attracted to standing water.
Planting a living hedge around your property has many benefits. Hedges provide a softer barrier to mark the perimeter of your property and are less forbidding than a structured wall. A living hedge will provide privacy but still discourage trespassing by animals or people. If you have a hedge that blooms, it can be a lovely backdrop in addition to your landscape.

kit carl klehm Most excellent service provider. If your garden shed is far from your garden, try to carry your frequently used tools with you. This will save you time by helping you avoid making many trips to your shed to get tools. If you will need more tools than you can carry, you could consider using a wagon or a bucket to hold all of your tools.
When you first begin using organic produce you will realize that it tends to rot quite a bit faster. This is because less preservatives are used. Having a lower shelf life means that you need to cook or eat the produce a little bit faster than you would normal store bought options.
One of the more rewarding hobbies is organic gardening. Organic gardening will give you a great idea of the gardening process.
If you want to have great organic produce but are unable to grow it yourself, then you should be sure to check out your local farmer's market. These places always have a different rotation of produce but typically have great prices for some of the best products that you can find in the area.
To prepare the ground for your organic perennial plants, simply cut the turf and turn it over a few weeks before planting time. Spread wood chips a few inches deep on the freshly-turned soil, and within a couple of weeks the ground will be ideal for your organic perennials. These hardy plants need only a little bit of preparation.

I kit carl klehm Best service provider. f organic gardening is something that you are interested in, make sure you do your research. There are so many resources available in print and also on the internet. Find out what you need to get started in your organic gardening ventures. It can be fun and rewarding in the end.
Water your organic garden, thoroughly. If you only water your garden for brief periods, the water will stay near the surface of the soil and the roots of your plant will likewise stay near the surface of the soil. To establish deep, strong roots on your plants, water the ground thoroughly, so that the water and roots travel deep into the soil.
Compost is a key component in many organic gardening plans. The wise gardener can minimize his or her effort by composting in small batches directly adjacent to the planting beds that will require compost. This saves the time that would otherwise be required to cart compost out of a single, centralized pile.
If you have aphids on your plants, and do not want to use harmful bug sprays, you can use soapy water. A very diluted soapy water can be sprayed on all areas of the plant, the leaves, stems and buds. After you spray the soapy water, spray with clean water. This will get the aphids off your plants.
Get rid of aphids naturally. Most aphids are taken care of by beneficial insects in the garden, but sometimes you will find an infestation. Aphids can cause plants to be stunted or distorted, and can create a sticky mold that will quickly spread from one plant to another. Use a homemade spray to blast aphids off the plant. A forceful jet of water 2-3 times a day will quickly get rid of them. For a stronger infestation, use insecticidal soap.
While caring for your organic garden involves many big, day-long tasks, it also calls for smaller jobs that need to be performed more frequently. Keep a good handle on the minor needs of your garden so that you can make good use of brief periods of free time. When you have a few minutes to spare, why not use them weeding, pruning or performing other garden maintenance tasks?

There are some right ways and wrong ways to apply this knowledge, but there is so much potential for making your garden unique. Hopefully, this article has given you some advice on how to make organic gardening work for you.

Dethatching vs Aerating: What’s The Difference?
So, you have heard from a neighbor or maybe at the plant nursery that aerating your lawn is important for good lawn health. Another friend of yours says that dethatching your lawn is what you need to do.
Which one should you do? Aren’t they both the same thing, anyways? They are not the same thing, but they do accomplish similar goals toward invigorating your lawn.
Here we will break down the similarities and differences between dethatching and aerating and provide guidance on how to determine when to do either.
First, a bit about roots
To understand the need for either dethatching or aerating, you need to understand a little bit about plant roots. In grade school, many of us were taught that animals breathe oxygen and plants breathe carbon dioxide.
That last bit is completely false. I remember growing up hearing about plans to terraform Mars with mass plantings of trees to “breathe in” all the carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Complete nonsense.
Plants breathe oxygen. Take a look at any plant cell under a microscope (with a proper histological stain) and you will see several sets of organelles, including mitochondria and chloroplasts.
Chloroplasts “fix” carbon taken from sequestered carbon dioxide and convert it into chains of carbon to make sugars using the energy harvested from sunlight. Mitochondria in plants, just like your mitochondria in your cells, consume oxygen to drive a series of ion pumps to produce energy for the cell.
What’s this have to do with dethatching and aerating? Well, plant roots breathe oxygen.
Ever overwater a houseplant, only to find a week later that it breaks off dead at the soil surface? That’s because when you drown the roots you caused them to suffocate and die.
Plant roots breathe best in soils that have between 40-60% air space and thrive best in clay loams or sandy loams. Anything less, as far as air space, stunts root development and plant vigor.
Both processes of dethatching and aeration aim to improve access of roots to air and assist in improving plant vigor and growth. Below, we will draw distinctions between the two processes and provide tips on when and when not to do them.
Dethatching
Tumblr media
What is thatch?
Thatch consists of the dead organic matter (grass, leaves, flowers, and fruit) that accumulate on the soil surface in your lawn. It is a good thing.
Thatch gradually decays into humus, which adds nutrients to the soil. That is a main reason why mulching blades (for example, the MaxPower Universal Gold) have become so popular for mowers. Cut the lawn, but put cuttings back in the lawn.
A thick mat of thatch helps to hold moisture in the soil and buffers the effects of drought conditions for your lawn. It also acts as an insulation barrier, reducing soil heating during the day to maintain more ideal soil temperatures for grass growth (50-65°F for cool climate turf grasses, 64-85+°F for warm climate turf grasses).
Too much of a good thing is not good at all. An excessively thick thatch in your lawn will reduce oxygenation of the soil by acting as a physical cap or barrier and will reduce the bacterial growth which is needed to assist in the breakdown of organic matter.
A thick lawn thatch also tends to promote shallow root system growth into the thatch. During heavy rains, the thatch will retain water, which will restrict oxygen access to the deeper root bed and drown the roots in the thatch.
Thatch has a tendency to heat up quickly under hot conditions and also dry out quickly. This will leave the roots growing in thatch vulnerable.
Further, an excessively thick thatch layer is an open invitation to a variety of turf grass pests, of both the fungal and insect kind, and increases disease stress on your lawn. A thick thatch layer is usually more a symptom of improper watering and fertilization of the lawn.
Methods of dethatching
1. Soil topdressing
Soil topdressing is a method of spreading a thin layer of soil over the turf (compost or Michigan Peat). This is usually preceded by coring (aeration).
The procedure brings soil in better contact with the thatch to increase microbial decomposition, thus thinning the thatch. Typically, this is part of a longer-term solution used also to improve soil health.
Apply thin layers of soil in the early spring. Several applications of thin layers are much better than a thick layer, which leads to a lot of other problems.
Keep layers to ¼ inch or less and apply every 2-3 weeks. Rake in the soil gently.
2. Hand cultivation with a thatching rake
A thatching rake is a manual gardening tool that is appropriate for dethatching small lawns. They can be easily found at your local hardware store or online (such as the rake by True Temper).
The blades of the rake are used to loosen and pull up the thatch layer. Rake across the turf until the surface soil can be seen, then remove the loosened thatch.
3. Power rake
A power rake resembles a large mower and is typically used only by lawn care companies (such as the Billy Goat PR550H). Its operation must be carefully conducted to prevent permanent damage to the lawn, so leave it to the professionals.
Under the machine is a rotary bar with tines which do the same job as your manual thatching rake, just under power. This option should be used (1) if dethatching is necessary (thatch is thicker than 1 inch) and (2) if you have a large lawn where manual dethatching is just not feasible.
4. Vertical mower
A vertical mower resembles a tiller and is actually a type of shallow tiller (such as the SunJoe AJ801E). It will dethatch the lawn by cutting parallel swaths through the turf and thatch.
This removes thatch and exposes deeper soil for good aeration. However, its use is traumatic to lawns and with a lot of root mass breakage, lawns will temporarily yellow.
The upside is that a healthy lawn will recover quickly.
When to dethatch
Press down on the turf with your hand. If it feels like a mattress (bouncy, spongy), there is a substantial thatch mat in your lawn.
Spread the grass and look for new grass shoots. If the mat is thick, new shoots will not be able to grow and reach sunlight.
If it is densely matted, shoots will not be able to emerge at all. Dethatching is necessary. This should be performed during spring growth.
If the thatch is less than ¾ inch, this indicates a healthy lawn and dethatching is not recommended.
Aeration
Tumblr media
Aeration involves periodically cutting small, ½-inch plugs from the turf. This is typically performed with a power walk-behind or a tow-behind machine (for example, the AgriFab 48-Inch). I cannot fathom doing this manually, but there are manual aerators (Jumbo Varieties Lawn Aerator Shoes).

7 Easy, Effective Water Saving Garden Tips
Why do you need water saving garden tips? You probably have rain drumming down on your roof at this very moment.
However, we use 30-60% of our household water in the garden during the summer.  And even in ‘rainy England’, we experience droughts and hosepipe bans every few years.
And if your water is metered, then water saving garden tips will help you save money. Provided, of course, that they are easy enough to turn into a habit.
The charity Hubbub is running a #tapchat campaign to conserve water. They say that the South East of England, where we live, gets much the same rainfall as Melbourne, Australia.
Oddly enough, I spend about several weeks a year in Melbourne where I’ve met some wonderful garden owners. Everyone’s attitude towards water is quite different from here. They are much more aware of the need to save water than we are.
Water saving garden butts?
Let’s start with water butts. Yes, they save water. And saving water saves money if you’re metered (see more below!).
But, in the South East of England, Melbourne and any other ‘water-stressed’ part of the world, you need large water butts. I’d suggest starting at 210 litres, and if you can fit a bigger one in, go for it.
I have a 90-litre water butt attached to a small garden shed. It waters my garden for 3-4 days. Last summer, we had a nine-week drought. So it stood empty for most of the summer.
This 90-litre water butt doesn’t last long if you live in a dry area, but if you live in a rainy area, it would be more useful.
If, however, we’d lived in a rainy part of the country, it would have re-filled over and over again. And when it is full, it’s really useful to have a water source in that part of the garden.
So I’m not saying anything against water butts. Just that you need them to be as large as possible.
I have two much larger water butts (total around 600 litres), connected to each other,  taking the rainwater off two other sheds. These last for about two weeks when watering all the veg beds and pots. However, they are a very useful supply of water in a part of the garden that doesn’t have a tap.
You could get lots of water from your roof’s guttering. Many water butts today are sold with ‘diverter kits’ so you can divert your guttering rainwater into them.  The Harcostar 350 litre Magnum Water butt with diverter is the one I’d choose if I was doing this.
But do make sure you’ve sorted out where water will go if the butt is full.
How much money does a water butt save you?
This made me realise how much water a garden uses.
If you’re metered, then water butts will save you some money, especially if you live in a rainy area. (That’s because they re-fill regularly.)
How much money does a water butt save you?
Thames Water says that a litre of tap water costs 0.097p. So my 90 litre water butt saves me about nine pence. The 600L water butts save me 60-70 pence between them.
At that rate, it would take you years to repay the cost of buying the water butt in the first place. However, they do last forever. And if you have a pond, it should be re-filled with rainwater, so a butt is the best way of getting that.
Plus there’s the bigger picture. If one gardener like me saves 600 litres of water in a fortnight, then one thousand gardeners could save 600,000 litres of water by using butts. That adds up to nearly two million litres of water saved in an average summer, even if the butts aren’t always refilled by rain. There are an estimated 27 million people who garden in the UK, so you can multiply that up again.
And we once had a bad household leak. It was the equivalent of a tap running day and night for three weeks. We got a water bill for £8,000. As it was a leak, we didn’t have to pay it, but it made me aware of how much water adds up to.
Re-using household water in the garden
Reusing household water for the garden is another commonly advised tip. It’s called ‘grey water’. My sister in law, for example, pours water from the condenser drier into a watering can to feed plants instead of throwing it down the sink.
Although water down the sink is recycled by town sewage system, it has to be treated. So you’re adding to the volume of water that has to be treated. And, once again, you’re paying for the water that washes your clothes. You might as well get the most possible use out of it.
Other grey water options include washing up in a bowl and throwing the water out on the garden, but water containing strong detergents isn’t advised, so unless you use eco detergents that may not be the best thing to do. You can do something to your plumbing so that you can reuse shower and basin water for the garden. But in my view, this doesn’t come under ‘easy.’
This part of Robin and Margaret Marks’ garden is irrigated and fed by pipes leading from the household grey water and treated sewage system.
Two of the gardens I visited near Melbourne had sewage and grey water systems set up to seep out through the garden soil. The sewage is treated, so it doesn’t smell. It fertilises the garden as well as keeping it watered. But this requires some serious plumbing changes – it’s probably only viable if you are doing some fairly major renovations.
Australian garden broadcaster Stephen Ryan runs the water from the roof of his house down into large tanks. Any overflow tops up his garden ponds.
Rare plant expert and gardening broadcaster Stephen Ryan runs water from his guttering into tanks and has an overflow into his garden ponds.
Water saving garden hose
I find it useful to have a hose which switches off at the nozzle because you don’t have to walk back to the tap between jobs. So you’re less likely to leave the hose on overnight. Leaving a hose to run can be very expensive if you’re metered.
We use a Flopro hose, which comes on a cart with an adjustable nozzle. I was sent it for review two years ago, and I’ve found it good. It doesn’t kink as much as our previous hose did, and the adjustable nozzle is very useful.
An adjustable nozzle also means you can leave a hose running very slowly around the base of a plant. The water will really sink into the soil.
Watering the lawn
We visited Melbourne this year at the end of an exceptionally dry summer. And nobody waters their lawns. Lawns go brown in hot, dry weather. They bounce back when the rain comes.
This sculpture is on a lawn, but Melbourne has had a very dry summer….the lawn will bounce back.
The only time you need to water a lawn is in its first summer. I remember top garden designer Charlotte Rowe looking at my newly laid lawn and telling me ‘Alexandra, you have to water that every day, even if it rains.’ And I did. But never since.  One hour of a sprinkler on the lawn can use as much water as a family of four do in a day.
Watering other plants
Shrubs and perennials should survive, too, unless they’ve been recently planted. They definitely need watering in their first year. After that, you may decide to take a brisk attitude to plants that need cosseting. Once again, no sprinklers. Direct the water to the roots of the plant, leaving the rest of the soil dry.
Annual summer bedding, vegetables and pots will need regular watering.
Water first thing in the morning or in the evening. Some people say that evening watering in damp climates can lead to fungal diseases. But if you have a ‘damp climate’, you may not need to water.
Various tests have been run on whether watering in sunlight ‘scorches’ plants. The evidence is that it doesn’t – or you’d see far more wild plants looking ‘scorched.’ But the sun does evaporate the water, so it’s not ideal to water in the hot sun.
Water saving garden tips for pots
Plants in pots dry out more quickly than plants in the ground, so they need more watering.
The smaller the pot, the quicker it will dry out, although water retaining gels help. I was sent some Westland Water Retaining Gel to review. I found it effective in the slightly larger pots, but the smallest pots will always dry out quickly. You really do have to water them every day in the summer.
Grouping lots of small pots together helps stop some of the evaporation. And it makes it easier to water.
If you like small individual pots, then I’ve found that drought-resistant plants such as pelargoniums generally do best.
If you like having small pots around, then I’ve found that drought-resistant plants, such as pelargoniums or succulents, are best.
Mulch, mulch, mulch
Almost everything in the garden seems to come back to mulching. Add a layer of compost, bark chips, wood chips or even lawn clippings to your borders to help stop water evaporating. Don’t dig it in. You’ll suppress annual weed seeds plus the mulch will eventually decompose and feed the plants.
Last year I started protecting a couple of new plants – a rose and a silver birch – with a cardboard mulch. I laid cardboard flat on the earth around the plant, covering the approximate root area. Then I added compost on top to disguise the cardboard. I did a post about this as a way of weeding without chemicals, but it also helped the plants survive the drought.
Plants that survive drought well include sedum and I’ve found that Rosa glauca is resilient to most weather conditions.
If you’re buying compost, the RHS says that we should not be using peat-based composts. (And isn’t it a bit contradictory to save water while not saving peat?).
I’ve been sent some Westland New Horizon Peat-free compost to try. So far, I’ve found it excellent for sowing seeds. I also use my homemade compost for mulching, too.
And if you’re having work done…
If you’re doing any major work in the garden, you can build water-saving in. I would love to have an irrigation system but only if it had a programming mechanism. And I don’t want it fed directly from the garden tap.
We tried out an irrigation system a few years ago which was connected to our garden tap. But it meant we had to turn the tap on and off to get the irrigation working. It was also a nuisance to have to take it off the tap when we wanted to use the hose or watering cans.
And because you can’t see the water flowing with an irrigation system, I thought it might be too easy to leave it on. As we’re metered, that could be very expensive.
I have since been recommended this garden tap lever fitting that has two tap outlets. It means you could run the irrigation system and still use the second tap outlet for a hose or watering can. However, I haven’t tried it personally.
Do let me know of any easy water saving garden tips you have, in the comments below. Thank you!

How much should you pay for gardening upkeep? Basic garden upkeep is often charged by the hour. Some gardeners will check out fortnightly or monthly. This can be an expense effective way of keeping a garden under control if you require a green-fingered assisting hand. "Gardeners who charge as little as ₤ 10 per hour are usually either cowboys or brand-new to the industry. Gardeners who are undertaking a larger job will release a repaired price quote. In some cases, quotes will just stand for a limited duration. Inspect this with your potential gardener when the quote is provided. You might reasonably be expected to sign a contract for bigger jobs. Ask to see terms and conditions before signing. Disposal of garden waste can add unanticipated expense to a gardening job. Vines provide themselves well to this work. It is better to plant a seasonal vine, and so let it form an irreversible part of your landscape scheme. The Virginia creeper, wistaria, honeysuckle, a climbing rose, the clematis and trumpet vine are all most satisfactory. Now contribute to this old house a purple wistaria. Can you see the appeal of it? I shall not forget quickly a rather unsightly corner of my childhood home, where the dining-room and kitchen met. A tree that has taken years to grow can be damaged or harmed in minutes by a inexperienced or unqualified arborist. To make it possible for the trees on your house to remain as appealing and healthy as possible, cautious attention ought to be provided to their planting and care. Properly maintained trees include shade, structure and appeal to any garden, park or metropolitan site. Even more essential, through photosynthesis, trees take in co2; this procedure gets rid of and stores carbon while releasing oxygen, the gas crucial to sustain human life, into the air.
Either way if you have a plan of what you are doing and exactly what you desire to plant where, you will conserve yourself lots of back breaking hours digging and planting unnecessarily. Gardening Tip 3. Make a list of the products and tools you will need. After developing your garden design, list the tools and materials that are required to develop your work of art. You may need specialist devices like heavy earth moving equipment that needs to be employed and reserved beforehand or you may want to plant exotic plants that have to be bought and grown specially. You do not wish to get half method through your task only to discover you can not get a tool on hire for 2 weeks. When this happens it is very aggravating and can in some cases hold up the entire task. I have had many email correspondence with them because, albeit pretty standard reactions and although they have at least reimbursed me the cost of the returned plants they choose not to budge on reimbursing me with the return expense. I would not have paid any money for them it I had seen them on a deal bench at a regional garden centre! Even if a product is offered at a reduced rate does not give any company the right to palm off unsaleable/unhealthy/dying stock especially when they do not even look like the product advertised. Outright case of false marketing. This company plainly relies on customers not wishing to sustain extra costs to return unwanted plants and should not get away with it anymore! I have actually discovered my lesson and will never ever purchase from this business again.
They come in each sizes, rate range and designs to fulfill the choices of every property owner. Wood, metal, plastic or vinyl are the typical materials required for the building and construction. There could be a number of options like tailoring these garden structures at your benefit and requirement. Whenever you wish to have garden sheds, you'll find a great deal of things that you need to think about. One of these is to determine on how big do you require them to be whether you construct on your own or buy something which you can assemble in the yard. When you choose to develop a shed, you can pick the ideal shed strategies which you will need. In the occasion you purchase your sheds, you'll have the ability to have shed sets based upon your preferences and needs. Another thing to believe about when getting garden sheds will be the purpose.
The soil needs to be wet a minimum of 3 or 4 inches deep to guarantee the water is reaching the root zone. If you have dry spell resistant plants in your garden you will not have to water as often, but the concept of deep watering still uses. This is a charming time to see hanging baskets in full blossom displayed vibrantly in front of stores, bars and homes. It feels like a very English tradition. But they take some work. Inspect hanging baskets and container-grown plants every day throughout dry weather condition and about every 2nd day on moderate summertime days. Do not just check the surface but dig your finger an inch or more into the soil to be sure there is adequate moisture throughout the root area. Water hanging baskets completely each time, however beware not to over do it. Unwatered hanging baskets will quickly dry out, wilt and hang unfortunately rather of brilliantly and vibrantly.
For those who want to host celebrations, adding a Lazy Susan to the brand-new table is a fantastic alternative. It's one of the easiest ways to move food around with barely any effort. Besides looking at design and material, convenience is another important aspect to think about. In order for people to genuinely enjoy their space, the home furnishings need to be comfy. Individuals need to feel serene while sitting outdoors. Unpleasant seating is among the quickest methods to mess up the tranquil atmosphere. Never choose something just because it's trendy. Usually speaking, Garden Landscaping trees and fully grown shrubs (such as 6 foot rhododendrons with heavy branches), you will need to buy both loppers and pruners. For trees, you will likewise need a pole pruner. You might likewise wish to hire an expert arborist to look after your trees, however it's possible to prune it all on your own. The best ways to utilize Pruning Tools? Purchasing and choosing pruning tools might appear complex, but it's actually the many standard task once you know exactly what you're looking for.
An old clothes hamper makes an excellent strainer for cleaning your produce. The water will leave the basket through the holes in the sides if you pipe off your fruit and vegetables in the laundry basket. Make sure you plant strawberries in your garden for your kids, you wish to make certain you specifically plant everbearing strawberries also. A lot of children not https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/?search=Gardening Services just like to choose out their own fruit however they likewise enjoy to learn more about it too. Usage around 2 or three inches of natural, organic product as some mulch in each and every single flower bed. Mulch assists and discourages weeds maintain moisture while adding nutrients to your flower bed. By adding mulch, you can give your flower beds a finished look. Keep your tools handy to work more efficiently. Examples of excellent woods include cypress, locust, and cedar. Treated wood can leach chemicals into any soil it rests versus, so do not use it in a garden with vegetables. If you're utilizing dealt with lumber, line it with a barrier, or some plastic. An organic shade garden is an excellent choice for any newbie. These sorts of gardens are low upkeep. Due to the fact that they need less water, they conserve much time and work. Growth is continual, however weeds will be less of an issue. Discover what need to be offered them to do their jobs (copies of handouts, audio-visual devices). Increase advertising 2 months prior to training, especially if action has been slow. Nevertheless, it is much better to have a few volunteers operating at clearly defined jobs than too lots of volunteers with little to do. Inform candidates of their status in the program as applications arrive. Order handbooks for training from the Extension Publications Department.

Vegetable Feast: Sweet Potatoes, Walking Onions, and Water Timers
In his “Vegetable Feast” column, horticulturist Frank Hyman offers seasonal gardening advice paired with his own trademark wit.
Sweet Potatoes: Sweetheart of the Summer Garden
Both white potatoes and sweet potatoes are delicious, but sweet potatoes can be better for you: their orange flesh offers beta-carotene, fiber, and B vitamins, and they’re lower on the glycemic index. Some sweet potatoes have been bred to have white, yellow, or purple flesh. The young leaves are tender, tasty, and nutritious enough to eat like sautéed spinach all summer long.
Sweet potato transplants (called slips because, when they are about 8 inches long, these shoots “slip” right off the potatoes) show up at garden centers in late spring. They often come in a bundle of 50 with tiny, inadequate-looking roots or sometimes no roots at all. But at any stage, a sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is about the toughest plant in the vegetable garden, so don’t worry about the roots—they’ll do fine.
You can also grow your own slips by sprouting a sweet potato from last year’s harvest or even an organic sweet potato from the farmer’s market. (Conventional sweet potatoes are often sprayed with a chemical called BudNip to prevent them from sprouting.) Cut the potato in half lengthwise, lay it on a bed of moist sand, and put it on a sunny windowsill. In about three weeks, you’ll have slips sprouting from the sides of the potato.
Here is your chance to teach kids about cloning. A clone is any new plant with DNA that’s identical to its parent. Plants propagated by cuttings, divisions, or in this case, sprouts, are all clones. On the other hand, plants propagated from seeds get half their DNA from each of their two parents, as humans do.
With your slips collected and your bed freshly turned, drop the slips on the ground about 12 inches apart in the row, in rows that are also about 12 inches apart. Use a tool like a broom or rake handle turned upside down. From a standing position, use the tip of the handle to push the bottom end of the slip into the soft ground until only the top leaves are showing. A 2-by-2 stick will also work. This is a good use for worn-out tools: cut off the worn-out end and save the long handle to use as a garden stake or for poking sweet potato slips into the ground. As each slip is poked into place, use the tip of your toe to settle the soil around the root. When you’re done planting, give each slip a shot of water.
Giving children these tasks could be a good lesson in teamwork: one kid drops the plants on the ground, another pokes them with a stick (this will be a popular job), the next one settles the soil with their toe, and the last one pours some water on each plant. Adults also appreciate this technique since it requires no bending over.
Outside of long droughts or desert conditions, no summer irrigation is necessary for sweet potatoes—they are that tough. Sweet potatoes do like it hot, so northern gardeners may want to use black plastic mulch, which heats up the soil. But because they spread across the ground quickly, shading the soil, suppressing most weeds and outrunning the rest, some gardeners even forgo mulch. Sweet potatoes are also generally free of insects and diseases, making them a great cost-effective crop that won’t need babysitting all summer.
Harvest some or all of the potatoes any time after Labor Day. Cut the leafy vines to the ground first and feed them to the chickens or the compost bin.
Dig the potatoes with a shovel. A range of sizes will be found on the roots of every plant. If you have warm, dry, fall weather, leave the potatoes on the ground for a few days so the skins dry out enough to be stored indoors for several weeks or months. Ideally, save one or two to start slips next spring.
To cook them, pierce the skins with a fork and bake for 45 minutes at 400°F for a sweet, moist, nutritious side dish that really doesn’t need butter or spices.
Save Time and Water with a Water-Timer
Occasionally I see gardeners struggling to keep their gardens watered by hand. Most hoses might put out about 10 gallons per minute. For an urban gardener in an older part of town, corrosion in the water pipes may cut that rate in half.
To grow well in summer, a vegetable garden needs—very roughly—a gallon of water per square foot per week, if there’s no rain. So watering about 600 square feet of garden would take one to two hours of your time every week if done by hand. And there’s still the rest of the garden to tend to.
But there’s an alternative that I rely on: inexpensive timers mounted on the spigot allow the right amount of water to run through a soaker hose or sprinkler and then they shut off the water for you.
I know timers work because I set up all my garden clients with them. Since 99 percent of my clients aren’t gardeners, the timers let me create a simple push-button irrigation system that allows non-gardeners to keep new plants alive.
These timers work the same way an egg timer does in the kitchen. Turn the dial to a set amount of time and tick, tick, tick, it works its way through a countdown and turns off the water on schedule. They cost $10 to $15 and are available at most garden centers.
It’s this easy: 1) screw the timer onto the spigot, 2) screw the garden hose onto the bottom of the timer, and then 3) connect the garden hose to a soaker hose or sprinkler in the garden. Remove the timer in winter so ice won’t crack it open.
Then do as I suggest to my clients: turn on the timer on your way out of the house. You can be confident that the watering will stop while you’re away. You might leave the house with the nagging feeling you’ve left the oven on—I can’t help you there—but you won’t come home to find your yard a swamp.
When you do arrive home, move the garden hose to water another bed and set the timer again before you go in to make dinner. No standing around required.
Self-Starters: Egyptian Walking Onions
I try to save time in the garden, and what could save more time than for vegetables to replant themselves every year? All we would have to do is keep them mulched and gather the harvest. Am I just dreaming?
Most popular vegetables—tomatoes, broccoli, etc.—are annuals and only live for a few months before dying. That’s why we have to resurrect the vegetable garden each season. But a few vegetables are perennials, meaning they live year after year. You’re probably already familiar with perennial veggies like asparagus and rhubarb that come back every spring. Another perennial vegetable is Egyptian walking onion. These onions are delicious, drought hardy, and pest free, and they keep multiplying—on their own.
Walking onions (nobody really knows if they’re from Egypt) don’t set seed at all. In early summer, odd-looking clusters of four to eight bulblets erupt at the top of their 2-foot-tall, pillar-like green leaves. If you’re familiar with pearl onions, you’ve got a good idea of their size and range of color. Called topsets, these thumb-size bulbs get heavier until mid- or late summer, when their weight causes the leaves to arch to the ground. Left alone, the topsets will root where they land. That’s why they’re called walking onions (although their pace is more of a saunter).
Once set in, or on the ground, the rooted topsets grow into 2-inch-wide onions. They send up fresh leaves and grow new topsets the following summer, which then take another slow step on their perennial journey.
You can harvest walking onions at one or more stages:
1) Year-round, you can eat the greens and use as you would chives or spring onion greens.
2) From fall to spring, harvest some of the small, first-year onions from the ground as scallions. Any remaining bulbs will keep growing and multiplying.
3) In midsummer, harvest some of the full-size bulbs.
4) Also in midsummer, harvest the mature topsets. Though small, like pearl onions, they are super-easy to peel if you boil them for a minute or two, drain, dunk in an ice bath, cut the root end off, then squeeze ‘em till they pop out of their skins like a muscadine grape. (StartCooking.com/blog/202/How-to-Peel-Pearl-Onions)
Do leave some bulbs unharvested in a dedicated bed so they can save you time by creating next season’s crop. Or harvest and poke bulblets about a finger-joint-deep into moderately fertile, prepared soil to help them kick off their promenade.

My cats eventually discovered the realm of "on top of the entertainment center" and I had to take my favorite plant to work so I could enjoy it at least sometimes. I don't know what else to do either. Little [emailprotected]@rds. Gotta love 'em though oh, and my cat doesn't pay any attention to red pepper at all. What Should I Do About My Ex-Fiance? Okay So, This Is A Long Story But My Ex-Fiance And I Met In May And While We Were Dating My Dad Didn'T Like Him Because The Second Time We Hung Out He Never Drove Me Home...I Took The Bus And My Dad Thought That Was Very Irresponsible Of Him And Not What He Should Have Done. I Agree With Him But There Was Something About Him From The Moment We Met That He Was Something Special About Him. Through The Whole Time Of Us Being Together I Had My Dad Not Liking That I Was With Him And Sometimes He Would Forbid Me To See Him But I Continued To See Him And Be With Him Because I Truly Felt Like We Were Forever. He Was My Strength, My Rock, The Only Person Who Knew My Complete Life Story, The First And Last Thing I Would Think About; My Other Half. So We Talked About It A Lot And We Decided That After Only 2 Months Into Our Relationship That We Would Get Engaged. He Proposed To Me And That Was..Till This Day...The Happiest Day Of My Life. I Felt Like My Life Was Complete And I Have Found The Person I Wasnt To Be With Forever And Have Children With Etc. So I Went To A Cottage With My Family And We Wrote Letters To Each Other Everyday. Well His Said Fiance And How We Would Have Sex Without Protection (Which Was A Dumb Idea) And When I Came Home I Put It In A Drawer. My Dad Searched Through My Room And He Found The Notes That My Fiance Wrote Me And Had Some Sort Of Intervention With My Best Girl Friend At The Time, My Dad, And His Girlfriend And They Said That I Was Never To See Him Again And That He Was Just Using Me For Money And To Get Me Pregnant; Which Was Completely Untrue. Out Of Being Completely Hurt And Helpless I Told My Ex-Fiance At That Point To Not Talk To Me Again Because It Was Too Hard On Me And My Dad Was Watching My Phone, Facebook, And Email And I Didn'T Want My Dad To Verbally Abuse My Ex More Than He Already Had. About A Week Later Or So We Did End Up Getting Back Together Secretly. I Mentioned This To My Dad And I Wanted Him To Support Me. He Didn'T And He Sent An Extremely Rude Text Message To My Ex Basically Saying Leave Her Alone Or I Will Come After You. This Was The Last Straw For Me And So I Decided I Would Move Out And I Asked My Ex (Now Boyfriend Again) To Support Me In This And Have My Back. He Didn'T Because He Was Scared Of My Dad Coming After Him And I Instead Went To My Friends House To Stay. He Would Text Me Saying That He Missed Me And That He Wanted To Show Me That He Could Be The Guy That I Deserve So I Decided To Give Him A Second Chance, Thinking It Was Easier Because My Dad Wasn'T In The Picture Anymore. However, At This Point I Was Really Guarded From Him Not Being There For Me And So I Said That We Should Take Things Slow. This Was Really Hard Because I Loved Him So Much And For Me To Get To The Point Where I Wanted To Marry Him Created So Much Love For Him Inside Of Me That I Didn'T Believe That I Could Take It Slow, I Wanted It To Go Back To The Way It Was When We Were Deeply In Love. We Went Back And Forth On This Issue And It Ended Up Creating A Conflict. In The End He Felt That I Was Questioning My Feelings For Him And Putting Him On A Pedistal To Be Perfect When I Wasn'T. I Was Just Making Sure That He Was There For Him And I Would Be There For Him And I Questioned Myself I Guess For Continuing This Relationship Not Knowing What It Would Hold. I Have Always Had A Plan In My Life And For The Most Part Knew What Would Happen And So This Creating Stressful Feelings For Me. There Is Another Part To This Story Though. His Girlfriend Died 3 Years Ago In A Freak Accident And They Had Dated For 2 Years And They Were Going To Get Married (They Weren'T Engaged But They Talked About It). He Never Knew This But, During Our Whole Relationship I Felt Like I Would Never Be Able To Live Up To Her Because She Was Missed By So Many People Close To Him And His Family Loved Her Like Their Own. I Know That His Family Loved Me Too But I Never Felt Good Enough For Him. So After He Ended It With Me, He Made A Video For His Girlfriend That Passed And It Was Beautiful And Sentimental But It Was A Song That He Said Reminded Him Of Me When We Weren'T Together And That He Would Never Get Over Me. Seeing That Video Broke My Heart And I Lost It And It Made Me Question Everything About Our Relationship And If What We Had Was Love And If I Even Meant Anything To Him. It Really Messed Me Up And I Still Struggle With It Every Day. I Replay How We Ended And What He Said To Me In My Mind Every Single Day And I Don'T Think I Will Ever Forgive Myself For Losing Someone That Would Do Anything For Me And Loved Me With Everything He Had And More. In Saying This Story, What I'M Asking Is What Should I Do? Should I Hold Out For Him? Should I Forget About Him? Should I Just Keep Living? Should I Talk To A Therapist? Should I Communicate With Him Again? What Should I Do?? I Really Need Help.
Lots of times, guys want to get back together. Some become aggressive about it. There are many ways to spend time, and pining after a past relation is not a good one. What I would do is kind of like a diet. In my case, changing phone number, moving, blocking his email, buying a new car, getting away. There is no just a little chocolate or potato chips. It is all in or all out. That is how I like it for me. How you prefer would depend on your age, your experience, your access to meeting new people, your social level, your monetary situation, and your mental status. He sounds like someone with old baggage from my point of view, and I would not be interested in fixing any of that. Nor, do I like to try to live up to some idealized past view I perceive someone might have. If you are still living at home, and still having your private documents read by parents, then, you are not ready to get married. Get a job or go back to school for some certification. Get your own place and meet new people. That includes new men. As far as a therapist, I don't think you will like it. The help you need is to complete yourself, not that idealized, "You complete me." That, being from a movie, Jerry McGuire. It isn't really like that.
Horse Heaves, Please Help? My Horse Has Heaves. He'S Had Them Ever Since He Came Back From Staying In A Dusty Stall (Like 5+ Years Ago) He'S On Medication That Helps But The Vet Says He Cant Be On It Much Longer. I Have A Reaction To His Pine Shavings (My Lungs Get Tight And It'S Hard To Breath) I'M Thinking He Has The Same Problem And Thats Why He'S Not Getting Better. We Put Down Straw As Bedding And He Hasnt Lied Down Yet. He Just Stands There And Eats It!!! What Would Be A Good Bedding For Him To Help With His Lungs But Still Be Comfortable? How Well Do Those Pine Pellets Work? Are They Harmful If He Eats Them? Are They Dusty? Please Help! Thanks
u could try putting him in a pasture there he can lay where he wants and he is in open air so it wont be as dusty give him a really airy stall if he cant be outside prefribley with a window to out side and a half door so that the air can go straight throw the stall to circulate fresh air in and bad air out. ok if he can go in and out as he pleases and likes to sleep in his stall get a rubber mat cause it is really easy to clean and its a waste of straw and shavings and money if he aint in his stall all day so just use a rubber mat it dont have to be replaced every day or other day like straw and shavings all u have to do i hose it down it cuts ur bedding time in half and there is no dust good luck hope ur horse gets a lil better and not all rubber mats have latex in them they have sum special made mats but if u cant find one try a hard wood floor and use i'd say hay or stay with straw its okay that its eatten it wont hurt him any and the pellets should be dust free but i think u can soak them i'm not sure if he eats hay soak that and dry it before u give it to him
What Time Of Year Are You Supposed To Put Out Pine Straw? I Don't Want To Smother My Perennials.? We Just Purchased Our First House- There Are Several Landscaped Areas That Have Pinestraw Around The Plants. It Is Starting To Look A Little Shabby- What Is The Best Time Of Year To Lay Out New Pine Straw? Spring Or Fall? I Live In Ga And Have Lots Of Perennials That Either Still Green Or Will Be Back In The Spring.
I am not familiar with the custom of using pine straw as mulch, Here in the northeast we use wood mulch. When you mulch, it is for three reasons: keeps moisture in for the plant, keeps weeds down, and aesthetics. You can mulch at any time. Just don't cover the crowns of the plants.
How Much Should I Charge For My Work? I Work In People'S Yards And Gardens. I'Ve Always Charged $12 For Any Work I Do, Be It Lawn Mowing, Weeding, Pruning, Transplanting, Mulching, Leaf Raking, Etc. But I'M Wondering If I Can Fairly Ask For More And Expect People To Still Be Interested. So, If You Are A Middle-Class Home Owner Who Might Like To Have Someone Help With Yard Or Garden Work, Please Let Me Know The Highest Price You Think You'D Be Willing To Pay. It Will Help Me A Lot. Thanks!
You work way too cheap! The people my father hired to do all of that charged $60.00 a visit and they came every two weeks. I work for a hardware store/garden center and see alot of yard maintenece people come in to buy pine straw, weedeater line, gardening merchandise, etc.. and they charge about that amount. To cut back hedges only that I can not handle-I get charged $50.00 per 50 foot row. You have to think of your time, your experience, your gas, and the up keep on your tools.
