I do think ouat understands that adulthood fundamentally is responsibility for those younger or weaker or less powerful than you, it understands that staying and saving people is actually the grown up thing to do, which is another reason why the Neverland arc is so good because it was a perfect idea to pitt Emma against the boy who never grew up and see how she had to.
