Jokes | Ethan x Reader (Dangerous Fellows)
Summary: You and Ethan go on patrol together. You, being you, try to knock down Ethan's walls during these opportunities together. He's loosening up to you a lot more, and much more than you thought.
It’s patrol night and this time, it’s yours and Ethan’s turn to take watch. Starting from the school, you do your usual routine with each other.
Or rather, your own routine: making light and fun conversations with Ethan until he loosens up. He’s a bit of a stiff guy, you’ve come to know, but you like to think to yourself that it’s just a part of his charm. His stoic-ness makes him more… cute.
As the two of you walk towards the exit of the school to start the second half of patrol around the school, you continue your routine.
“You play the batter, if I remember correctly?” You start off as you exit the first floor of the school, ascending upwards, eyes looking around cautiously with your flashlight.
“I was a pitcher,” he corrects. Ethan meets you at the second floor and stares out onto the hallway. Nothing’s there so the two of you resort back to your casual demeanor.
“Pitcher…”
“I was the one that sets up the game, so to say. When it’s the opposing team’s turn to score points, I throw the ball and the batter hits.”
“Maybe we can all play a game together!” You throw out, looking excited. Ethan hears your voice brighten at the idea, giving a smile that you couldn't see from behind you. The two of you continue to move, checking in classrooms here and there.
“[ ], I doubt we can find enough equipment around the school. Most of it is ransacked..."
You take a look around once more, holding onto your metal pipe a bit tighter. Ethan does the same with his bat.
"I mean, we don't have to have baseball bats and such. Just makeshift things. Think of it as baseball on a budget. It'll be fun, and count it as a team building exercise."
You two reach a break area for the students who used to learn here. Since there isn't an obstacle in sight that could hide any stragglers, he becomes more relaxed. He laughs softly at how you try to sell your idea of 'budgeted baseball' to him.
"Take your powerpoint to Lawrence and see what he thinks of it."
"I'm pitching the idea to you first."
"Please, don't do that," Ethan says, but you hear the smile in his voice.
Is it you, or is he joking with you a lot more on this patrol? This side of him feels new and you feel your cheeks growing hot at the realization.
The two of you continue to go around the school, confirming that there's nothing going on. You continue your pitch on how to persuade the others to join in for the game, and he listens, adding a few remarks here and there.
The smile on your face as you talk about playing baseball with the others makes Ethan feel… warm. He didn’t even realize that he started looking at you more than the dreary classrooms. You're just hard to look away when you're being as bright as you are, he thinks.

The two of you end your route with a chat on the rooftop of the school. It’s becoming a regular in your routine whenever the two of you do patrols. These moments are something you look forward to most, mostly because it’s the sense of normalcy a hangout has that Ethan and you both crave when the world is crumbling into pieces before your eyes.
“The guys found some cookies the other day,” you begin, sitting down on the floor and setting down the lantern behind the two of you, “They shared some with us, but how come you didn’t take any? Packaged cookies are quite a treat in this day and age.”
“Sweets aren’t for me,” Ethan answers, short and sweet, “but I’m glad you guys are getting along.”
“Of course, I naturally want to get along with them! Our survival depends on each other, and I care about them. It’s networking,” you joke.
The bluntness of your words makes him laugh a bit. He adds his own opinion about the group. “Even in a world so chaotic and indifferent to us, I’m just glad that we are still all together.”
“Yeah…” you hesitate to make your move. “I do like it that we are together,” you point out. The hint in your voice is noticed by Ethan. You look at him, and he stares at you right back.
He coughs, “Um.. yes, together,” he says quickly, putting his hand on the back of his neck. In the stillness of night, though you don’t see much of his face from the lantern the two of you brought, you can imagine the red on his face as he breaks his stare to focus on the night sky.
“Um.. we should go back. Wouldn’t want to keep the others waiting,” he starts, after a comfortable silence passes between you two. He stands up, holding out a hand for you to grab. Ethan pulls you up, and the warmth of his hands makes you self conscious about how cold yours would feel for him. But the thought quickly disperses when you feel a tight grasp on your hand.
You look up to him, his other hand, still on the back of his neck.
“Let’s just.. go back like this until we arrive at the classrooms, if you don’t mind,” Ethan says, looking shy as ever.
You smile warmly, tightening your hand over his. “I’m glad to.”
