Controlled Trial Sh Remote Automation  ows Cannabis Reduces Some Symptoms of MS

A newly published research study shows the benefits of smoking cannabis for spasticity in multiple sclerosis. Using 30 adult patients with multiple sclerosis, the researchers found that smoked cannabis was superior to a placebo in reducing symptoms and pain in patients with treatment-resistant spasticity, or excessive muscle contractions.
A clinical study of 30 adult patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine has shown that smoked cannabis may be an effective treatment for spasticity – a common and disabling symptom of this neurological disease.
The placebo-controlled trial al wireless m2m  so resulted in reduced perception of pain, although participants also reported short-term, adverse cognitive effects and increased fatigue. The study will be published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal on May 14.
Principal investigator Jody Corey-Bloom, MD, PhD, professor of neurosciences and director of the Multiple Sclerosis Center at UC San Diego, and colleagues randomly assigned participants to either the intervention group (which smoked cannabis once daily for three days) or the control group (which smoked identical placebo cigarettes, also once a day for three days). After an 11-day interval, the participants crossed over to the other group.
“We found that smoked cannabis was superior to placebo in reducing symptoms and pain in patients with treatment-resistant spasticity, or excessive muscle contractions,” said Corey-Bloom.
Earlier reports suggested that the active compounds of medical marijuana were potentially effective in treating neurologic conditions, but most studies focused on orally administered cannabinoids. There were also anecdotal reports of MS patients that endorsed smoking marijuana to relieve symptoms of spasticity.
However, this trial used a more objective measurement, a modified Ashworth scale which graded the intensity of muscle tone by measuring such things as resistance in range of motion and rigidity. The secondary outcome, pain, was measured using a visual analogue scale. The researchers also looked at physical performance (using a timed walk) and cognitive function and – at the end of each visit – asked patients to assess their feeling of “highness.”
Although generally well tolerated, smoking cannabis did have mild effects on attention and concentration. The researchers noted that larger, long-terms studies are needed to confirm their findings and determine whether lower doses can result in beneficial effects with less cognitive impact.
The current study is the fifth clinical test of the possible efficacy of cannabis for clinical use reported by the University of California Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research (CMCR). Four other human studies on control of cellular router  neuropathic pain also reported positive results.

Carbonemys roamed the Earth around the same time as the 40-foot Titanoboa, about 60 million years ago, during the late Paleocene, in the region that i Smart Vending  s now northern Colombia. In that era, reptiles were the dominant creatures on Earth.
Carbonemys cofrinii was big by modern-day standards, and a team of paleontologists, led by Edwin Cadena and Daniel Ksepka, recently published Vending Telemetry   their discovery in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontologyindustrial l2tp cellular router about finding the creature’s skull. C. cofrinii was the size of a small car, and its skull was about 10 inches long. The fossilized carapace found nearby measures 5’7″ in length.
While this doesn’t make C. cofrinii the biggest turtle of all, it was still large enough to prey upon other inhabitants of the Paleocene swamp. It might have been an enormous ambush predator, feasting on small crocodilians and other smaller animals.
It’s hoped that future analysis will allow paleontologists to understand the turtle’s natural history. It’s also somewhat perplexing that there were so many large reptiles in the same area. One hypothesis entails that the growth of theses reptiles is due to the warmer climate of the region, making them balloon to cope with the hothouse world. Then again, the largest turtles, panpelomedusidae, are present in the fossil record during a much cooler period.
There might be some yet unknown ecological influences. The creature was most probably an omnivore, feasting on anything from mollusks to crocodilians to sate itself.

HiSilicon: What you need to know about Huawei’s chip design unit Huawei is fast becoming a household smartphone brand. There’s even a decent chance you’re reading this on one of its phones, seeing as the company is now the world’s third largest phone manufacturer. If you’re using a Huawei phone, you might also be running all your apps on a Kirin system-on-a-chip (SoC) developed by HiSilicon, the Huawei-owned fabless semiconductor company based out of Shenzhen, China. Just like major rivals Apple and Samsung, Huawei designs its own processors. Doing so gives the company more control over how hardware and software interact with each other, resulting in products that punch above their weight, specification wise. In that sense, HiSilicon has become an indispensable part of Huawei’s mobile success. The range of HiSilicon processors has expanded over the years, covering not just flagship products, but the mid range too. Here’s everything you’ll ever want to know about HiSilicon, Huawei’s chip designing company. A quick history of HiSilicon Huawei is a veteran in the telecommunications business. The company was founded in 1987 by former People’s Liberation Army engineer Ren Zhengfei, which has weighed heavily on the U.S. government’s attitude towards the company — historically and even recently. Huawei established its handset division in 2003, and shipped its first phone, the C300, in 2004. In 2009, the Huawei U8820, known as the T-Mobile Pulse, was the company’s first Android phone. By 2012 Huawei launched its first 4G smartphone, the Ascend P1. Before smartphones, Huawei provided telecommunication networking equipment to customers around the world, which remains a core part of its business today. In 2011, Richard Yu, current Huawei CEO, decided that HiSilicon should build in-house SoCs to differentiate its smartphones. HiSilicon was founded in 2004 to design various integrated circuits and microprocessors for its range of consumer and industry electronics, including router chips and modems for its networking equipment. It wasn’t until Richard Yu became the head of Huawei in 2011 — a position he retains to this day — that the company started looking at SoC design for phones. The rationale was simple; custom chips would allow Huawei to differentiate itself from other Chinese manufacturers. The first notable Kirin mobile chip was the K3 series in 2012, but Huawei continued to use chips from other silicon companies in most of its smartphones at the time. It wasn’t until 2014 that today’s Kirin brand of mobile chips appeared. The Kirin 910 powered the company’s Huawei P6 S, MediaPad, and Ascend P7. Unlike other designers, HiSilicon doesn’t create customized CPU designs based on the Arm architecture. Instead, the company opts for off-the-shelf parts from Arm — such as the Cortex-A73 CPU and Mali GPUs — to integrate into its solutions alongside other in-house developments, including modems and image signal processors. Huawei also doesn’t sell HiSilicon smartphone chips to third parties. It only uses them inside its own smartphones. Despite this, the chips are still seen as serious competition by the other big players in the market. The HiSilicon-Qualcomm rivalry Speaking in a recent interview with The Information, a HiSilicon manager stated the company viewed Qualcomm as its “No. 1 competitor.” However this rivalry isn’t anything particularly new, the two have gradually shifted from a friendly business partnership to a frosty competitive relationship. Huawei was a major purchaser of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors and continues to use its chips in some of its more cost-effective Honor smartphones. The issue for Qualcomm is that Huawei has surged to third place in the global smartphone market at the same time as it’s been increasingly using its own HiSilicon chips. Not only has Qualcomm lost a major partner, but Huawei’s growth has been squeezing out other brands that use Snapdragon processors. Up next 5G is a golden opportunity for Chinese OEMs 5G mobile networks are going to open up new experiences and possibilities for the Internet of Things (IoT), media businesses, and consumers. It also represents a major opportunity for infrastructure developers, researchers, and manufacturers. China … The situation was just as difficult shortly after HiSilicon announced its first mobile processors. Despite Huawei still being a customer, Qualcomm began heavily redacting product information, concerned Huawei may share information with HiSilicon. The company’s concerns perhaps weren’t unfounded, as Huawei employees have noted that working on the Nexus 6P with Google taught them a lot about hardware and software optimization. Huawei and Qualcomm are in closer competition than ever as they race for 5G and IoT related patents. Outside of SoCs, the two giants also now battle it out for patents related to IoT and other emerging connected technologies, particularly those involving 5G. Qualcomm has been the dominant holder of patents for the CDMA, 3G, and 4G industry standards, which, along with integrated modems in its chipsets, quickly thrust Snapdragon processors to the top of the Android ecosystem. This position could be threatened with the rollout of 5G, as Huawei is bulking up on patents for both consumer and industry 5G technologies, putting the two on a collision course. Qualcomm is still the bigger player. Across all market segments, it clocked in $22.3 billion last year, well ahead of HiSilicon’s $5.6 billion. But remember, Qualcomm sells to everyone, but only Huawei uses HiSilicon chipsets. HiSilicon Kirin SoC line-up HiSilicon’s latest flagship SoC is the Kirin 970. It’s in a number of Huawei’s high-end smartphones, including the Mate 10, P20 Pro, and the inexpensive Honor View 10. As we have come to expect from a chip powering expensive top-tier models, there’s plenty of high-performance components packed inside. An octa-core Cortex-A73 and A53 configuration paired with a Mali-G72 MP12 graphics unit make this HiSilicon’s most powerful chip to date. We’ve clocked it as a highly competitive product. The company has also improved its in-house image and video processing units to support high-end features, and a top-notch modem package makes the most of the world’s fastest LTE networks. One of its most notable features is the inclusion of a Neural Processing Unit (NPU). HiSilicon’s Kirin 970 joins Qualcomm and Apple in including dedicated hardware to speed up machine learning tasks, which range from speech recognition to image processing. Huawei’s quick move to bring this technology to the mid-tier Honor View 10 suggests the company wants to quickly incorporate machine learning advantages across its entire range of smartphones. Some new AI features in the P20 Pro are also due to be back-ported to the Mate 10 Pro. Both of these ranges continue to be announced in ascending order, making it easy to keep track of the latest and greatest. So far we haven’t seen a high-end chip boasting Arm’s latest DynamIQ technology and Cortex-A75 and A55 CPU cores, though HiSilicon quickly leaped on its latest GPU technology. The move to this new technology will require a bigger SoC revision than previous updates, so we may see an announcement along these lines later in 2018. Australia Stops Sea Shepherd Fro cellular router  m Using Drones

Back in December, Sea Shepherd was using drones to track the Japanese whaling fleet, giving them an edge in stopping illegal whaling, but now the Australian Antarctic Division has told the group that the drones must have an urgent environmental impact assessment if they are to be used in Antarctic Treaty waters.
This decision doesn’t seem to make any sense since no one outside of the Sea Shepherd organization is trying to stop whaling, which makes a huge impact on the environment. This sentiment is echoed by Sea Shepherd’s leader, Paul Watson.
“I find it interesting that they can tell us we can’t use drones in the Southern Ocean, but Japan can kill whales in the same waters,” he said. “I think Tokyo has made another complaint to Australia.”
Sea Shepherd h 4g router ad reportedly been seeing some success with the limited use of drones they have had so far. The drones helped them to track do remote diagnostics  wn and photograph hunters participating in Japan’s annual Antarctic whale hunt. Sea Shepherd com industrial IoT gateway pleted an environmental assessment before leaving an Australian port last month, but according to an Australian Antarctic Division manager, the drones were not included.

Astronomers Hun industrial m2m  t Molecules in the Search for New Planets

Each exoplanet revolves around a star, like the Earth around the Sun. This is why it is generally impossible to obtain images of an exoplanet, so dazzling is the light of its star. However, a team of astronomers, led by a researcher from the University of Geneva (UNIGE) and member of NCCR PlanetS, had the idea of detecting certain molecules that are present in the planet’s atmosphere in order to make it visible, provided that these same molecules are absent from its star. Thanks to this innovative technique, the device is only sensitive to the selected molecules, making the star invisible and allowing the astronomers to observe the planet directly. The results appear in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.
Until now, astronomers could only very rarely directly observe the exoplanets they discovered, as they are masked by the enormous luminous intensity of their stars. Only a few planets located very far from their host stars could be distinguished on a picture, in particular thanks to the SPHERE instrument installed on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile, and similar instruments elsewhere. Jens Hoeijmakers, researcher at the Astronomy Department of the Observatory of the Faculty of Science of the UNIGE and member of NCCR PlanetS, wondered if it would be possible to trace the molecular composition of the planets. “By focusing on molecules present only on the studied exoplanet that are absent from its host star, our technique would effectively “erase” the star,leaving only the exoplanet,” he explains.
Erasing the star thanks to molecular spectra
To test this new technique, Jens Hoeijmakers and an international team of astronomers used archival images taken by the SINFONI instrument of the star beta pictoris, which is known to be orbited by a giant planet, beta pictoris b. Each pixel in these  industrial router  images contains the spectrum of light received by that pixel. The astronomers then compared the spectrum contained in the pixel with a spectrum corresponding to a given molecule, for example water vapour, to see if there is a correlation. If there is a correlation, it means that the molecule is present in the atmosphere of the planet.
By applying this technique to beta pictoris b, Jens Hoeijmakers notices that the planet becomes perfectly visible when he looks for water (H2O) or carbon monoxide (CO). However, when he applies his technique to methane (CH4) and ammonia (NH3), the planet remains invisible, suggesting the absence of these molecules in the atmosphere of beta pictoris b.
Molecules, new planetary thermometer
The host star beta pictoris remains invisible in all four situations. Indeed, this star is extremely hot and at this high temperature, these four molecules are destroyed. “This is why this technique allows us not only to detect elements on the surface of the planet, but also to sense the temperature which reigns there”, explains the astronomer of the UNIGE. The fact that astronomers cannot find beta pictoris b using the spectra of methane and ammonia is therefore consistent with a temperature estimated at 1700 degrees for thi industrial IoT gateways planet, which is too high for these molecules to exist.
“This technique is only in its infancy”, enthuses Jens Hoeijmakers. “It should change the way planets and their atmospheres are characterized. We are very excited to see what it will give on future spectrographs like ERIS on the Very Large Telescope in Chile or HARMONI on the Extremely Large Telescope which will be inaugurated in 2025, also in Chile,” he concludes.

Scientists Develop a Fluorescent Caffein InHandGo  e Detector and Detection Kit

Fully automated microdfluidics device using lab-on-a-disc technology to extract and measure caffeine.
Scientists have developed a fluorescent caffeine detector and a detection kit that lights up like a traffic light when caffeine is present in various drinks and solutions. Named Caffeine Orange, the detector exhibits a 250-fold fluorescence enhancement upon caffeine activation and high selectivity responding to caffeine analogs that have similar chemical structures.
A team of researchers led by Prof. Young-Tae Chang from National University of Singapore and Prof. Yoon-Kyoung Cho from Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), Korea, developed a fluorescent caffeine detector and a detection kit.
The research work was published in Scientific Reports, in the article “Make Caffeine Visible: A Fluorescent Caffeine “Traffic Light” Detector.”
Caffeine drinks are ubiquitous and it would be unimaginable for many of us to go a day without caffeine. But certainly one begins to worry about how much caffeine one consumes every day.
Here is a convenient way to see how much caffeine is in your drink. The novel caffeine sensor, nam Industrial 3G Router  ed Caffeine Orange can be used for handy visualization of the amount of caffeine in your coffee  PLC remote accessor energy drinks.
With the non-toxic caffeine detection kit using Caffeine Orange, naked-eye sensing for various caffeine concentrations is possible based on color changes upon irradiation with the detection kit, and emitting a light to your drink with a green laser pointer.
Solutions with high caffeine concentrations turn red while solutions with moderate and low caffeine concentrations turn yellow and green, respectively when the drink is irradiated with a laser pointer.
The novel fluorescent caffeine detector, called Caffeine Orange was developed by the team led by Prof. Chang from National University of Singapore. To fully utilize traffic–light caffeine sensor, they need to extract caffeine from solutions. An automated system by incorporating microfluidics technique developed by the UNIST research team, lab-on-a disc, was applied to extract and to measure caffeine.
“Applying lab-on-a-disc technology to real life application with the novel caffeine sensor is very meaningful,” said Prof. Cho. “We will continue to develop new sensors applicable to various materials utilizing lab-on-a-chip technology.”
Beverages containing caffeine, such as coffee, tea, soft drinks, and energy drinks, enjoy great popularity around the world while various studies have raised both positive and negative health related concerns.
But it is c cellular  lear that caffeine overdose can lead to caffeine intoxication, with symptoms such as anxiety, irregular heartbeat, and insomnia. In extreme cases, a large overdose can lead to hallucinations, depression, or even death.
“You can use this caffeine detection kit as a ‘traffic-light caffeine amount designator’,” said Prof. Chang. “The reddish orange color indicates a stop sign for people who cannot uptake caffeine, while yellow and green indicate a warning signal and safe zone respectively.”
In addition, due to its abundant existence in domestic wastage, caffeine was found to be an important indicator of natural water system pollution by domestic drain.
The novel detector, Caffeine Orange, exhibits a 250-fold fluorescence enhancement upon caffeine activation and high selectivity responding to caffeine analogs that have similar chemical structures.
The caffeine sensor and detection kit not only to enhance product safety during extensive consumption of caffeine, but also serve as a practical path of uniting science with real life.
