A Celebration of Music, Poetry and Prose
A Tribute to Langston Hughes Celebration at City Winery
Sunday evening, I headed to City Winery for an incredible celebration of music, poetry and prose in honor of Langston Hughes. It was the perfect start to Black History Month.  This celebration, now in its third year featured some of the most talented singers, musicians, poets and artist who paid tribute to one of my favorite writers.  It was also a moving tribute in honor of Attorney Randy Crumpton who was known for linking people in law, entertainment and politics.  The Langston Hughes celebration was his idea and the community chose to honor him after his death in January 2019.  Poignant moments of the life of Randy Crumpton were also celebrated in a moving slideshow that highlighted his impact in his community and those around him.
In an evening dedicated to celebrating culture and community, artists recited the poetry of Langston Hughes and sang songs rooted in our history and culture. The artists for the evening included Terisa Griffith, Maggie Brown, Brittany Nack, Gifted Keys, Malcom London, Janice Fields, LaDonna Tittle, Lynne Jordan, Jerome Kelly and Hailey Love and Russell Hornsby. Each vocalist brought the house down with incredible vocals that moved the crowd to their feet at moments and at other moments to tears at the sheer power and poignant lyrics.   Each poetic lyricist recited the words to some of Langston Hughes most famous works.  I found it especially inspiring to see young people from Whitney Young HS and Gwendolyn Brooks HS recite Langston Hughes’ poetry along with their original poetic works. To see young people who captured the beauty and essence of modern day poetry gave me hope for the future.  Regina Taylor and Musical Director, Terisa Griffin did an outstanding job of producing this event.
Black history month is a time when we reflect on our community, culture and our future and the birthday celebration to Langston Hughes was the perfect kickoff to a month dedicated to celebrating our roots and our community.
Until next time,
Black Widow
