That's a wrap on our holiday weekend. We were back to our regularly scheduled program today of maintaining the farm and working on 4-H. This weekend I'm starting a feature called TGI-RTF, where we highlight a local RTF installation. Everytime we have guests over, they're in disbelief that we've never applied a single application of fertilizer, herbicide, fungicide, or insecticide. When we were putting in our own lawn three years ago, there was never a question as to which variety of grass we would choose. I was at a local garden store this week and overheard a customer asking for advice on maintaining his lawn. The associate explained to him, in Idaho we have what are known as cool season grasses, options that will survive our cold winters. He then said, cool season grasses don't tolerate our hot summers, the customer should raise the mowing deck to it's highest position to allow shade for the roots, and went on to sell him a series of products. This is sound advice, but not entirely true. Our RTF Sod actually thrives here in summer and develops a deep, dark green when the temperatures reach the higher registers. As the bluegrass begins to see its roots receding, the blades fading and wilting, and the results of inevitable billbug damage, the RTF is just turning on with none of these issues. We have tried other tall fescues, but there is only one Rhizomateous Tall Fescue on the market and it truly outshines all competition for our conditions here in the Treasure Valley. In honor of the first day of Summer, I was going to snap a picture of at home, but decided to drive past an installation that was done a couple of years ago. We had a water slide/bounce house on our lawn for the entire weekend. Part of this damage is a mud hole, the other is burning from being smothered in 90 degree temperatures. Guess who's not worried? The homeowners with the RTF Sod, that's who!
