La única mujer que ha conseguido puntaje en la Fórmula 1 fue la italiana Lella Lombardi. Nacida en 1941 en Frugolo, un pueblo piamontés, Maria Grazia Lombardi creció jugando balonmano. En un partido de este deporte, la pelota rompió su nariz y quien la llevó a la clínica lo hizo en un auto Alfa Romeo. La velocidad del vehículo enamoró a Lella y decidió que eso quería ser, piloto profesional. Así comenzó una relación con la velocidad y la adrenalina, primero como chofer de camiones donde repartía los pedidos de la carnicería de su padre, y luego como copiloto de rallies. En un ambiente netamente masculino, las miradas condescendientes de sus compañeros la hicieron tomar una actitud radical: Lella Lombardi se cortó el pelo, adquirió una actitud dura y se propuso llegar a lo más alto del automovilismo. El primer campeonato de alto perfil que ganó fue el Ford México Championship de la F5000, una carrera con un solo piloto que tuvo varias versiones alrededor del mundo entre 1968 y 1982, y que funcionaba como una antesala a la Fómula 1, la competición más popular y prestigiosa hasta hoy. En 1974 debutó en los Grandes Premios, y competiría en 17 de estos con los años. Su estilo audaz y agresivo atrajo la atención del fundador de Lavazza, el conde Guggi Zanon, amante de los autos y quien ayudó a Lombardi a competir la temporada casi completa de la Fórmula 1 con un monoplaza March 751 con motores Cosworth V8.
