The 26 things to know about National Signing Day 2017
Good morning! This is The Read Option, your daily college football newsletter. Sign up to get it in your inbox!
1. Nick Saban’s Alabama had the highest-scoring class. For the seventh year in a row. The last No. 1 class by someone other than Bama: 2010 Florida’s. That was also the last one to outscore this year’s Bama group on the 247Sports Composite, meaning the Tide just brought in their highest-scoring class ever. The class is so swelling with talent, a four-star who announced on Signing Day is among the players accepting a deferred scholarship.
2. However, there’s an argument that Ohio State’s class is just as good. It’s eight players smaller, but has a slightly higher average Composite score per player. Bama’s includes a long snapper and whoever will end up counting for 2018, so the Tide might still have more pound-for-pound position talent, but the Buckeyes had about the best class they possibly could’ve with just a 21-man group. (You know Urban Meyer’s feeling good when, during the class’ construction, he jokes with a recruit about taking the Rams job.)
3. USC finished No. 4 overall, but takes home the Coffee Is For Closers Trophy after landing six new blue-chips on Signing Day alone. The Trojans haven’t lost at anything since a football game on September 23, it feels like.
4. Georgia signed its best class ever, with Kirby Smart totally dominating the rest of the division, perhaps excepting Florida’s surprisingly strong close. The Dawgs also locked down their state borders (signing 16 of the state’s 33 blue-chips), something that Mark Richt was often criticized for failing to do (though, if you look at the numbers, he was much better at it than you recall).
5. The single biggest new commit of the day: five-star DT Marvin Wilson to Florida State over LSU via custom Jordans, giving the Noles the No. 1 prospect from five different states.
6. The rest of the rankings in full are over here, and here’s a list of pretty much all the day’s new commitments.
7. Here’s a little something to know about each of the top 10 incoming freshmen.
8. Michigan’s top-five class is great and all, but here’s your daily dose of Jim Harbaugh demonstrating how to dance like Usher.
9. Texas signed its lowest-rated class ever, but let’s not bail on Tom Herman just yet. The Big 12 fared poorly as a whole, except for Oklahoma, which had more blue-chips by itself (18) than the rest of the league combined (14).
10. Texas A&M finished a solid No. 12 and still blew away the whole rest of the state. Baylor did manage to have one of the Big 12’s classes after Matt Rhule started two months ago with just one commit.
11. Maryland’s in the top 20! Perhaps the Terps’ best class ever! What a time!
12. Best post-NSD presser goes to Florida’s Jim McElwain, who clearly enjoyed UF’s Wednesday.
13. Hugh Freeze called Ole Miss’ No. 30 class a “penalty,” thanks to the ever-lingering NCAA cloud. The Rebels did close with a deluge of three-star commits, some of them nice surprises.
14. The All-Name Team captain and perhaps the new greatest name in all of football: Illinois State’s Kobe Buffalomeat.
15. The day’s wildest commitments: Chaz Ah You to BYU via helicopter landing in the stadium, Cordarrian Richardson to Maryland via outer-space weather balloon, Levi Jones to USC via T-shirt triple-fake, Tae-Kion Reed to Ole Miss by hurling a Mississippi State hat across the room like a disgusted Bobby Shmurda, Dazz Newsome to UNC via jacket-and-hat fakeout, and Jarez Parks to Bama (eventually) while standing in front of the Eiffel Tower. No dogs, that I know of.
16. Five-star Michigan Signing Day commit Aubrey Solomon sure sounded like he said “the University of Miami.”
17. The only thing all day that shocked me: four-star Jamyest Williams picking a non-shiny South Carolina hat over a super-shiny Georgia hat. Hat Theory lied.
18. Florida’s class included a surprise commit from a four-star WR who’d gotten into some minor trouble at Ohio State a couple weeks earlier and wasn’t expected to announce.
19. “Michigan State commit isn’t signing on Signing Day because he went to jail.”
20. Washington State signee pulls off impressive achievement: commitments to three different schools in three weeks.
21. Mike Gundy continues to embrace his Chill Country Dad vibe, rocking a Big Daddy mug on NSD.
22. Jim Mora continues to embrace his Angry Softball Dad vibe, immediately barking at ESPN2 in defense of his quarterback.
23. The top-ranked mid-major class: at Memphis, which topped eight Power 5 teams. The good vibes extended to FAU, where Lane Kiffin credited his terrible promo video with helping him sign the school’s best class ever.
24. These are the 25 lies you’ll tell yourself about this recruiting class, unless you’re at the top of your conference.
25. Your coaches are already well into the process of building their 2018 recruiting boards.
26. And the actual No. 1 thing to know: all of this mattered so, so, so much.
