I think more people should use “sweetheart” as a third person descriptor like boyfriend/girlfriend. Aside from being cute I think it’s actually useful as a gender neutral equivalent.
First, it’s about the same level of seriousness. “Date” sounds like someone you’ve met once or twice for drinks and “partner” sounds like you’re deep in a committed relationship. Second, while it’s not common to use in this way nowadays it’s also not new or unheard of. It might sound a little more casual in conversation than a newer term like “lovebuddy.” (Don’t get me wrong, I like this term. It just sounds a bit more deliberately gender neutral if that makes sense; it’s more likely to raise the eyebrows of your homophobic great uncle.) Third, it sounds a little antiquated and queer and that is very sexy and valid.
