Ocasio-Cortez gets the superhero treatment in upcoming comic book
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) will be featured in an upcoming comic book.
The comic book, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Freshman Force: New Party Who Dis?, will be published by Devil’s Due Comics, and will be released in May.
The comic promises to have the New York congresswoman and the “freshman force” take on “the establishment.” One cover has Ocasio-Cortez standing over a hurt red elephant while a blue donkey nervously looks on in the background.
A variant cover for the comic book’s “Washington Warrior Collector Variant” is similar, but has the lawmaker dressed similarly to Wonder Woman.
Uh oh, did a thing again! Please share! My celebration of @AOC & the diverse new congress, from @devilsdue. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez & the Freshman Force #1(of 1). Featuring work by, @deanhaspiel @thejillthompson @HoytSilva @JoseGIHP & many more! https://t.co/JOrR5eVV5k pic.twitter.com/PumKFOGbAG
— Josh Blaylock (@joshblaylock) February 22, 2019
The founder of Devils Due Comics, Josh Blaylock, told ABC News that the book would be an anthology.
“I have a really, really nice, sweet one that’s just like a pleasant commentary on just being excited about things,” he told the news outlet. “There are some completely absurd, irreverent ones that are really like just cathartic venting about, you know, the current climate that we’re living in. Some are more just like a narrative, educational overview.”
He added that he was inspired to create the comic book after Ocasio-Cortez quoted the character Rorschach from the graphic novel Watchmen earlier this year.
To quote Alan Moore: “None of you understand. I'm not locked up in here with YOU. You're locked up in here with ME.”

“I see a fresh new body of congresspeople coming into the system that are asking the classic question of, ‘Why are things being done this way?” Blaylock told the New York Times. “AOC is looking at core issues I’ve never seen either side address.”

Trump fans describe harrowing acts of ‘Magaphobia’ by mean liberals
The president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., claimed on Monday that a person could not walk the streets of downtown Chicago in Trump gear without getting shot. While that statement was met with ridicule for the hyperbole it was, it echoed a sentiment that has been percolating online among Trump’s biggest supporters.
Trump supporters frequently coin new phrases to explain away the fact that their president is disliked by many. Previously, they’ve tried Trump Derangement Syndrome. Now, it’s Magaphobia.
One of Trump’s most ardent fans and extremely online right-winger Jack Posobiec began tweeting about it in the wake of both the Jussie Smollett hoax and a conservative supporter getting punched in California. It’s a way to show how Trump’s opponents are driven mad by people’s support of the president.
#Magaphobia: Know The Signs
– Red hats send you into fits of rage
– Suspecting your neighbors of being KGB agents
– Screaming "traitor" at the TV
– Suspecting midwestern kids of being cryptonazis
– Using your Oscar speech to spread hate

While Trump supporters have faced instances of violence, they support a president who has been rabid in inciting his base of followers to commit acts of violence against journalists and his political opponents and has stoked fear toward people of color.
Nothing any Trump supporter—people who are largely white and male (like Posobiec)—has faced compares to anything persecuted minorities in America experience.
They’ll be alright.

Should you care that Trump’s pastry chef believes in QAnon?
On Friday evening, the Daily Beast released a report that revealed a baker at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort believed in the QAnon conspiracy, the online movement that thinks Trump is secretly working to take down a cabal of pedophiles and Democrats within the federal government.
The news item stirred the right online.
According to the report, the chef bakes Q-themed cakes while working at Trump’s Florida resort.
On Christmas, for example, [she] posted an Instagram picture of a gingerbread house in what appears to be a Mar-a-Lago ballroom. The side of the gingerbread house is emblazoned with a “Q” made of blue frosting and dusted with glitter.
“Merry Christmas from the Jewel of Palm Beach,” [she] wrote, adding a “#QAnon” hashtag and the acronym “WWG1WGA,” a reference to the QAnon slogan “Where we go one, we go all.”
The chef has baked cakes for Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr. as well. In a bio, she wrote that she stepped down from a different job to serve the first family, implying she’s only been at Mar-a-Lago since Trump was elected. Whether this bit of information matters has become a surprising point of contention.
A lot of Trump supporters and conservative media types were adamantly against the baker being outed as a QAnon fan, calling it an overreach by the mainstream media.
“They’re doxing a pastry chef, because she works at a building owned by Trump. They’re going after a pastry chef,” Ezra Levant wrote on Twitter.
There is a factual error with the right’s narrative that the Daily Beast was “doxing” or publicly unmasking a private citizen, however: Her fringe and dangerous political views were publicly available to anyone who perused her social media profiles, according to the Daily Beast’s Will Sommer.
This woman is a pastry chef. She has zero power and zero impact on public policy. But because she’s eccentric and believes some wild conspiracy theories, Will Sommer decided to ruin her life and throw her to the mob. And they wonder why we hate them. https://t.co/wvcLcqXesA

Perhaps she’s just a person w/ whom you disagree, that happens to be a pastry chef? https://t.co/lnz0kkDFKY
— Chet Cannon (@Chet_Cannon) February 24, 2019

They're doxing a pastry chef, because she works at a restaurant in a building owned by Trump.
They're going after a pastry chef. https://t.co/BitLKjOut9
— Ezra Levant
Tumblr media
(@ezralevant) February 23, 2019
Even more mainstream journalists disagreed with the premise of the post, like the Intercept’s Glenn Greenwald.
This media practice of shaming low-level workers, ordinary citizens & powerless people for their political views is disgusting punching-down bullying – like that time CNN's @DrewGriffinCNN badgered an old Florida woman for unwittingly posting a Russian ad https://t.co/98IBtxILQ3 https://t.co/FDPulYGkVy
— Glenn Greenwald (@ggreenwald) February 24, 2019
However, those who report on misinformation, conspiracy theories, and the far-right defended the decision. Jared Holt said that it’s important to note that someone in the president’s “orbit” is espousing not only conservative views, but celebrating a “cult with bloodlust.”
Conservatives on the timeline today really in "how dare you" mode for reporting that someone on Trump payroll believes in a conspiracy theory that calls for the violent execution of perceived political foes and has inspired psychotic acts from its followers
— Jared Holt (@jaredlholt) February 23, 2019
The point is this: reporting out that someone in the Trump orbit is down with this stuff is absolutely newsworthy. This isn't just "wrongthink" political views–it's a cult with bloodlust.
— Jared Holt (@jaredlholt) February 23, 2019
The chef isn’t a policy adviser, and it’s not known what her interactions with the family are, outside of occasionally baking for them. But QAnon believers have been known to commit acts of violence, and many online have been thirsty for the opportunity to unleash the fictional and violent “storm,” a sort of siege and crusade against Democrats.
She is a private citizen employed by a private company—she is not the White House pastry chef. However, it just so happens that the private company she works for is owned by the president and his sons.
If she’s unhappy that her public views are being flagged and called out, well, she may want to consider setting her Insta to private.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez promises to pay her staffers a living wage, and it’s somehow controversial
Almost no decision made by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) is uncontroversial—and her decision to pay all of her staffers at least $52,000 a year is no exception.
Ocasio-Cortez wrote of her decision on Friday: “It’s likely one of the highest entry-level salaries on the Hill. We pinch pennies elsewhere, but it’s worth every dime to pay a living wage.”
Leadership starts with our choices.
That’s why I decided that no one on my staff will make less than $52k/year.

— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) February 23, 2019
The series of tweets on Friday and Saturday discussing the issue attracted more than 20,000 replies, some suggesting she distribute all salaries in her office equally, and others recycling a rumor about her employing her boyfriend, which has been debunked.
So if it is so sad, cut your pay and give everyone equal salaries including you.

On Sunday, Fox & Friends slammed Ocasio-Cortez over the decision, with host Pete Hegseth calling the decision “socialism and communism on display,” according to the Hill.
According to Roll Call, “Government watchdog groups say deep cuts to office and committee budgets have contributed to a lack of diversity in Hill offices, high turnover and congressional brain drain.”
The story adds that members of both parties had begun to call for better staff compensation even before the Democrats took over the House in January 2019.
Washington, D.C., is the fifth most expensive city to live in in the country. According to inc.com, it takes $90,811 to “live comfortably,” and rent is typically about $2,170 per month. The definition of “living comfortably” is based on a budgeting formula wherein 50 percent of your income should go to necessities, 30 percent to disposable income, and 20 percent to savings. In March 2018, median staffer salaries ranged from $35,925 to $81,491, according to USA Today.
In December 2018, Ocasio-Cortez announced that she would pay interns working for her at least $15 per hour.

Are you being harassed by a Bernie Bro or a Bernie bot?
Bernie Sanders’ Tuesday morning announcement that he would join the 2020 presidential race means one thing is inevitable: Online will be hell for the foreseeable future.
We have to deal with Bernie bros AGAIN?!
— Natasha Janardan (@natashajanardan) February 19, 2019
Throughout the 2016 primaries and even through the presidential election, Bernie Bros—a subset of extreme supporters—wreaked terror on Twitter, in Reddit threads and infamously on women reporters and Hillary Clinton supporters.
The Bernie Bro is a meme but also a phenomenon. It represents arguably one of the first times a die-hard mob formed around a presidential candidate and used social media so vigorously in support of them.
Most of the assault we received from Bernie Bros were Russian bots executing disinformation warfare. A lot of us, especially women, are still being attacked.
That said, Dems cannot repeat 2016.
If you support Bernie, don't be an asshole.
If you hate him, don't be an asshole.
— Ally Maynard (@missmayn) February 19, 2019
And now, everyone is bracing for their return. But what if this time, it’s just the bots?
Okay, the twitter account I just called out appears to be a bot. I have since deleted that tweet. However, his response to me is *not atypical* from what's appearing in my mentions from real accounts who support @BernieSanders
— igorvolsky (@igorvolsky) February 19, 2019
A recent report by Politico found that bot and inauthentic activity was ramping up on Twitter in advance of 2020, with Bernie Sanders one of the candidates seeing fake tweets and replies happening on their behalf, trying to widen America’s already chasm-like political divides.
Bernie Bots are swarming. pic.twitter.com/5fYfB1FR8x
— Crapsickle! (@KariMcNinch) February 19, 2019
So how do you know if it’s a bot or a bro in your mentions?
What is a Bernie Bro?
In 2016, Vox described Bernie Bros as a strain of Sanders supporters, made up of mostly younger white men. And according to the rest of the internet, they’re typically awful.
“[A Bernie Bro] typically presents as a white, male Bernie Sanders supporter who haunts Internet comment sections,” Slate reported in 2016.
Really dreading another election season of Bernie bros.
— Bridget Phetasy (@BridgetPhetasy) February 19, 2019
The term was thrown around so often during the height of the 2016 primaries that even Urban Dictionary joined in explaining the phenomenon. The slang website defined a Bernie Bro as an “insufferable, self-righteous, left-wing activist,” and a set of “volatile, unstable, angry Bernie Sanders supporters.”
“They’re a mob, and it’s not positive toward their candidate, it’s trying to tear you down from supporting Hillary,” a chief of staff for a Democratic member of Congress who’s endorsed Clinton said at the time.
However, it’s wrong to paint all of Bernie’s support at young and male. Bernie Bros only represent a group of supporters. In his past run, Sanders garnered support from minority and young voters according to a Harvard-Harris poll.
My #BernieBro familia. Proud #BernieBros. #JustAnotherBernieBro. #Bernie2020 pic.twitter.com/EnrA1NgkmP
— Elianna (@elihazeleyes) February 20, 2019
1) Bernie Bros are a real thing and they really harassed a lot of people, especially women, in 2016 and beyond.
2) Not every Bernie supporter is a Bernie Bro.
Both of things can be true at the same time.
— Louisa
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(@LouisatheLast) February 19, 2019
But the actual Bros were one unique kind of terrible. True-to-form Bernie Bros are obsessive, narcissistic young men who grapple with feminism and are just a Facebook war away from saying all genders matter
As we saw in the race between Sanders and Clinton, Bernie Bros are typically sexist—a troubling factor considering how many women are already running in 2020. During the 2016 primaries, the bros were called out for aggressive online attacks against women reporters and female Clinton supporters, The New York Times reported.
Bill Clinton condemned those attacks, saying that Bernie Bros forced a female blogger to use a pseudonym to avoid “vicious trolling and attacks that are literally too profane often—not to mention sexist—to repeat.”
All the Bernie bros are rising from their caskets now, stirring to life, growling in their caps, ready to send female candidates a bunch of where-were-you-whens#BernieSanders #BernieSanders
— Beths Bowl of Ennuitabix (@bethwritesstuff) February 19, 2019
“Berniebros clearly do exist,” Washington Post correspondent Philip Bump wrote in 2016. “While fans of many of the candidates paint the 2016 election in remarkably stark terms of doom and transcendence, fans of Sanders are very vocal about it—and that overlaps with an internet culture that’s broadly slow to keep young, angry men in check when they act out. With a culture that often fails when it tries to do so.”
Bros were in full form back in 2016 when Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, a New Hampshire Democrat and Clinton supporter posted a photo of her and Clinton on stage together to her Facebook page.
As documented by Mashable, comments included gems like “Their vaginas are making terrible choices,”  written by someone named Scott Lockhart, who also commented about supporting Sanders.
And when Sanders announced this week, many women who were vocal in the 2016 election, voiced their concerns, saying that the bros who @’ed them incessantly, trying to shout down support of Clinton, would be back.
But, not all Bernie Bros are Bernie Bros. In a number of 2016 autopsies, we learned that some of the Twitter accounts that were masking as extreme Bernie Bros were actually bots.
Tumblr media
perhaps
Tumblr media
— ૐ൬ҽժɨƈɨռɛ ฬටℓғ (@5thdimdreamz) May 31, 2016
Twitter users, like Guns Down America Executive Director Igor Volsky, are claiming to have already gotten into spats with bots on the very first day of Bernie’s announcement.

According to The New York Times, Twitter identified more than 2,000 accounts controlled by Russian operatives and over 36,000 bots that tweeted 1.4 million times during the election.
And they’re not all telling readers just to  #feelthebern. Bots exist to influence opinions—in 2016’s case, to influence an American presidential election—to poke and to antagonize.
But seeing as Bernie Bros being vocal made for a divisive primary season in the last election, there’s no surprise they are back in bot form. They’ll want people who are anti-Bernie to hate him just as much as die-hard Bros really do love him.
To combat this, there are easy tips to ensure see if you are dealing with a Bro or a bot. Perhaps the easiest step is to use websites like botcheck.me. By typing in a user’s handle will tell you if the account is likely a political bot or tweeting out highly automated patterns.
The Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRL) suggests looking out for factors like how often tweets are posted, if bios and profile photos are generic, a lack of original wording and a lot of retweets.
A pattern you may have noticed: many bot and troll accounts have usernames that end in 8 random digits. pic.twitter.com/54Gc8Jq35L

Before you start complaining about "Bernie Bro" trolls, do make sure they're actually real people and not Russian bots intentionally trying to stir up hatred.

And if the early returns are any indications, the bots will be everywhere. As will the Bros.
But while both are likely to be harassing you, neither are worth your time.

Almost 30 years ago, our Voyager 1 spacecraft snapped the first-ever family portrait of our solar system — including the image of Earth as just a tiny point of light, known as the “Pale Blue Dot.” Take a moment to cherish the only home we’ve ever known: https://go.nasa.gov/2N8xACh pic.twitter.com/O3qBpIX2Iz
