PTFE tape vs. Paste as Thread Sealant for Taper threads
Taper threads require a thread sealant for lubrication to prevent damage from galling and seizing during assembly. Thread sealants also fill any voids between the two threads that could cause a spiral leak.
Cylinder valve standards related to installing cylinder valves with taper threads into the cylinders allow both PTFE tape and paste to be used as a thread sealant. However, PTFE tapes are much more commonly used in the gas industry than paste. My experience is that most users are not aware of the possibility of using thread sealant paste.

Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages, and being aware of them is the first step in making an informed choice about their usage. In both cases, it is essential to choose the proper specification of thread sealants to ensure compatibility with the cylinder valve, cylinder, and the gas service/s for which the valve shall be used.
Benefits of Thread sealant paste:
Unlike PTFE tape, which has to be removed before re-application, thread sealant pastes (like Krytox™ TS4) can be reapplied over the existing paste.
Pastes easily cling to threads and do not shred or tear during assembly /disassembly.
Pastes are easier and faster to apply on the threads, unlike tapes that need operator skill to ensure the correct taping procedure is followed (unless the taping process is automated).
Benefits of PTFE tape:
PTFE tapes are more forgiving to machining inaccuracy, and they tend to assist in making the thread joint leak proof even if the threads are machined slightly out of specification.
The cost-effectiveness of both solutions has to be evaluated case by case by the user. Either solution may prove cost-effective depending upon variables not limited to the thread sealant cost, labour cost, quantity, and how frequently the cylinder valves are required to be uninstalled and reinstalled into the cylinder.
Supposing users responsible for installing cylinder valves into cylinders have never used or evaluated the possibility of using paste as a cost-effective thread sealant, I encourage them to give it a try.

Use of CNC technology in Cylinder Valve machining
My first visit to the UK in 2002 involved a meeting with a UK tool supplier in a small English town about 130 miles South East of London. We used to procure cutting tools like chasers and taps from the UK suppliers known for their precision and long life. Good quality cutting tools were critical to the productivity and accuracy of the threads manufactured on manual capstan lathe machines, which we were using for the last thirty years.
Computerised Numerical Control (CNC) machines had arrived in India in the mid-1990s, but they were expensive, programming was considered a challenge, and there were not many people trained to set the machine. A few self-proclaimed machining experts discouraged us from buying CNC’s, citing the involvement of significant investments; feeding them would be a challenge. It was speculated, even projected, that the lack of return on investment would sink our company if the machines were not properly utilised.

For the first 30+ years, our machine shop featured a series of capstan lathe machines. Despite using the best quality cutting tools, the machining technology could be described as rudimentary at best, as both productivity and quality were dependent on the operator’s skill.
With some apprehension, we decided to invest in a CNC turning centre in October 2003. We hired a CNC consultant who helped us shortlist three suppliers before deciding on Ace Designers, Bangalore. Our first CNC turning machine, tooled up for two of our high running models, arrived in May 2004.
The doomsday scenario did not unfold as we started getting consistent quality parts after our engineers fine-tuned the fixtures and tweaked the tooling received. The learning curve on how to use the CNC machine had well and truly started. We spent a lot of time optimising the cutting oil and selecting appropriate single point carbide tools for turning, boring and threading to reduce the cycle time for different operations.
Our production increased 2.5-3.5 times in comparison with manual capstan lathe machines. We decided not to utilise our capstan operators to work on the CNC machines as they were not conditioned to challenge the status quo. It was likely that they would be satisfied with an incremental (and not exponential) increase in productivity, hindering our machine utilisation.
We soon placed our second CNC turning machine within three months of starting the first machine. We had a fleet of eight CNC turning machines in three years, and it was now time for our technical director to doubt if we had invested too fast and whether market growth would be sustainable to support the investments. Each machine was compared to an elephant needing a lot of food every day, so feeding them day in day out was considered a challenge.
All apprehensions have been put to rest, and now we have a fleet of 45 CNC machines, including the world’s top brands. Most of our earlier purchased two-axis machines have been replaced in recent years by multitasking machines with up to eight axis for simultaneous turning and milling operations, offering unparalleled quality in a single set-up.
Our growth and reputation as India’s leading cylinder valve manufacturer have been mainly possible due to the CNC machining technology we initially flirted with at the start of the millennium, engaged a few years later and married before the end of the decade.
As our capstan operators retired, we slowly but surely phased out our capstan machines. We have managed to retain one, and even if it is no longer in use, it stands proudly as a relic from the past and just got a fresh coat of paint. The new breed of CNC machine operators have no idea how to operate the capstan lathe, and most have not seen it running in its glory days.
Our chaser cabinet still houses the hundreds of unused thread chasers we had procured from the UK. In no hurry to be used.

The gas industry associations serve as the gateway to the global market for gas equipment used to store, control, and regulate gas flow. Some were founded more than 100 years back, and they serve as the industry's voice, focusing on safety and stewardship. Our participation in the gas industry association started in 1975 when the All India Industrial Gases Manufacturers Association (AIIGMA) was founded.

Each of these prestigious memberships has provided us with invaluable opportunities to network with customers and industry leaders. 
Gas industry associations create standards, technical and safety bulletins, and other best practice documents and guidelines for the industry and end-users to refer, follow and adapt. Participation in the meetings allows members to share knowledge and expertise with industry folks and help keep abreast of the latest development in the industry. The diverse meeting locations allow members to travel to new places and take some valuable time away to reflect, introspect and recharge.  The extraordinary camaraderie and cherished memories are often created over single malts after the business sessions.  No wonder the gas industry professionals are known for their appetite to drink and talk at length, fondly reminiscing past stories year after year. 
On a serious note, the gas industry associations serve as the industry's guardians and conscience keepers and every member, big or small, benefits from participation. The association helps keep the  ego of the member companies in check. It makes the members realize that their organizations and industry are only as good as the public's perception at large. 
In conclusion, while the members compete with other members for business outside, they collaborate through industry associations to keep their people and products safe. The mantra for the industry through active participation is "Together we fail, together we succeed".

Lubricants and Cylinder valves
The action of applying a substance such as oil or grease to an engine or component so as to minimize friction and allow smooth movement.
Running an internal combustion (IC) engine working without lubricants would be disastrous. Moving parts rubbing against each other cause frictional force and heat, and without lubrication by the engine oil, engine parts would wear quickly. Lubrication also carries some heat from the moving parts, delivers it to the surroundings, and reduces noise created by the moving parts.
Historically lubricants have not been widely used in high-pressure cylinder valves even though they threaded parts moving against each other at high pressure create similar challenges as faced by an IC engine. Any trace of oil and grease is still considered Danger in Oxygen service, and rightly so as hydrocarbon-based grease in contact with high-pressure oxygen act as fuel in case of fire.

Indian gas industry association AIIGMA sells safety poster mentioning, No oil or similar lubricant should be used on the valves or other fittings of the cylinders.
Till December 1994, the Indian valve standard had the same outlet connection for Oxygen and Inert service. British standard, BS 341-3, still specifies Outlet connection Number 3 for Oxygen and Inert gas service.
Due to the valves having the same outlet connections and similar material of construction, users seldom differentiated between Oxygen and Inert gas cylinder valves. Thus even Nitrogen and Argon gas cylinder valves were used without any lubricant even though there is no risk of using cheaper hydrocarbon-based grease in Inert gas service.
Lubrication's benefits have been largely unrealized in cylinder valves manufactured and used in several countries worldwide. The use of key-operated valves compensated for the high torques required to move threaded parts under pressure. Key-operated valves allowed the user to impart a high level of torque to operate the valve even though it led to seizing and galling and need to repair and maintain the valves frequently.
PFPE based greases suitable for Oxygen service for different pressure ratings have been available in the US and Europe since the late 1990s and early 2000s and used by valve manufacturers. PFPE lubricants are not hydrocarbon-based and do not carry the risk of ignition in high-pressure oxygen service when tested and qualified for the maximum pressure to which the valves are rated.
Cylinder valve designs have improved significantly in the last 20 years. The improvement and sophistication in the valve design, coupled with the increased use of wheel operated O-ring seal design cylinder valve and Residual pressure technology, has necessitated the selection and usage of lubrication as a critical design element affecting the valve's performance and safety not only in Oxygen and Inert service but also for flammable, toxic, corrosive and specialty gas application.
Being asked to design and manufacture valves without lubricants is now similar to be asked to perform on stage with two left feet.
