The Missing Piece of Charlie O'Reilly [Walden Pond Press, $16.99, hc] by Rebecca K S Ansari - Charlie is positive that he had a little brother, Liam, who disappeared a year ago. But since his parents are just as positive that Charlie has always been an only child, the only thing Charlie is getting for his conviction is trips to the therapist. It's not just that Liam is gone, either, Charlie realizes. Other things just aren't right. His mother's incurable sadness has deteriorated into a paralyzing depression, and Charlie is having disturbing dreams about the suffering his Irish ancestors endured during the potato famine and on the hard trip to America. Charlie's best friend, Ana, is the only one who believes him. But when Charlie reports that someone has been in his room, rearranging his comics, and he's sure it's Liam, even Ana's faith falters. Then Charlie gets a letter in what he's sure is Liam's handwriting, telling him to, “Ask Jonathan.” Jonathan is the assistant coach for Charlie and Ana's soccer team, and Charlie is afraid to approach him, sure that Jonathan will think he's crazy. But when Charlie finally works up his courage, Jonathan believes him. Moreover, he believes him because he, too, was a child who disappeared. A gripping story about the meaning of family, with plenty of heart-stopping twists.

Fox and the Box [Greenwillow Books, $17.99, hc] by Yvonne Ivinson - Fox has a box, but what he really needs is a boat, so he can go on an ocean adventure. He trades a shell for a sail and sets to work, and soon he's floating on the water. However, the further out he floats, the rougher the ocean becomes. He bails and bails, but when the storm calms, he's lost. All he can see is sea. Then a helpful whale comes up under him and carries him back to the shore. A beautiful book with only a few words and wonderfully expressive pictures.

How to Read a Book [HarperCollins, $17.99, hc] by Kwame Alexander and Melissa Sweet - First find yourself a comfy place to sit: in an overstuffed chair, under a tree, or on the front stoop, like Langston Hughes. Then gently peel back the book's skin, like a lemon. Dig your thumb into each juicy section and pop out the words. With beautifully cadenced verse, Alexander leads the reader through the romance of reading, while Sweet's illustrations make the magic real.

The Missing Piece of Charlie O’Reilly Plus GIVEAWAY!
“Charlie did know that. He knew a lot of things: that his dad’s promotion at the museum of natural history meant a lot of trips out of town; that the raise that came with the new job was necessary to replace some of Mom’s income;that he should be thankful they hadn’t moved out of their house in Kingsberg to be closer to New York City. Knowing all this however, didn’t make it easier. It seemed…
