PATHWAY BRIEF - STIMULI
BTEC Assignment Brief Qualification BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art and Design
Unit number and title
Unit 4- Information and Interpretation in Art and Design Unit 5 – Personal Experimental Studies in Art and Design Unit 6 – Extended Media Development in Art and Design Note: Both units only require a Pass grade Learning aim(s) (For NQF only) QCF Assignment title FINE ART Assessor Phil Chamberlain Issue date 27/11/17 Hand in deadline   11/12/17
Vocational Scenario or Context Fine Art deals in unknowns and discoveries, and draws on diverse starting points from which individuals or collectives make their work. This Pathway project aims to develop your ability to respond to create work which based on fragments of cultural information, drawn from contemporary and Historical literature, media and other sources, which are deliberately ambiguous and open to interpretation.
You are encouraged to challenge any existing preconceptions you have about what you decide to make work about and your own skills and look upon the brief as an opportunity to test out new techniques, combine disciplines, and rethink the thinking skills you have.
You are required to identify ideas that interest you from these starting points, in order to develop a body of work and present a final outcome, or outcomes in your chosen specialist Pathway area. The fact that this is a Fine art title does not stop you from working across disciplines and pathways, but uses a Fine Art methodology to begin work.
This will be assessed by a group exhibition that will demonstrate that you have a broad understanding of a range of issues, techniques and disciplines. Being able to contextualise your work alongside contemporary cultural activity is encouraged by the vast majority of creative employers and universities.
Task 1 Stimulus
Initial Concept / Ideas
Over a course of a number of sessions, and independently in your own time, choose a process (drawing , painting, casting, construction, photography , film)
Consider the following starting points , which are deliberately open ended for you to interpret in any way . Then make a series of explorations as a response to one or more of these .
So I looked at the scenery, She read her magazine; And the moon rose over an open field. “Kathy, I’m lost”, I said, Though I knew she was sleeping. “I’m empty and aching and I don’t know why. https://www.paulsimon.com/track/america-5/ Southerly, veering northwesterly, 5 to 7, becoming variable 3 or 4. By “inscape” he means the unified complex of characteristics that give each thing its uniqueness and that differentiate it from other things, http://www.victorianweb.org/authors/hopkins/hopkins1.html   A young woman is walking along a London street, that much is clear, but what is happening in her consciousness seems to take place in another dimension. It is a world totally divorced from her surroundings: she is listening to music through MP3 earphones with eyes glued to the arrow on the GPS screen on her Iphone. At the moment of leaving a Tube Station, stepping into the street and pressing the GPS button, you are lost, says Mr Self. You have your exact location, but without orientation it is meaningless. The skill of being lost is allowing ourselves to be disorientated, rather than handing it over to the SatNav. Internal map-making, which starts by paying acute observation to our surroundings, is basic to human memory. We abdicate it at our peril.  WIll Self “The sigh of all the seas breaking in measure round the isles soothed them; the night wrapped them; nothing broke their sleep, until, the birds beginning and the dawn weaving their thin voices into its whiteness”  To The Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf

Tips on researching
Good use of Primary and secondary research are vital in this stage. Explore a range of ideas before you pursue one in particular.
Research and collect imagery from as many sources as possible, books, newspapers, magazines, television, podcasts, internet, exhibitions visits in order to get your ideas going. Don’t accept or agree with all that you read, try to form an broad ‘overall’ view
Record initial ideas by sketching, taking photos – document everything!
Record / bookmark / save to favourites websites you visit.
Photocopy sections of articles and keep an ongoing bibliography of books / periodicals you have looked at in a word document. Use apps such as Ref Me to catalogue books that you look at.
Use your studio wall and sketchbook to display this research.
Use other people are a resource!  Discussing your research and ideas with peers, family, friends and tutors may help you to develop ideas or point you towards other resources.

'Russian trolls' say they're planning a Reddit AMA — and emailed a handful of reporters with a cryptic request
Thomson Reuters
'Russian trolls' who claim to be connected to a website recently exposed as a Russian propaganda operation say they're planning a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" session.
The "trolls" emailed reporters on Tuesday asking them to submit questions for the AMA.
BlackMattersUS describes itself as "a nonprofit news outlet that delivers raw and original information on the most urgent issues important to the African-American community in America."
Around 3 p.m. Tuesday, a handful of reporters who have written about Russia's use of troll factories to crank out disinformation and junk news received a cryptic email from a self-professed "Russian troll" claiming to be affiliated with a propaganda site that was recently exposed as a Russian influence operation.
Screenshot
The email was sent to this reporter, as well as to The New Yorker's Adrian Chen and ThinkProgress' Casey Michel. BuzzFeed's Ryan Brooks received the email, too. When the reporters tried to respond to the [email protected] email address on Tuesday the email bounced back — but it went through when Business Insider reached out again on Wednesday.
The individual behind the account did not immediately respond to a request for further comment. Michel said he was asked to "show some patience" when he asked for more details early Wednesday.
The email linked out to blackmattersus.com, a site that was exposed by Michel earlier this month as a Russian propaganda operation. The site is still active, but its landing page has been transformed into an advertisement for a Reddit AMA with "Russian trolls."
Screenshot/BlackMattersUS
"MR. Zuckerberg is so scared of Russian trolls that he won't let you share our link," the page says, referring to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook shut down the BlackMattersUS account last month as part of its purge of 470 pages believed to be operating out of Russia.
"Joshua Smith," the name attached to the [email protected] email address, is listed as "an editor of BlackMatters" on the website's "About Us" section.
"Working as an independent journalist he had experienced numerous hardships trying to publish different articles which contained not only facts about race inequality but also the explanations, why things are going exactly this way," Smith's biography reads. "So, the only way to let people know the truth was to make his own news site."
BuzzFeed's Ryan Brooks noted that a cached version of the landing page featured a countdown clock and a promotional video for the AMA, which appeared to have been scheduled for October 30. An actor who was exposed by The Daily Beast as likely working for the Russians appeared in the promo.
Reddit did not return BI's request for comment by press time. But a company spokesperson told ThinkProgress that they "haven’t seen any evidence of them actually coordinating with any of the communities."
“They’re saying they’re doing it, but they’re collecting questions on their website, which is also sort of strange, because that’s not how you do an AMA," the spokesperson said.
The site describes itself as "a nonprofit news outlet that delivers raw and original information on the most urgent issues important to the African-American community in America. Our aim is to tell the bold truth about racism, inequality and injustice the mainstream media keep out-of-sight."
But the site was also outwardly opposed to Hillary Clinton. Its Tumblr account, which has since been removed, described the Democratic presidential nominee as "Satan’s daughter," "The root of all evil," and "Himmlery aka ('Death for Dollars') – 'The Benghazi Bulls------,'" Michel has reported.
Its website similarly villainized her as a “Candidate For the Corporate Elite" and praised a documentary produced by the far-right pundit Dinesh D'Souza.
"Most of the world now knows that Bill and Hillary Clinton have been partners in crime when it comes to dirty laundering for the Clinton Foundation and many other atrocities," the site said. "We would like to share this new film with the community, as it may fail to go into masses or be replicated in the media because the most of the media have already been bought by the Democrats."
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was also heavily promoted by BlackMattersUS.
Recent reports and an examination of the Russia-linked accounts on various social media platforms have indicated that Russia's propaganda efforts during the 2016 election were focused primarily on exploiting divisions over issues like race and immigration.
And as Business Insider has previously reported, the accounts' activity did not stop at posting controversial memes and hashtags — many organized events, rallies, and protests, some of which galvanized dozens of people.
Russia-linked Facebook groups like Heart of Texas and SecuredBorders tried to organize anti-immigrant rallies in Texas and Idaho in the months leading up to the election.
Another group, Being Patriotic, organized pro-Trump flash mobs across Florida in August 2016, according to The Daily Beast. And BlackMattersUS recruited an LA-based activist named Nolan Hack to amplify the group's messaging and even stage a protest in downtown Jackson, Mississippi.
