One recent “point,” Bhattacharya recalled, was Khalid telling them that from what he had seen in jail, Hindi-language newspapers are how most inmates got their news. If they were running public campaigns to persuade the BJP government to release political prisoners under their regime, they should start writing in Hindi. Lahiri recalled that while English-language newspapers carried both the prosecution and defence arguments of Khalid’s year-long bail hearings in the trial court hearing the Delhi riots conspiracy case and then the Delhi High Court, the Hindi language newspapers barely reported the arguments Khalid’s lawyer Trideep Pais made in court. They, however, carried the claims made by the police in a prominent place, with headlines that made allegations sound like facts.

#Delhi riots: Police wrote fanciful stories, put 'tadka' to charge sheet, Umar Khalid tells court The Delhi Police had earlier said that Umar Khalid's bail plea has no merit and that it will demonstrate the prima facie case against him Former JNU student leader Umar Khalid, accused in the Delhi riots conspiracy case, on Tuesday told a court here that investigating officer wrote fanciful stories in the charge sheet and contended whether organising chakka jaam (road blockade) constitute an offence to invite invocation of anti-terror law the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).  Khalid, along with several others, has been booked under stringent UAPA and is accused of being the "masterminds" of the February 2020 northeast Delhi riots, which had left 53 people dead and over 700 injured.  Delhi riots charge sheet reads like web series, says Umar Khalid; refers to Harry Potter villain Arguing his bail plea in the riots conspiracy case before Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat, his lawyer referred to the supplementary charge sheet filed in the case and said that the police wished to paint every accused with the same brush while adding 'tadka' (flavour) to it. The Delhi Police had earlier said that Umar Khalid's bail plea has no merit and that it will demonstrate the prima facie case against him before the court by referring to the charge sheet filed in the case. However, during the hearing on Tuesday, senior advocate Trideep Pais, appearing for Umar Khali told the court, “I'll show your honour how UAPA is not made out or allegations are improbable. Delhi Court summons Kanhaiya Kumar on March 15 for 2016 JNU sedition case hearing  He referred to three allegations made against the accused in the charge sheet, emphasising that they were fertile imagination of the police and had no consistency. He submitted that the first allegation levelled by the police in the charge sheet was that JNU student Sharjeel Imam created a WhatsApp group of Muslim students on the directio (at India) https://www.instagram.com/p/CU9YLTqsgSzLMJvDNymwc9N_R6_BuqnDvXF3So0/?utm_medium=tumblr

Uphaar cinema fire: Probing passport officials' role in issuing travel document to Sushil Ansal, police tells Delhi HC
http://tinyurl.com/y4aqsdrt New Delhi: The police told the Delhi High Court on Tuesday that it had launched a probe into the role of passport officials in connection with the issuance of the travel document to real estate baron Sushil Ansal, convicted for the 1997 Uphaar cinema fire incident that claimed 59 lives. The Crime Branch of Delhi Police, in a status report placed before Justice Najmi Waziri, said an “investigation regarding the role of passport officials has also been initiated”. File image of Delhi High Court. PTI It added that a notice was served to the Regional Passport Office (RPO) “for the details of all passports issued to Sushil Ansal from 2000 onwards, including the one in 2018”. The status report, filed through advocate Trideep Pais, said the police were probing all the aspects as regards the passport issued to Ansal. After perusing the report, the court listed the matter for further hearing on 23 July. It also discharged Ansal from the proceedings after his lawyers said all the reliefs sought against him were already granted and he had also joined the investigation. The report was filed in response to the court’s query on May 16 as to whether the police had lodged an FIR pursuant to a single-judge order on 17 December, 2018. On 17 December last, the court had directed the police to lodge an FIR in connection with Ansal getting a favourable verification report in 2013, when he had applied for a fresh passport. Subsequently, an FIR was registered against Ansal and the police officers who had given the favourable verification report. The police, on 13 March, had told the court that they had started interrogating Ansal as regards the issuance of the passport to him. The court was hearing a plea moved by the Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT), through its chairperson Neelam Krishnamoorthy, seeking a CBI probe into the alleged criminal misconduct by passport and police officials in issuing the travel document to Ansal. On 13 June, 1997, a fire in the Uphaar cinema hall in the national capital had killed 59 people during the screening of Hindi film Border. Krishnamoorthy, who lost her two children in the tragedy, has been fighting a legal battle on behalf of the victims’ families for over 20 years now. The Supreme Court, in 2017, had asked Gopal Ansal, who was also convicted in the case, to undergo the remaining of his one-year jail term in the case, while his elder brother Sushil Ansal got relief from incarceration in view of age-related complications with a prison term already undergone by him. The AVUT, represented by senior advocate Vikas Pahwa, had earlier alleged in the court that there was a “nexus” and “conspiracy” between the RPO officials, police officers and Ansal, which had led to the issuance of the passport to the latter, despite being convicted in the Uphaar tragedy case. The application for a new passport or for re-issuance or replacement of lost or damaged passport issued by the Ministry of External Affairs mandates the applicant to disclose whether he is involved in a criminal case and to produce a no-objection certificate from the court concerned in case he is involved in any criminal prosecution. This company advertised a floor cleaner made of cow urine and Indians went berserk
Image: PATANJALI SCREENGRAB
One of India’s fastest-growing consumer goods companies, Patanjali Ayurved, advertised a product that has captured the attention of the masses.
Gonyle a floor disinfectant made from cow urine showed up in full-page ads in leading Indian newspapers on Sunday.

Though cow urine, popularly known as ‘go mutra’, is considered sacred in India, Patanjali’s innovation has met with bewilderment and annoyance.
The ad goes on to claim that the product is an attempt to “prohibit” the slaughter of cows that are regarded holy in some parts of India.

However, this is not the first time that Patanjali products have contained cow urine. The Press Trust of India reported a year ago that as many as five items, from cosmetics to medicines, use the fluid.
This has often met with protests from counter-religious groups. But Patanjali continues its unchecked march in the Indian FMCG industry and has been hailed as a major disruptive force.
