Community Member Spotlight: Kristi McDonald | Owner & Creator
Today we’re excited to introduce you to Kristi McDonald. Kristi is a serial entrepreneur, trailblazer, one of the hardest working and most innovative folks we know and is also a content partner. Content partners help Voyage in so many ways from spreading the word about the work that we do, sponsoring our mission and collaborating with us on content like this. Check out our conversation with Kristi below.
Kristi, thank you so much for joining us again.  We’re so excited to share more of your story and experiences with our readers.  For those who might have missed our earlier conversations, can you please briefly introduce yourself.
Hi, I’m Kristi McDonald, serial entrepreneur. I own two amazing companies designed to help the communities they are built in. I own Sip and Shop Texas and E Teacher App. I’m a wine taster, travel junkie & an adventure guru. I’m also the Co-Director of the DFW Chapter of Boss Talks Networks – so I stay busy!
What is Sip & Shop Texas? What can you expect? What does it look like? Did you know that East Texas produces EXCEPTIONAL award-winning wines and craft beers? You don’t have to travel to Napa Valley or Italy to try the best! You can try award winning local Texas Wines & Brews during a fun afternoon with Sip & Shop Texas.
Typically, an afternoon would look like us picking you up at NOON from ETX Brewing Co, just off the square in Tyler. Get there early if you’d like to grab lunch or a snack! You do have to buy tickets in advance, because tours typically sell out pretty quickly. Our most popular wine tour, we’ll start with a visit to Green Goat Winery in Edom, Texas. Nestled among their vineyard, the tasting room at Green Goat is the perfect place to relax & taste a trio of their signature wines. Edom is also known for it’s hidden and charming Art District. Guests always love to browse around Edom for fun & unique finds. We also stop in Ben Wheeler, TX. The lovely ladies of Vintage Cork 917 will host an exclusive tasting of special Texas wines, right in their cute boutique shop! Ben Wheeler, Texas was proud to be named the best little hidden town in Texas. It is always a fun stop. It is such a small community filled with very unique people and places. Jonathan Sibly from Forged in Fire has a studio there, so the men on the tours always love to stop in and see him working on his custom knives. You’ll have time to grab lunch, visit the shops and sample some local wines, before we load up to head to White Fox Vineyards. White Fox Vineyards award winning blueberry wine is always a crowd favorite. Sometimes our tours visit other wineries and other shopping locations – it really just depends on which tour you sign up for.
Our goal at Sip & Shop Texas is to create a positive, fun & healthy community full of friends & neighbors who love to shop local, sip local, support small business and have a lot of fun! We are launching tours in Ft. Worth. I’m very excited to be working with Visit Ft. Worth to create some great weekend experiences there too. We are going to have a lot of fun in Ft. Worth! Of course, everything is paused right now, because of the pandemic – but stay tuned. The magic happens again soon.
Who is on the “Sip & Shop Trail” ?
When I refer to “The Sip & Shop Trail” or “The Sippin’ Scene” – I’m referring to all of the people involved in making this happen. I have connected with so many great people along this journey. Ellis Classic Coach in Tyler make it possible with their sprinter vans and limos. All of the vineyard owners, restaurant owners, boutiques, art galleries – all the people and places along the way is who makes up “The Sip & Shop Trail.” We’ve even hosted events in Waco, where we stayed in one of the homes featured on HGTV’s “Fixer Upper” and explored all that area had to offer. The Sip and Shop Trail is all the people, places and things that are as unique as Texas and make it such a great experience to be a part of.
How can businesses get involved and be showcased through Sip and Shop Texas?
In person, it’s easy! We have several festivals throughout the year. We’re always looking for new and interesting places to visit. If you’re a business owner and would like us to stop in on one of our tours – just reach out! You can connect with me through the website, or give me a call. I’m also in the development stages of a Sip and Shop Texas app, that is going to give businesses access to my community and audience – so they can post and promote themselves in the area. We have bi-monthly newsletters, instagram, and facebook. I love creating content for Voyage Dallas and I’ve also recently had a few articles published in Thrive Global and Elephant Journal. With the Sip and Shop app, the vendors, businesses, restaurants, musicians – everyone on the “Sip and Shop Trail” will be able to use the platform to promote themselves and their business.
What is planned for the future? Anything exciting on the horizon? I am excited about the Sip and Shop App. I think it will be a great platform to put some of these smaller businesses in front of a large audience.
Finally, please let us know how our readers can connect with you and learn more.

HOLDING DOWN THE FART
It's been a long time since I posted.  Also, it's been a long time since we did anything notable!  Although the summer was long and too hot, we're enjoying Florida and seeing Shorty so much.  I embrace my laziness.  I signed up at CollecToons and Jigidi dot com.  We've been talking about Texas since June, but the date keeps getting moved.  I wanted to leave in the fall; Corny thought November.  We took a nice cruise in December and have Dr. appointments in January.  So far, the hope is to leave February 1, 2019.
We took the Jeep to Ferman's for a REAR differential leak; they replaced the FRONT axle on warranty...and left a drain hose unsecured so Corny had to change the fluid a couple months later.
End of July I took a solo trip in the Jeep to Wauseon, OH for an event.  On the way up I stopped in Frankfort, KY for some Interstate Challenge Finals.
Tumblr media
^I loved the little town of Frankfort, KY
I took my bike and tent for the three day event and stayed at the Fulton County Fairgrounds a few nights.  I rode my bike a lot, did a Poker Run, and traded a bunch of pathtags and stuff.  I’m ashamed to say I didn’t take any pictures.
After the event I headed east to add some new-to-me states to my geo-portfolio:  PA, NH, ME, VT, MA, RI, CT, NJ, WV and MD.  I did a six state streak in one day with MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ and PA.  I missed DE on this trip.  I couldn't remember why I had rushed home until I checked back on my eMails to Corny.  I was running out of pills.  Now I just need to geocache in DE and Alaska to make it all 50 states.
Tumblr media
^PA State Game Lands 109: monarch on a milkweed.  This is my favorite of all the pictures I ever took.
I have always wanted to get Dolly a guinea pig.  This summer Dolly started having trouble making it down the RV steps.  She is 12 years old . I thought if not now, then when?    We got Piggie in August - just a tiny little thing!  I admit I love her more than Dolly does.  Piggie purrs when I pet her and since Shorty house-sat for us, she squeaks whenever we open the fridge door!  She looooves bananas and broccoli.

In September, Corny took a solo van trip allaway up to Vancouver!  He watched the filming of some "The Flash" and "SuperGirl" shows.  Here are some of his pictures:

Less than a week after Corny got home, I packed for a hotel trip to Ocala for Finder's Fest.  I hadn't registered because I didn't know if Corny would be back in time.  I just popped in for short periods between caches.  Man I got tired quick!  The weather went from summer hot to winter cool overnight - and what a difference it made.  I think I found 5-6 caches the first hot day, and like 25 the second day when it was 20 degrees cooler.  Again, I’m ashamed to say that I took no pictures.
In October, Shorty and I discovered how flooded Tarpon Springs can be when we tried to go to the Sponge Docks for lunch.  Hurricane Michael was passing by.
All three of us went to early voting.  I was listening to Trump's campaign rallies on YouTube every night - sometimes he did them twice a day toward the end.  After the midterms, he seemed to disappear.  I thought he was probably exhausted, but I sure missed seeing him.  Then I thought he must be depressed and hiding.  Finally I realized he was still the same; the media was ignoring him.  If you want to know what POTUS is up to, you have to check Twitter, Drudge and Politico.  I have no interest in who is running in 2020.  I already know who I'm voting for.
Shorty was off work on Thanksgiving so we celebrated at the RV.  I did a turkey breast in the Crock-Pot.  I made real mashed potatoes, dressing, green bean casserole with lots of real onions, root-beer carrots and pumpkin pie.  By the time it was over, I had to take a nap.  My back was aching.  For Christmas we'll be having homemade pizza with red and green toppings!
Our 20-year anniversary cruise on the Norwegian Epic left from Port Canaveral and stopped at Ocho Rios (Jamaica), Georgetown (Grand Cayman), Harvest Caye (Belize), Costa Maya (Mexico), and Cozumel.  Although there were things we thought were less than perfect, it was a very relaxing cruise.  There was no "Promenade" deck - we have always done lots of laps on previous cruises.  There were two teeny-tiny pools for 6000 passengers.  There was no "central" elevator.  They kept using something on the buffet floor that made it as slippery as ice.  Otherwise, we enjoyed the food, the entertainment, and since we had an inside cabin, we would nap during the day then sleep like babies all night.  At Costa Maya I missed a Geo-event at 9am because we slept till 10:30!

A few days after the cruise we attended a geo-Christmas party with gift exchange/steal.  I loaded a big bag with my camo'ed pill bottles, Harbor Freight swag and random crap from the Christmas box in the basement.  Corny brought home a very nice travel martini kit with shaker and little glasses!  We only know one alcoholic, and they drink wine.
Movies I've seen since June: Oceans 8, Overboard, Hereditary, Book Club, Action Point, On Chesil Beach. Adrift, Deadpool, Tag, Sicario, Incredibles 2, Jurassic World, Won't You Be My Neighbor. Mission Impossible. The Meg, Slenderman, Hotel Transylvania 3, Disney's Christopher Robin, Eighth Grade, Death of a Nation. The Wife, Alpha, Peppermint, Pope Francis, Searching, Predator, The Nun, Crazy Rich Asians. Smallfoot, A Star is Born, Johnny English, Old Man and a Gun, Halloween, Beautiful Boy, Night School.
Life is Godd! We fit out.

King of the Clicks: What Was the Most Popular Home of 2018?
realtor.com
We love looking at all manner of homes—beautiful, weird, massive, tiny, outrageously expensive, or dirt-cheap. But what we enjoy even more is seeing which ones you like looking at. (Creepy, we know.)
Every week, we tally up your interest on realtor.com® listings and report back with the 10 properties you couldn’t resist clicking on.
Now that the year is almost done, we set out to pinpoint the 10 homes capturing the most views for the entire year. Our top home wasn’t a surprise by any stretch of the imagination, but it was nice to see the return of some familiar facades—some of which are still in search of a buyer.
Ready to take a walk down a unique (and expensive) memory lane? Join us as we gaze upon 2018’s most popular homes. Even if you’ve seen them before, we guarantee you’ll want to take another peek.
10. Cerro Gordo, Lone Pine, CA
Status: Sold for $1.4 million in July
Why it’s here: Seeking a little solitude? Look no further than Cerro Gordo, a bona fide ghost town perched 8,000 feet up in the Inyo Mountains in Southern California. This 1867 silver mining camp is credited with providing some of the wealth that built Los Angeles—even if the town was abandoned in the early 1900s when the mines dried up.
The listing for a Lone Pine, CA, camp on 300 acres included 22 buildings—including a hotel, bunkhouse, bar, and cemetery with “substantial numbers of reported hauntings,” listing agent Jake Rasmuson said in June.
Some buildings were restored, but many of them were left in a state of “protected arrested decay.” Although now mainly available for walking tours, the ghost town has been used as a shooting location for movies, including “Iron Man,” Rasmuson said.
The ghostly listing appeared on the market for $925,000, and scared up a ton of interest. It sold way over asking, for $1.4 million, in late July.

9. 5407 Water View Dr, Granbury, TX
Status: Sold in July 2018—price undisclosed
Why it’s here: At first glance, you might be surprised that this modest little number—45 miles outside Fort Worth, TX—made it to the top 10.
Just kidding. Everybody can see why it’s here.
This cozy 800-square-foot home, listed for just $89,900, got a blockbuster boost in views after listing photos surfaced featuring a T. rex doing everyday household activities (e.g., raiding the fridge, lounging on a bed, and mowing the lawn).
Aside from the Jurassic edge, the home features two bedrooms and one bathroom, and is situated on a lake with access to a community boat slip around the corner. (Can a T. rex water-ski?) The dino-mite sales tactic worked wonders, because the home sold in a month’s time.
Pros: Mows the lawn. Cons: Wants to eat you.

8. Beckham Creek Cave Rd, Parthenon, AR
Status: Currently off market
Why it’s here: This rustic estate carved into the side of the Ozark Mountains captured attention for its storied history of renovations. What started as a doomsday shelter was transformed into an A-list nightclub that Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor are rumored to have visited. The cave was then remodeled into a resort that hit the market for $2.75 million.
As far as we can tell, the enormous cave never snagged a spelunking buyer to write its next chapter. Instead, its owners are renting it out to tourists. Talk about a rockin’ vacation!

7. 659 1st St, Woodland, CA
Status: For sale for $3,850,000
Why it’s here: Considered a “work of art,” this gorgeous example of Victorian Italianate architecture north of San Francisco took our collective breath away—and our “most popular” title—when it appeared on the market in April.
Built in 1885 for two pioneering ranchers, the historic home known as the Gable mansion eventually fell into disrepair. In the 1970s, though, it was given landmark status and was painstakingly restored with classic touches like sparkling chandeliers, hand-stenciled wallpapers, stained-glass windows, and hand-decorated ceilings. In the 1990s, the mansion again changed owners, who added a few modern features, including an indoor pool, theater room, an aquarium in the kitchen, and a gym.

6. 1649 Cherry Creek Dr, Waco, TX
Status: For sale for $950,000
Why it’s here: Even though “Fixer Upper” is off the air, we’re still a nation obsessed with it. In Season 2 of the show, renovation gurus Chip and Joanna Gaines worked their magic on this 1976 home, known as the “Faceless Bunker.”
Fans flocked to the listing when the house appeared on the market in June for a staggering $1.15 million. (Waco‘s median home price is $265,000.) Math is hard, so we refuse to do it for you, but suffice it to say there’s a big premium on this 4,113-square-foot home. A little too rich for even the biggest “Fixer Upper” fan’s blood, the asking price has now been reduced to just shy of a million bucks. Will you be the face this TV-famous home needs?

5. 4585 Kiftsgate Bnd, Bloomfield Hills, MI
Status: Off market
Why it’s here: Music lovers everywhere jumped at the chance to peek inside the Michigan Colonial that was home to Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin. Listed for $800,000 just weeks after the singer’s death in August, the gated estate was the first of many properties she owned to appear on the market.
The custom estate, built in 1990, has five bedrooms, 6.5 baths, and more than 4,100 square feet. According to the listing, the home has been pulled from the market, but it may make an encore appearance in the new year.
Bloomfield Township, MI

4. 2851 Marshall Blvd, Sullivans Island, SC
Status: For sale for $4,495,000
Why it’s here: When this dome-shaped house blew onto the market for the first time in May, it grabbed our attention for its one-of-a-kind perk: It’s hurricane-proof! Dubbed “Eye of the Storm,” the 4,000-square-foot home is made of a whopping 600 tons of reinforced concrete and was designed after Hurricane Hugo ripped apart its original owner’s abode in 1989.
While this storm-resistant structure garnered a rainstorm of clicks, buyers have yet to bite. Listing agent Michael Royal is still hopeful he’ll nab a unique buyer for this iconic home.
“I’m trying to connect with the person who really falls in love with it, and sees the work of art it really is,” he said.

3. 924 Bel Air Rd, Los Angeles, CA
Status: For sale for $188,000,000
Why it’s here: The posh Bel Air estate known as the “Billionaire” made a gigantic splash in 2017, when it hit the market for a mind-boggling $250 million—the country’s most expensive listing at the time. For good reason, we guess—it boasts three chef’s kitchens, two fully stocked wine cellars, 135 art installations, three theater areas, an auto gallery, and a helipad with helicopter.
This year, the megamansion was back in the headlines when a cool $62 million was slashed off its price. The shocker? The price reduction was not for a lack of interested buyers. An offer on the home fell through, so the 12-bedroom, 21-bathroom behemoth was relisted for $188 million. A steal, perhaps? We don’t know. We’ll never know. Sad!

2. 450 W Grixdale, Detroit, MI
Status: For sale for $375,000
Why it’s here: This Motor City masterpiece went on the market for $550,000 in March, and the internet went nuts. It’s not hard to see why: One peek inside will blow you away with over-the-top decor, kitschy knickknacks, custom cars, and other collectibles—all of which were included in the original purchase price (which has now been reduced to $375,000).
The intriguing interior is the brainchild of homeowner Ronald Nassar—known by some as Mr. Ronnie—who’s looking to downsize and leave his carefully curated time capsule behind. Will it be your treasure trove?
Detroit, MI

———
1. 11222 Dilling St, North Hollywood, CA
Status: Sold for $3.5 million in August
Why it’s here: This home is a facade. An evocative exterior. A national icon! This ranch-style home captured the memories of a generation of adults who grew up seeing a static image of the place during endless reruns of “The Brady Bunch.”
The interiors of the “Brady” home were filmed on a soundstage, but the actual home, with its memorable exterior—on the market for a brief period this summer—caused clicks to come flooding in.
It didn’t matter that the interior of this house was dated and a bit of a mish-mosh—the crucial element was the outside of the house. Altered a bit from how it appeared in the early ’70s, it was still easily identifiable as the iconic home. So much so that it is reportedly the second most photographed home in America, after the White House.
The immediate popularity resulted in a heated bidding war, with HGTV emerging victorious. The network paid nearly double the home’s asking price, but will recoup its outlay with a series based on the home’s remodel, set to air in 2019. The network’s designers will aim to make the home’s interior match the facade of this memorable TV residence.

Math is hard, so we refuse to do it for you, but suffice it to say there’s a big premium on this 4,113-square-foot home.

4. 2851 Marshall Blvd, Sullivans Island, SC

1. 11222 Dilling St, North Hollywood, CA
