On my second read of Harrow the Ninth, and I'm just highlighting all of the things that catch my attention.
Like this shit that's already happening literally on page 21
😭
Honorable mention from the same page:
Also wondering if anyone else interpreted this as the names of the 200 Ninth children all overlayed on top of each other before we figured out what was actually going on?
I did notice this on my first read, and it drove me crazy the whole fucking time wondering what it meant
ORTUS in a different fucking font 😭
The way Tazmuir uses the format of the printed word to support the storytelling makes me so happy.

On my first read of HtN I interpreted the Canaan House chapters as Harrow's altered memories, as in they were events that had already happened that the narrative was recalling from Harrow's altered perspective. But that's not actually what's happening. These aren't memories, they are events actually being experienced in real-time by the souls of those who died at Canaan House and Harrow in the River. On my second read now I'm thinking more about what this means for Harrow, who is also in the living world. How exactly is she experiencing these events? This line specifically:
got me thinking that she must somehow be experiencing these two realities simultaneously. Knowing what we do now about soul permeability from The Unwanted Guest, this sounds like maybe Harrow is getting some soul-transfer knowledge from Abigail while their souls are together in the River.
Anyway, I'll be keeping this in mind while reading now. I wonder if there's anything else this I missed the first time.

More stuff that caught my eye re-reading HtN:
John quotes The Little Mermaid at Harrow while he's explaining souls and resurrection
This is what immediately follows that quote in the original text:
Makes me wonder if this was maybe some of Tazmuir's initial inspiration for Lyctorhood?
The next chapter about Harrow's early life drives me crazy. So much information, and so little context 😭
Like this clearly has some sort of cultural significance for the Ninth, but there is no elaboration about what that might be. (Is it something Cam, Pal or Pyrrha were aware of when they were naming Nona?? I'm chewing glass)
The Great Aunts making up prayers for baby Harrow:
No wonder she turned out Like That 😭 The poor girl never had a chance.
The way this is brought up so specifically three separate times in this chapter makes me feel like it was an intrusive thought or suicidal ideation Harrow had frequently:
This bit that is just ambiguous enough to make me wonder about how much time there actually was between Harrow opening the Tomb and finally getting caught:
And finally, Harrow's anxieties about the Ninth House being annexed if she asked for help:
Harrow is anxious about the other Houses finding out about the sin of her parents, but if they were to discover that the ancient wards on the Tomb had been broken, her own personal sin would become known as well. Harrow's beloved Holy Corpse is vulnerable specifically because of her own actions. Another thing she must hate herself for.

Harrow's been semi-coherent for like, a day, and Ianthe immediately starts back on her bullshit. Love characters that are actually more awful when they're in a good mood.
(And this severely underrated line)
Also, perhaps one of my most favorite character descriptions ever
Ianthe wants Harrow to do more weird fucked up necromancy on her so bad 😭
Every small insight we get about Ninth House culture makes me insane
This girl who even leaves herself passive-aggressive notes. She's literally talking to her future brain-damaged self the way she talks to Gideon 😂😭

-----
There's an oblique reference to Gideon's abscense at least once in every one of the Canaan House chapters 😭 Nobody haunts the narrative like Gideon Nav 😭
-----
I can't with God making his bestie break up with his boyfriend for him 😂☠
-----
TLT is great because sometimes we get the most epic, dramatic prose ever constructed, and sometimes we get this
It's just...so bizarrely specific. Someone tell me if this is a reference I don't get Lol
-----
The way Tazmuir teases at her worldbuilding makes me insane.
How does he know this?? What implications does this have for the trillionaires who escaped Earth and their descendants??
-----
I am Looking at this line and I am Remembering it and I am Coming Back To It Later
👀👀👀👀
-----
Who???? When???? How????What does that even mean????
-----
Bonus Harrow realizing that she actually hates this guy so so much
