In 1962, Brendon Grimshaw did something many of us only dream of: He bought a tropical island. Moyenne Island lays 4.5km off the north coast of Mahé, the largest of the 115-island Seychelle archipelago. Uninhabited, overgrown, and with legends of pirate treasure, Grimshaw fell in love with the tiny island the moment he set foot on it. It is just 400m long by 300m wide.

Originally from the UK, Grimshaw was working as a newspaper editor in Kenya. Tanzania had just declared independence and Kenya was about to follow. He figured that his job would pass to someone local. At 37, he began considering what to do next. He wanted a life closer to nature and dreamed of owning land in the Seychelles.

Under the guise of a holiday, Grimshaw went to Seychelles to see if there was any way his dream could become reality. After a few weeks, he started to wonder if he had to rethink his plans. Even in the early 1960s, the prices of the few islands for sale were not for the faint of wallet.

Then just before he left for home, a young man in the street providentially asked if he was interested in buying an island. Later that day, they visited Moyenne Island. “It was totally different,” he said many years later. “It was a special feeling. This is the place I’d been looking for.”

So for about $10,000, Moyenne Island became his. If he thought buying an island was difficult, it was nothing compared with what came next.

Moyenne Island harbored a tiny rainforest so dense that falling coconuts didn’t hit the ground. it was impossible to walk across. The island had suffered from neglect. Weeds choked the native plants, and rats scampering through the undergrowth were about the only wildlife.

Grimshaw enlisted the help of a local man, Rene Antoine Lafortune. Together, in a lifelong project, the pair set out to restore the island to be what Seychelles had been before tourism and development. They cut paths through the forest, cleared scrub, and began to plant native trees and plants. Planting became an obsession. Today, Moyenne has over 16,000 trees.

Grimshaw then turned to the next problem: the lack of native fauna. There were no birds, so he brought 10 over from a neighboring island, to which they swiftly flew back. He did the same thing again and thought he got the same result. But then a few birds returned.

Grimshaw and Lafortune began feeding those first avian residents. Slowly, more settled on the island. As the new trees grew and produced fruit, more birds came. Now 2,000 birds live on this little slice of paradise.

Grimshaw introduced one more animal to his island, the giant Aldabra tortoise. After transporting a number of tortoises to the island, he painstakingly cared for them. The species is native to Seychelles but had become locally extinct on many of the islands.

A poster boy for conservationists, Grimshaw painted numbers on their shells so that he could identify them. He then set up a breeding program.

“The babies are kept in my bedroom,” he told the Financial Times in 2008. “If you let them go, you’ll never see them again.”

For these efforts, he was once aptly described as “the reptilian version of a cat lady”. Moyenne Island now has approximately 50 tortoises.

Grimshaw moved to the island permanently in 1972. Over time, he had water, electricity, and a phone line set up. Many thought that this was the start of the island becoming yet another tourist destination.

But that underestimated Grimshaw. He never wanted his island to become a resort. He wanted it to turn it into a nature preserve. Before his death in 2012, he turned down multiple offers to buy the island. Once, a Saudi prince reportedly offered him $50 million for it.

Grimshaw lived on the island for the rest of his life, but he was not always alone. When his mother died in 1981, he invited his father to come and live with him. He was both thrilled and surprised when his 88-year-old dad agreed.

“We had a wonderful time together and became the best of friends,” Grimshaw said. His father died five years later and was buried on the island, next to the grave that Grimshaw had already dug for himself.

Even after his father passed away, Grimshaw was not alone. Lafortune also stayed on the island. He brought a few stray dogs back to the island, and they allowed day-trippers to visit from Mahé for a small fee. With no jetty, visitors had to wade onto the island’s white sands, where Grimshaw met them. In 2010, a film crew also visited the island to make a documentary, below, about Grimshaw and the work he had done.

In 2007, Lafortune passed away. Grimshaw, now 81, knew that he too had limited time left. Unmarried and with no children, he had no one to take on the custodianship of the island. He set up a perpetual trust and signed an agreement with Seychelles’ Ministry of Environment. His island became Moyenne Island National Park, the world’s smallest national park.

When Grimshaw died in 2012, he was buried next to his father. As requested, his tombstone reads, “Moyenne taught him to open his eyes to the beauty around him and say thank you to God.”

The tropical island nation of Seychelles is to create two huge new marine parks in return for a large amount of its national debt being written off, in the first scheme of its kind in the world.

The novel financial engineering, effectively swapping debt for dolphins and other marine life, aims to throw a lifeline to corals, tuna and turtles being caught in a storm of overfishing and climate change. If it works, it will also secure the economic future of the nation, which depends entirely on tourism and fishing. The challenge for the Seychelles is clear on the coral reef fringing Curieuse Island, once a leper colony and now a national park. The mass bleaching caused by warming waters in 2016 has left the white limbs of branching corals lying like bones in a ploughed graveyard, with rare flashes of the cobalt-blue coral survivors.

The biggest changes are climate change, says David Rowat, a marine scientist and diving school owner for 30 years, who says storms and bleaching events are becoming more frequent. Some clownfish have never returned since the major bleaching in 1998, he says: The nemos all went. As the reef recovered, the 2016 bleaching was a kick in the teeth, Rowat says.

The biodiversity jewel in the Seychelles crown is the Aldabra archipelago, which rivals the Galapagos in ecological importance. Spinner dolphins, manta rays, humpback whales and nurse, lemon and tiger sharks share the waters with hawksbill and green turtles, and seabirds from some of the worlds largest colonies soar above. Dugongs – or sea cows – are the most endangered species in the Indian Ocean and shelter here, while 100,000 rare giant tortoises slowly roam the land.

The new protected area around Aldabra is 74,000 square kilometres – almost the size of Scotland – and bans all extractive uses, from fishing to oil exploitation. The second new protected area is 134,000 sq km, centred on the main Seychelles island of Mahe. It allows controlled activities but is, for example, banning fish aggregating devices rafts that concentrate fish but drive up bycatch.

Together, the parks cover 15% of the Seychelles ocean and the government will double this by 2021, putting it far ahead of an international target of 10% by 2020. The parks resulted from the first ever debt-swap deal for marine protection in which $22m of national debt owed to the UK, France, Belgium and Italy was bought at a discount by The Nature Conservancy (TNC), the NGO that has assisted the Seychelles.

TNC also raised $5m from donors to pay off part of the debt and cut the interest rate charged to the Seychelles government on the outstanding loan. This has freed up $12m over the next 20 years to help implement the new marine plan.

The Seychelles is positioning itself as a world leader in ocean governance, says environment minister, Didier Dogley. But we are not doing this because we have such a great ego but because we truly believe these initiatives will create prosperity for our people, conserve critical biodiversity and build resilience against climate change.

Leonardo DiCaprio, whose foundation donated $1m towards funding the debt swap, said: These protections mean that all species living in these waters or migrating through them are now far better shielded from overfishing, pollution, and climate change.

Benot Bosquet, environment practice manager at the World Bank, which is not involved in the Seychelles marine plan, said: They are a leader in this field worldwide and may be an example for many other countries.

However, despite the biggest consultation since the Seychelles nation was founded, some islanders have not welcomed the new plan. On Praslin island, as he unloads his catch of job fish and white spotted snappers onto Grande Anse beach, fisherman Richard Bossy, says: We are worried. They want to make a lot of regulated areas where we cant fish. Fishing is already harder and we are going to lose a lot. If there is not enough enforcement, it will never be implemented.

Leroy Lesperance, who charters glass-bottomed and game-fishing boats to tourists on Praslin, is also sceptical the plan will become a reality: I am 44 and I have heard this talk since I was at school.

But others have bought into the idea, including Graham Green, a young fisherman at Baie St Anne on Praslin: If the fish are protected where they are spawning, Ive heard they will get bigger. We need to do it if we are going to be catching fish in 20 years.

Green expects the benefits will take perhaps five-10 years to be realised, but sees it as an investment: You couldnt start a business today and be a millionaire tomorrow – if you could everyone would be a millionaire.

Another challenge to the marine plan is a controversial new military base planned for the island of Assumption, about 20 miles from the Aldabra atoll and to be paid for by India. One well-informed source, who asked for anonymity, told the Guardian: I am worried that it could damage the biodiversity of Aldabra. We are talking about big ships coming in to berth. That implies pollution and the dredging of channels, which can cover corals in silt, he says.

The Assumption saga will certainly test the credibility of the marine spatial plan process, says Keith Andre, from the Fisherman and Boat Owners Association.

But Seychelles vice-president, Vincent Meriton, says the military base will have to pass environmental assessments and will actually benefit protection, by enabling better surveillance around the isolated Aldabra archipelago: This facility will allow us to better monitor. It augurs well.

Meriton also says the Seychelles will need to use new satellite surveillance programmes that use machine learning algorithms to detect the tell-tale movement patterns of fishing boats, already in use in some parts of the Pacific.

Oil exploration is another dilemma for the Seychelles, which could be sitting on world-class reserves, according to Patrick Joseph, CEO of PetroSeychelles, a state-owned company. It has given up some high-priority prospects, such as the Wilkes seamount which is now in the Aldabra protection zone.

But, pointing to the revisions to the plan expected every five years, he says: If the price of oil goes a bit higher, there will be companies drilling here in the Seychelles. Andre, pointing to the possibility of seismic surveys in the protected zone around Aldabra, says: The nature and impacts of these activities contradicts the authenticity of the entire process.

Many of the details of exactly what is allowed in the protected zones could not be finalised until the areas were selected and are still being worked out, meaning many difficult negotiations still lie ahead. It is a chicken and egg situation, says Helena Sims, TNCs project manager in the Seychelles. But we have built trust from the bottom up and if we keep that and are transparent I am positive our targets can be met.

The Seychelles debt swap is a vital test case for this new way of funding ocean conservation. Rob Weary at TNC did the deal and expects to close a $60m debt swap deal with Grenada this year and a series of others in the Caribbean in the next couple of years. Mauritius also has serious interest.

Despite the election of Donald Trump scuppering for now planned swaps of US debt for Palau and the Marshall Islands in the Pacific, Weary is confident debt swaps for marine conservation are going to grow: In the next three to five years we could potentially do a billion dollars of these deals. We have a sight line to that.

All eyes are on us to see whether it works, says Sims. The Seychelles, which is 99% ocean, will have gone from 0.04% to 30% protected area in a few years if it does.

Questions, such as oil exploration, remain. But environment minister Dogley says: We dont have answers for everything now but the marine spatial plan has started the process of thinking about these things – before we were not. The debt swap triggered everything.

Language: The Seychelles actually has three official languages: French, English, and Seselwa. When you overhear locals chatting, it’ll usually be in their French-based creole language, Seselwa. Most people are actually trilingual(!), and you’ll rarely have trouble finding people who speak English.

Currency: Seychelles rupees (SCR). $1 USD will give you 13.50 SCR.

Credit Cards and Banks: It’s good to have a mix of currencies. Many tourist spots prefer dollars and euros, so keep some of your own cash and exchange some for Seychelles rupees. Depending on your bank, you’ll likely get the best rate withdrawing rupees from an ATM, but you’ll also find banks and official exchange offices all over.

Voltage: The Seychelles uses three-pin UK plugs.

Climate: The Seychelles has a dream climate. The temperature rarely goes below seventy-five degrees Fahrenheit (twenty-four degrees Celsius) or above eighty-nine degrees Fahrenheit (thirty-two degrees Celsius).

Conditions for swimming, snorkeling and diving are best during March through May, October, and November, plus those are off-peak months.

Food: All over the Seychelles, you’ll find creole food made from Asian staples with European flair. Think rice, veggies, and tons of fresh fish. As you’re making plans to eat your way across the islands, keep in mind that a lot of places are closed on Sundays, so come prepared.

Water: Tap water in the Seychelles is safe to drink, but it’s pretty heavy on the chlorine, so many people opt to drink bottled water. If you are there during the summer, you might also find that the water gets turned off for a few hours a day in an effort to conserve.

Getting to Seychelles: When you arrive, you’ll fly into Seychelles International Airport in Mahé. This is the main airport and the hub for Air Seychelles, which is the local airline.

Getting between Islands: You can opt to island hop by ferry or airplane. Depending on the time of year, you’ll find two to three ferries between Mahé and Praslin. In the morning, there’s also a direct ferry from Mahé to La Digue.

In the evening, the ferry goes from Mahé to Praslin to La Digue. If you prefer to fly, Air Seychelles operates regular flights and has prices comparable to the ferry.

Getting around on the Islands: In Praslin and Mahé, it’s handy to rent a car, or grab a taxi, but you can also get around by bike. In La Digue, your easiest option is to travel by bike (although I’ve heard there are a few taxis on the island). You will find buses all over the islands, and they can be a fun experience. They aren’t a quick way to get around, however, and you can’t bring luggage on board.

This is the main island and home to the capital city, Victoria. You’ll fly into this island and it’s definitely a place worth spending some time. There are stunning beaches and lush rainforests alongside the country’s top accommodations, shops, restaurants.

Sainte Anne Island

Just two and a half miles off of Mahé, Sainte Anne Island was the first stop on my Seychelles yacht cruise. It’s the largest island in the must-see Sainte Anne Marine National Park, and the beaches here are amazing.

Cerf Island

Part of the lovely Sainte Anne Marine National Park, this tiny island has a population of fewer than 50 people. It’s a quiet, peaceful spot with a few overnight accommodations.

Cousin Island

Cousin Island is a special place. It is a Special Nature Reserve, and it’s ideal for exploring mangroves and the dense tropical forest. It’s also a bird-watching heaven.

Curieuse Island

The harbor of Curieuse Island is filled with hundreds of giant parrotfish, and the landscape is breathtaking. In addition to Praslin, coco de mer palms grow on Curieuse as well. The island is also known for its giant tortoises, which took me back to memories of my Galápagos cruise.

Aride Island

Aride Island is one of most important seabird habitats in the Indian Ocean, and there are more species there than on any other island in Seychelles. But, you’ll be surprised to know that the island is very small, only 1 mile long, and the population consists only of rangers, conservation officers and volunteers.

Bird Island

Another sanctuary island, Bird Island is the perfect place to take in the local flora and fauna while you explore the wild beaches and turquoise water.

What to Do in the Seychelles

Snorkel: You can’t go wrong here. The snorkeling is incredible everywhere, especially at La Digue.

Golf: The Seychelles is a beautiful spot for golfing. Whether you are a pro or a total newbie, get to Praslin for a few holes.

Shop: There are lots of small shops in Mahé at Baie St. Anne and on La Digue in the Passe area. You’ll find tons of little seashell trinkets and other sea-inspired souvenirs and local handicrafts.

Curieuse Island: Just a quick boat trip from Praslin Island, Curieuse Island is home to giant aldabra tortoises.

Hiking: The Morne Blanc trail out of Victoria (Mahé) is a great spot to snap some photos. Start early in the day, and take your time exploring.

Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve: The Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve on Praslin is one of the Seychelles’ two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and it’s the place to see the world’s largest seed from the famous coco de mer palm.

Beaches: Of course, the beaches are incredible here. Anse Source D’Argent Beach on La Digue is the most photographed beach in the world. Anse Lazio on Praslin Island and Anse Intendance in Mahé are insanely beautiful as well.

Le Jardin Du Roi Spice Garden: In Mahé, you’ll find an old French colony house on top of a hill. Wander through the lush gardens, smell the cinnamon trees, and visit the museum. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, check out the restaurant, and grab some homemade jams and spices from the gift shop.

Kayaking: One of the best views of the Seychelles is from the water! Spend at least one afternoon at sea.

Take a Cruise: A common way of getting around the islands is by cruise ship or yacht. I explored on board the Crystal Cruises’ Esprit Yacht!

Helicopter Rides: Of course, the greatest view of all is from above. The flights out of Praslin will give you an unforgettable view of the islands.

Coco Islands: A popular spot for snorkeling and diving, the Coco Islands by ferry from La Digue is the perfect place to take a day trip.

MBLG Event #10: Royal Melbourne Zoological Gardens Safari Sunday, 12 March 2017 The Royal Melbourne Zoological Gardens, commonly known as the Melbourne Zoo, opened in 1862 and was modelled on London Zoo. It contains more than 320 animal species from Australia and around the world. The zoo is 4 kilometres north of the centre of Melbourne. I’ve always had a ‘thing’ about zoos. When I was 15, I got a weekend job at the Melbourne Zoo working in the cafeteria. My job was to clear the plates off the tables, but within a couple of months I had climbed all the way up the corporate ladder to cooking hamburgers and driving the electric hurdy-gurdy around the zoo grounds. Like many other youngsters, at the time I was interested in becoming a zoologist, and any work this close to animals was a thrill for me. My half hour lunch breaks were spent observing the animals in their enclosures, and being intrigued with the things they got up to. A particularly memorable image I still have is watching the mating ritual of the Cape Barren Goose. At 15, this was a very interesting subject. Come to think of it, some things never change. Anyway, it must’ve been spring because the gander was all over the goose like a rash. Not that she minded much. In fact, she was being ever so co-operative. Then I saw it. It was pencil thin, and about 4 inches long. And it was moving around like a snake stalking its prey. Pink, and stiff and definitely on a mission! I was almost in shock. Up until that moment, I never knew birds had penises. I guess the subject had just never come up before (pardon the pun). That was in 1970. It was only recently that I discovered that geese (along with ducks, swans and large flightless birds like emus and ostriches) were the only birds with penises. Incredibly, this was only 3 percent of the total 10,000 bird species in existence. Nevertheless, today I was going to see a very different zoo. I arrived just after 9am. Melbourne Zoo is open from 9am to 5pm every day of the year and in summer (27 January – 11 March) it’s also open from 5.30pm to 7pm for Twilight Music Concerts. Parking spaces are limited around the zoo, so I was determined to get there early. I had heard horror stories about parking inspectors issuing 544 fines ($93 each) in just 2 hours in the Elliott Avenue Car Park, directly in front of the zoo. This put a damper on the otherwise generous parking rate of only $2 for five hours. My parking space ticket assured me that I would be safe until 2.10pm. The ground was still wet from an earlier shower, but it was warming up quickly and the sky was a clear baby blue with very few clouds. I hoped I had seen the last of the rain today. In an effort to brighten up the original, historical, but somewhat drab external appearance of the zoo, most of the palm trees and bollards in front of the zoo entrance were dressed in orange and black crocheted sleeves. About twenty people were queued up to get tickets, but they were all in the Members queue. The Visitors queue was empty. The zoo members were obviously aware of the advantages of getting to the zoo early… maybe a case of once bitten, twice shy. Ticket Prices were: Adult: $32.50 Seniors: $29.30 Concession: $24.90 Kids (under 16): FREE on weekends I hate wandering around aimlessly, so as soon as I entered the zoo I sat down at a table to plan my ‘course’. By 9.30am I was ready. I was going to go straight up the middle of the zoo, all the way to the back, then check out all the enclosures in the top end: first to the left, then to the right. As I walked through the zoo I was impressed by how clean and tidy it was. Not only that, but it was also beautifully landscaped. The food shops, souvenir stalls, rest areas and information buildings were designed to blend in with the environment… mostly built from natural wood. Even the toilets blended nicely into the surroundings. Thankfully, once inside, they were very normal and clean toilets. Having a bush toilet here would’ve been going a little too far! All around me I was surrounded by plush green lawns, bushes and towering trees. Best of all, the enclosures looked very much like the animals’ normal habitat. The animals looked happy and relaxed, with more than enough space to exercise and even rest out of sight if necessary. So, if you approached an enclosure and found it ‘empty’ you could usually wait patiently for a couple of minutes and be rewarded with a star appearance. At 10.30am I went to see the Giant Tortoise presentation. The star of the show was Little John, a 200kg Aldabra Giant Tortoise with an 80cm shell (carapace). At about 100 years old, Little John is the oldest animal at the zoo. And he could possibly be there for quite a bit longer. The oldest giant tortoise on record, Adwaita, was also a male Aldabra giant tortoise and died in 2006 (Alipore Zoo, Kolkata, India) at the ripe old age of 255! The Melbourne Zoological Gardens had definitely done their homework and created one of the best zoos in the world. Two of my favourite locations were the Reptile House and the Butterfly House. The Reptile House is a circular roofed building with glass-walled exhibits on both sides of the circular passageway. I liked getting up close to the reptiles to observe and photograph them (without a flash). The enclosures were so perfectly laid out that on many occasions I looked into an enclosure of only half a cubic metre and took ages (maybe a minute or so) to locate the tenant. The Butterfly House was the complete opposite. First of all, it’s a tropical glass house heated to 28 degrees Celsius all year round. Even though butterflies are so small, their enclosure is so big that dozens of people can walk through it at any one time. Butterflies love bright colours, so it was common to see brightly coloured butterflies perched on hats, bags, clothes… even heads and outstretched arms. The adults loved it but, really, this was a children’s paradise! As I was about to leave I noticed the biggest butterfly of all. I just had to photograph it. The butterfly was resting quietly on a leaf beside a 3-year-old who was being held by his father. It was so close that I took a photo of them both together. Then, while his father was somewhat distracted, the young boy turned and saw it. All of a sudden, he reached out and snatched the helpless butterfly off the leaf. As it flapped its wings hopelessly, the father, who had realised all too late what had just happened, began shouting to his son, “No! No! No! No!” Sure enough, the boy let go of the butterfly which fluttered away as if nothing had happened at all. The embarrassed father, however, shot out of the Butterfly House in record speed. It was only then that I realised why so many butterflies seemed to have tattered and torn wings. Not a serious problem for the zoo because over 60 butterflies have been born in the Butterfly House every day for the past thirty years. They’re prolific breeders, laying their eggs on the plants in the enclosure. These are collected by the zoo keepers who transfer them to the small glass Caterpillar House, where they hatch, eat, grow and build their cocoons. They are then moved ‘next door’ to the small glass Pupae Enclosure where they eventually hatch and are released into the Butterfly House to start the cycle again. At 11.45am I stopped to have lunch. I had just seen the seals demonstration which drew a crowd of hundreds of people. It was getting close to the zoo’s peak time (12 noon to 3pm) and the zoo was already teaming with families, many of which were pushing young children in strollers. So I sat on one of the, now empty, stands and had the tuna sandwiches I had made for myself that morning. Luckily, I had also brought a couple of bottles of cordial with me. It was really getting hot so the drinks were quite refreshing. By 1pm my mind went back to my car. At 2.10pm, the parking meter would expire and I could possibly get booked. So I went to the ticket counter to ask if I could go outside and come back inside again. The Ticket Clerk assured me that I could, but I’d have to get a pass from the Entry Attendant. The Attendant stamped the back of my hand and I exited the zoo. Another $2 in the parking metre meant I could now stay in the zoo until 5pm. No need to worry or rush. I still hadn’t seen the gorillas, so I headed for their enclosure. It was massive but, because of the heat, the gorillas lay scattered on the ground in the distance beneath the shade of some trees. Unfortunately, they just looked like big black blobs… so disappointing. Then, by 2pm, I was exhausted. There were only a couple of enclosures I hadn’t visited, but I’d already taken over 800 photos. After resting for a few minutes, I realised that I had reached my limit. So, I got up and left. It was 2.30pm. Waiting for me on the other side of the exit was The Cream Cruiser, a food truck selling jam donuts and gelati ice-cream. I was all hot and bothered so I spoiled myself with a multi-flavoured gelati on a cone for $4.50. I was in my car by 2.35pm and home by 3.05pm.
