😔 thinkin about ripley’s hair between book 1 and book 2..... alternatively titled: ripley and ava are touchstarved lesbians and they are both dumb
She ran a brisk hand over her head, only to be met with short, fine hair. It’s a different feeling from the usual buzz-cut Ripley is used to. Her soft brown hair is much longer than it was when she began her job as Wayhaven’s detective.
In the two months away from Unit Bravo, it’s grown even more—the hair now tickling her ears. It’s a different look for her, vastly different from her years on the force. For the first time in forever, she has a bedhead when she wakes up
Maybe she’d buzz it again and return to the sleek freedom; maybe it’d all return to what life was like before the Agency barreled into her life. Hell, maybe it’d even go back to before Ripley shot the unidentified attacker in the warehouse at the edge of town.
She knew better, though.
What’s the point in wishing for impossible outcomes? Especially when the supernatural presence in her life—and was now quite literally in her blood—would continue plaguing her quiet life in Wayhaven.
She’d have to be honest, not all of it was terrible. There were new people besides Verda and Tina who she could count on. The agents of Unit Bravo were the ones who inevitably helped her defeat Murphy. They had her back, so maybe she couldn’t totally loathe their meddling in her investigations. Perhaps, she could even come to considering them friends rather than acquaintances.
At least, most of them were acquaintances.
One agent in particular seemed to do everything in her power to antagonize Ripley. Whether on purpose or not, the leader seemed to do so much to get under Ripley’s skin. Between undermining her authority and berating her for refusing the Agency’s tests, Agent du Mortain proved to be an unbelievable thorn in her side.
Writing off the agent would make Ripley’s life infinitely easier. After all, Agent du Mortain tore her down at seemingly every turn. Letting go of her hopes in working cooperatively with Unit Bravo’s leader would make her life so, so much easier.
But again, Ripley knew hoping for something she knew would never happen was hopeless.
It was especially useless when the memory of Ava wrapping her in her scarf still set her skin on fire. The crackle of tension between them still unnerved Ripley.
Not to mention the way Ava held her after their run in with Murphy. Then, there was the way Ava’s hands brushed through Ripley’s grown out hair.
For two months, she replayed the hazy memory of Ava’s panicked voice. Ripley could swear she felt her panicked hands smoothing her short hair, even after all this time.
Maybe she could come to appreciate it. The hair or the way Ava touched her, Ripley couldn’t say for sure.
