thinking more about the garden scene, rereading it has just made me want even more for the show to do a "rand and egwene trespassing in the caemlyn palace and meeting gawyn, galad, morgase, and elaida" version of it in early s3! because gawyn is adorable in the book version, but mostly exists as an extension of elayne and a helpful infodumper to explain to rand and the reader what's going on while the other 4 caemlyn characters are carrying the scene.

so in a version of the scene where elayne is not there (as i'd imagine she'd go straight from falme to tanchico, which is pretty nearby, while the rest of the gang could pass through caemlyn in their longer travels), that automatically brings gawyn more into the spotlight and makes him an independent and more noticeable character during that whole sequence. now gawyn alone is defending rand (and egwene) from galad, morgase, and elaida, which would be a strong and memorable first introduction to him as a character. (it would also be a great meetcute for gawene <3 and i'd love to keep the book vibe of gawyn being so kind and friendly to rand and having a huge crush on him when they first meet bc it makes the forthcoming events all the more angsty.)

and in general, the book version of course has elayne as the focal point of the caemlyn sequence, so in the show where the audience already knows and loves elayne from other scenes, an elayne-less caemlyn sequence would be a great opportunity to let the other 4 caemlyn characters shine more. seeing gawyn, galad, morgase, and elaida argue over what to do with these trespassers, without elayne present, would do a lot to shed light on all 4 of them as characters and on the various relationship dynamics between them, which would be really good because the gawyn-elaida dynamic will be key to understanding his role in the coup later in the season (maybe we see him being willing to stand up to galad for the trespassers, but then being kinda cowed and backing down once elaida gets involved), and both gawyn's and galad's relationships with morgase are very central to their individual storylines and motivate a lot of their behavior down the road (more so than elayne, who ofc loves morgase and mourns her death, but doesn't really have those feelings as a main motivator for her behavior).

also, i've gone back to reread the wotseries articles about the shohreh aghdashloo (elaida) and olivia williams (morgase) casting leaks, and uncovered a couple interesting tidbits about the caemlyn filming!

both actresses were spotted on a set that is almost certainly the caemlyn palace (filmed inside a real-life castle with andor's banner hanging up)

wotseries believes that since this set is a location shoot 200 km away from jordan studios, not too much time will be spent there in s3 as frequent shoots there would be inconvenient

this filming occurred in late may 2023 and was for sometime in the first 2 episodes of the season

this all supports my theory of a one-time caemlyn trespassing sequence in approx 3x02! however, wotseries didn't report anything about josha or madeleine being spotted on this set, or about galad's actor or any potential gawyn actors being spotted. but that definitely doesn't mean none of them were there, maybe some or all were but just weren't leaked. on the other hand, i could also imagine maybe there's just one brief caemlyn-set scene of morgase telling elaida to go to the white tower and ask about elayne, and then G&G are introduced later when tagging along on elaida's trip and none of them meet our main characters during this season (or even just gawyn tags along with elaida while galad is instead introduced as a whitecloak in perrin's storyline, though personally i think it's important to galad's story for him to NOT be a whitecloak at first and then become radicalized out of worry for elayne). or it could be that there are multiple scenes in the caemlyn palace but some were filmed on a studio set and this location shoot was only used for a particularly grand room like the throne room or something. many possibilities and such little concrete info to go off of yet!

anyway, overall, i think that first introducing the rest of the caemlyn crew to the audience via their interactions with main characters we already know could potentially be more interesting than introducing them in a vacuum as a totally separate storyline (and indeed, most of the new characters in s2 were introduced via preexisting characters meeting them, iirc). and i think that it would be really great for rand and egwene to get a chance to meet the caemlyn crew before they get tied up in other storylines for the foreseeable future, since elaida and gawyn, in particular, are quite important to both rand and egwene later on (or rather, rand is important to gawyn but not vice versa djkfjg poor gawyn). but only time will tell if i'm onto something here or if i'm way off base!

WoT Re-Read: Eye of the World (part 1)

I've never done a formal re-read of the whole series start to finish but I've re-read the individual books multiple times, out of sequence, especially the first three.

So, I'm at the post-Shadar Logoth point where the group splits up.

This is still probably my favorite section of the first book. We leave Rand's POV, explore the world a bit, and start to shed some of the Lord of the Rings classic fantasy trappings...at least for a bit.

Perrin and Egwene have met Elyas and pissed off the Whitecloaks. Rand, Mat, and Thom have finished their boat trip and now Rand and Mat are about to start their tour as vagabond travelers.

I love this part because, for whatever reason, their trip to Caemelyn left such a strong visual impression on my 12 year-old brain the first time I read the books. Rand and Mat trekking down a long dusty road, trading songs and juggling shows for a room at the local inn. They drift from town to town, haunted by strange dreams and bouts of paranoia, knowing even the most harmless villager could be a darkfriend with a hidden dagger or a poisoned cup.

Meanwhile Perrin is dealing with his wolf stuff, Moiraine, Lan, and Nynaeve are on everybody’s trail, and they’re all slowly circling around to Caemelyn.

Anyway here's a disorganized list of stuff from the previous chapters I loved/found interesting.

- Spoilers Below -

- The Two Rivers in all it’s stubborn, stoic, small-town prudishness.

- Rand dragging his delirious father through the Westwood because everything will be fine if he just reaches Emonds Field and Nynaeve.

- The fact that Nynaeve joins the party by literally chasing them down, showing up in Baerlon fully intent on beating up the mysterious wizard lady who stole her kids.

- Nynaeve comforting Rand at the inn when he talks about Tam and his mom.

- The trippy visuals involved in Min’s viewings and the creepy Ba’alzamon dreams.

- “Sparks, swirling all around you and a big shadow, darker than midnight...the sparks are trying to fill the shadow and the shadow is trying to swallow the sparks.”

There’s also something about the sparks being brighter when they’re all together (I think it comes up in a later book). It’s a really simple but cool visual representing the larger conflict.

- Min in general.

- “I will kill you myself before I let the Dark One have you.” I love a shady mentor and the tension between Moiraine and the Emonds Fielders is great because she’s a good guy but 100% has her own agenda and they know their long-term well-being isn’t her primary goal.

- Moiraine freaking out the Whitecloaks by making herself look super tall.

- The boys doing battle cries because that’s what Lan did. Mat randomly spouting Old Tongue.

- The 180 degree turn around from observant, semi-intelligent, moderately responsible young adults to dipshit teenagers the second Rand, Mat, and Perrin get to Shadar Logoth.

- Thom, in general. His patchwork cloak and big dumb mustache. How he see’s a group of village boys out of their depth with no one to look out for them, knows the smart thing is to mind his own business, and then jumps in anyway and proceeds to become their grumpy, shifty mentor. How he teaches them juggling, flute playing, and handstands.

And then, just before Whitebridge, he tries to convince them to sail to Illian with him and become a traveling folk band or something.

- Actually, the books have several cool mentor dynamics. Rand and Tam, Rand, Mat and Thom. Perrin and Elyas. The complicated push/pull between Egwene, Moiraine, and Nynaeve.

(I might make a bigger post about this when I’m further along.)

- Rand and Egwene’s weird dynamic hits harder after A Memory of Light. Other people have written better posts on some of the themes that might be at play between them and I’m trying to pay special attention to their relationship (and Egwene in general) during this re-read.

(once again, I’ll probably do a longer post on this when I’m further in)

- Padan Fain, Shadar Logoth, Whitecloaks, and the contrast between the epic fantasy, capital E - Evil of the Dark One and the more banal, human evils in the world (paranoia, ambition, zealotry, tyranny).

- Hopper, the wolf who wanted to fly. Perrin’s wolf stuff in general.

- Lan and Nynaeve instantly crushing on each other and not realizing it at all. He’s just impressed by her tracking skills, that’s all.

- Moiraine describing to Nynaeve what happens the first time a wilder touches the One Power and all the little clues in that conversation that completely flew over my head despite multiple re-reads.

- Bayle Domon pointing out the metal spire and waxing poetic about the mysteries of the wider world, how once you get a taste of it you’ll never want to go home again.

There’s a lot of emotional “oomph” for me in the story of these small town kids who had their home ripped away from them. They were just about become adults and start making plans for their lives.

Instead they had this massive change forced on them, most of them will never go home again and each one handles this differently. Nynaeve and Rand both resent Moiraine and stubbornly cling to the way things were and their old identities. Egwene throws herself headfirst into becoming Aes Sedai. Then we see her immerse herself with the Tinkers, dancing with Aram and trying to forget all the terrible stuff that just happened...at least for a little while. In contrast, Perrin starts subconsciously isolating himself because of his wolf stuff but he’s not sure he wants to follow Elyas down the path of hermit/wildman.

Matt’s fully into his paranoid, dagger phase right now but we know where his trajectory takes him and (like Egwene) home has little allure for him once he he gets a taste for adventure.

- All the inns with weird names.

Horror-esque Representations of PTSD in “Recovery”

As our society grows more comfortable with conversations about mental health and the demons that many carry throughout life, it is becoming a well-known fact that the demons our soldiers and veterans saddle on their back during and after combat can be the most deadly of all.

The new suspense-filled indie Recovery does more than offer cheap thrills, it also sheds light on a dark issue: the lack of support for those put through the perils of war when they return. “According to a study conducted by the RAND Center for Military Health Policy Research, less than half of returning veterans needing mental health services receive any treatment at all.” This is an issue that has long gone unsolved and has inevitably led to another issue of self-medication in a variety of methods, causing matters to spiral even further.

Recovery intertwines the two social epidemics of untreated mental illness and drug addiction, painting a picture of our fraught reality, while also foreshadowing a potential future when the pot eventually boils over (mild spoiler: our main character never reallyreceives help that she needs).

The film takes place at a secluded all-female heroin treatment center in the middle of a fierce snowstorm. Stephanie Pearson gives a riveting performance as Ronnie, a young recently admitted addict who has already gone through three tours of Afghanistan in her life and struggles deeply with PTSD, along with self-denial of her illness. Her symptoms include hallucinations and blackouts that often result in violence and a lack of recollection. She is rebellious, impulsive, and quick to pick an argument with anyone in her way.

Her first interactions at the establishment are with Dr. Jessica Barnes (played by Hope Quattrocki), who is stern, yet has a soft spot for Ronnie, most likely due to the fact that her own brother also served and dealt with the after-effects. Ronnie has a series of blackouts resulting in violence during her first days at the center and the head of the facility, Dr. Taylor (Mike Starr) ultimately decides to discharge her but must wait until the police come in the snowstorm. The atmosphere is already tense until mysterious murders start occurring. All fingers are immediately pointed to Ronnie, but things just aren’t adding up in that narrative. Now, let’s get into the meat of it, shall we?

The pros:

The editing had to be my favorite part of the film. There are these infrequent flashes of ominous looking men, most likely from Ronnie’s past military experience, haunting her before she has a violent blackout. If you choose to give the film a watch, the scene where she gets her uniform out truly gave me chills. The directing and editing choices give an authentic moment of blurring trauma-induced imaginings with reality. This happens more than once, with Ronnie’s hallucinations signaling to her that she is in danger, only to have her mind betraying her as she becomes violent with someone innocent.

As said before, Ronnie’s characterization was really well fleshed out and the performance was in tune with her lines. We know her and we understand her. Everyone else’s characters lagged a bit as a result, but I found myself desperately wishing Katherine (Aily Kei) had some lines! She was a phenomenal supporting role as a young woman struggling with addiction all her life and having communication problems so severe that she is almost somewhat mute. Clearly, her lack of lines is necessary given her character, but it was so convincing that I found myself yearning for Aily Kei’s other performances.

Now for the cons:

I really struggled with some of the details of the story. First off, this is not a horror. Yes, there’s blood and gore, but as the horror genre reaches new heights with new thoughts on fear and the psychology of the viewer, this film falls much more in the thriller genre. And though it aims to touch on PTSD and mental health, as well as how these ailments intersect with drug addiction, there is an abundance of unsatisfactory tropes of rehabilitation patients being portrayed as hopeless cases.

The dialogue is lackluster, failing to explain the important background on some of these characters which just leads the way for stereotypes to manifest. In this day and age, we must get deeper with these issues. There is no true depth to anyone but Ronnie.

In conclusion..

Even though the story bored me at points, lines fell flat, and the music was just not the best, the subject matter of Recovery is important and represents a growing disdain for the lack of resources for veterans. Just take a look at the Army tweet that, well, didn’t go so well. If you’re looking for a decent thriller with some dynamic cinematic choices that also connects to relevant social issues, I would give it a watch. Though there is a clear villain in the end, the monster of unchecked PTSD is also a killer here, as well as in reality.
