We really don’t know much about Lucy at all compared to the other characters. Her storylines have all been romantic or about other people. Do you that this is intentional? That it speaks to her character at all? The story of her going to her local bar to be anonymous (alone in a crowd of people) struck me in some sort of way but I can’t pinpoint exactly what I’m trying to express here. ANYWAY. More info about Lucy, please, show!
Hmm this is so interesting anon! I honestly have been trying to formulate a response to this for a while because in some ways I agree with you and in others I don't. I guess what I agree about is that we don't know /that/ much about Lucy and what we do know is more about how she relates to others, whether in romance or friendship. Do I think this speaks to her character at all? In some ways, yeah! Lucy is so bubbly and friendly and sometimes it's easier to just be that friendly person who's there for others than to look inside yourself. I've said this before, but I think Lucy is the type of friend where you could hang out with her and talk through your issues with her and feel super close to her...and then later you realize you didn't talk about her feelings at all.
But at the same time I don't know that I agree that we know less about Lucy compared to others. NCIS: Hawai'i is a plot-driven show so learning about the characters (their motivations, their personal histories, etc.) is kind of secondary. Tbh I think the show has been clumsy in the way it's handled other characters' personal lives. For example, although I thought the stuff about Ernie's dad dying led to some great conversations with Lucy, I also felt like it came out of nowhere and didn't really add much to what we know about Ernie...whereas with Lucy, I feel like although I don't know a /ton/ about her personal life, I do have a really strong sense of who she is as a character, of what motivates her, etc. I actually think I know more about her character than any other character on the show, with the possible exception of Jane. Like, with Jesse I'm like oh he has a wife and kids...he is a dad...? That's p much it. With Kai I'm like he has a strained relationship with his dad?? His dad was maybe not there for his mom but also it's super vague? He has a dog?? Is having a dog character development??
Now, could this be because I'm kind of obsessed with Lucy as a character?? Yes! But I also think the show has given us quite a bit to work with regarding Lucy. We've gotten to see her go through the good the bad and the ugly. And the acting is so great and dynamic that I have always felt like I really /get/ where Lucy is coming from.
With alllll of that said, there is so much more to learn about Lucy. I agree that story about her going to a local bar alone says something about her but that also it's kind of hard to know EXACTLY what it says...maybe that she's lonely or that as bubbly as she is, she still feels out of place. Hopefully the show will continue to build her character bit by little bit! ✌
