Something old, something recycled: Learnings from New York’s Annual Fashion Sustainability Summit
Tumblr media
Did you know that by 2030, the global fashion industry is likely to consume about 118 billion cubic metres of water? That’s enough to fill 48 million Olympic-size swimming pools, according to Pulse of Fashion’s 2017 report. Movements supporting sustainable apparel manufacturing and circular economies are now gaining traction, and the recently-concluded Annual Fashion Sustainability Summit in New York (on January 31) is a case in point. Organised by New York-based non-profit Slow Factory Foundation, in partnership with the United Nations, the fifth edition brought together notable climate advocates such as actor Yara Shahidi of Black-ish fame, Bonnie Wright from the Harry Potter series, designer-turned-entrepreneur Waris Ahluwalia, and designer Tina Knowles (mother of Beyoncé), among others. They not only highlighted how the rise of the resale market is a hot topic in the fashion industry, but also looked at experts’ solutions on reversing the damage fashion has caused the planet. Ten percent of our carbon emissions, to be precise. Panelists at the event included scientists, biologists and technology experts who candidly fielded questions from 400 climate enthusiasts about such pressing issues. Here are five learnings from the Summit:
Tumblr media
Meet Mylo
Since its entry in 1941, polyester arguably continues to reign in the fashion industry. No innovative textile has been crafted to take over its popularity or reverse the ecological damage, for that matter. At the Summit, San Francisco-based Bolt Threads — which also creates fabrics for Stella McCartney — proposed Mylo as the breakthrough material that is 100% bio-degradable. “It is made from mycelium, which is the root structure of mushrooms, with fine, thread-like cells. This revolutionary material isn’t animal-based or petroleum-based, but it can be used in the same way as leather [traditional and synthetic],” says founder Dan Widmaier, who previously launched microsilk, made from spider silk protein.
Not just textiles
About 300 million pairs of shoes end up in landfills every year. Committed to tackle the issue is French sneaker brand Veja. “When we started in 2004, our goal was to deconstruct the production of the sneaker,” says co-founder Sebastian Kopp, who launched its limited-edition collection last month (in New Delhi) in collaboration with Anand Ahuja’s multi-brand store, Veg-Non-Veg. “We didn’t know a lot about making sneakers then and we chose to go to Brazil and ask questions. The first was, ‘What is canvas?’ It is cotton, a plant that uses almost 2% of the world’s agricultural land.” For Kopp, who also makes sneakers out of fish leather, opting for organic, fairtrade cotton from farmer associations in Brazil and Peru was not an ecological act. “It was normal to try to do something better.”
Tumblr media
Embrace circularity
Like most industries, the take-make-waste model or the linear economy is also prevalent in fashion. According to the Ellen McArthur Foundation, which champions circular economy, only 1% of all textiles get recycled every year. Speaking about how adidas is trying to change consumer behaviour, Ayesha Martin, director of Global Purpose at adidas, says, “The test run for the FutureCraft.Loop shoes, made from a form of thermoplastic polyurethane, involved consumers returning used products for recycling. Some didn’t, so we have to work towards shifting mindsets,” she says. To be launched commercially next year, buyers will keep getting a ‘new’ pair if they return the old. By 2024, the sportswear brand is committed to using only eco-friendly elements in their products.
Voices from the Summit
Bonnie Wright, actor and advocate: “I love my socks from [Washington-based] Arvin Goods because they use only recycled cotton and next to no water in their production process. Whereas an average pair of socks uses about 50 gallons of water.”
Yara Shahidi, actor and advocate: “Whether it is social justice or racial equity, they are starting points to realise how much more there is to be passionate about. I am intentional about whom I choose to collaborate with. What I love about adidas is that it is one of the only teams where we haven’t had to ask about their plans to be part of the climate conversation.”
Waris Ahluwalia, designer and actor: “If we are not balanced as individuals, then how is the planet going to be balanced? It was one of the reasons why we started House of Waris Botanicals — looking at plants, starting from the source, trying to get ourselves balanced before we can have an impact on the planet.”
Quit wish-cycling
Wish-cycling (when your expectation of recycling a material exceeds the ability of the recycling facility) can start with good intentions but you might be doing more harm than good. “Any sort of paper that has a foil attached to it [like coffee cups] are not recyclable. If you want to recycle a food container, you have to clean it,” says Jay Kaplan, Environmental Manager, at New York-based environmental solutions company, Waste Management. “It rings true especially when most of us are guilty of throwing our stained pizza boxes in the recycling bin thinking it would magically turn into another pizza box.”
Conscious washing
Turns out, your washing machine is where most of the microfibres in the ocean come from. “The tiny particles made of polyester, rayon or other synthetic textiles do not get filtered in the machines, which has led to the textile industry contributing to about 35% of microplastic pollution,” says scientist Marco Tedesco. What happens next? The plastic debris flows into our water stream, and then the ocean, to finally end up in our food chain. While doing less laundry can lessen the number of microfibres flowing out, US-based MojaWorks’ microfiber filters and laundry balls (that catch the lint) are other solutions. ₹4,061 onwards on amazon.in

Sonam K Ahuja on Anand S Ahuja: “I knew he was the love of my life”
Tumblr media
Two years ago, after two months of conversations that began on Facebook and Snapchat, and progressed to late-night phone calls, Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja decided it was time they met. The sole agenda was to see if the camaraderie and niggling romance developed over two continents could survive the daylight glare of an actual meeting. Sonam chose London, since Anand lived there and she had a fitting with designers Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo in the city prior to her Cannes appearance. The two were to meet in the afternoon, but excitement and apprehension meant patience was in short supply. So, they met immediately—he in his gym clothes, she in “gross” trackpants and tee. They spent the entire day walking around London, talking. And exactly two years from that day, they wed in Mumbai.
I meet her shortly after the wedding, and Sonam, her hands still bearing traces of the henna, is dressed in a yellow tee printed with the ideals of the French Revolution. She recalls her first date, “I was apparently wearing the worst sneakers he had ever seen. I keep telling him that he fell in love with me despite my bad sneaker game… That day, walking and talking in London, I knew he was the love of my life. He apparently knew the first time we spoke on the phone… It was just so easy.”
TWO WORLDS
She’s the National Award-winning actor known for her roles in films like Neerja (2016) and Aisha (2010), and the country’s best-known style ambassador. He is the founder of clothing label Bhane and sneaker store Veg Non Veg (and had no idea Sonam and Anil Kapoor were related). She likes fiction, film and dancing. He likes basketball, sneakers and philosophy. They’re both vegetarians, die-hard homebodies, outdoor-lovers and morning people. She’s now Sonam K Ahuja, he’s now Anand S Ahuja. “He makes clothes—and I wear them!“ she laughs with a rainbow-arch hand flourish of a magician doing a reveal. “He comes from a business background, so that’s alien to me. I’m the third generation in a film family. So there’s a lot to talk about, a lot to discover about each other, but we have a lot of similarities.”
When I speak to him later, Anand recaps the early days of their friendship: “The first time we met, we talked about our respective work. I was just struck by the fact that I could speak to her so openly about everything. We were chatting on Snapchat one night and she said, ‘Stop texting, just call me.’ And we spoke for two hours that night… Our friendship started over superficial things like vegan chocolates and sneakers but soon we were having deeper conversations.”
Theirs was a wedding that broke Instagram, a multi-event affair that both surprised and satisfied the curiosities of those witnessing it, on-ground and virtually. There were the guests, the flash mobs and dance-offs (all recorded by enthusiastic wedding-goers), and, since it’s Sonam, the trousseau.

RUNWAY BRIDE
After all, she’s India’s fashionista—her work wardrobe on any given day oscillates from Maticevski and Ashi Studio to Anamika Khanna and Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, often combining avant-garde and high drama with classic. For her wedding lehenga, though, tradition trumped all; the red-gold creation in Maheshwari silk designed by Ahmedabad-based Anuradha Vakil was the stuff heirlooms are made of. “I’ve known Anuradha for many years. She’s a good friend of my mom. I fell in love with her clothes, so I’d asked her to design for Saawariya—probably the only film she’s ever done or will do. I don’t know anyone who understands Indian garments, textiles and embroidery as she does. I’d always tell her, ‘You are going to make my wedding lehenga. When—and if—I get married, you will.’ And I didn’t forget that,” adds Sonam.
Sonam told Vakil she loved lotuses, so the designer translated them into motifs embroidered in gold and silver thread. Since Anand, who plays basketball, can’t wear rings, New York-based tattoo artist Keith ‘Bang Bang’ McCurdy got him a version of the wedding ring—a tattoo on his ring finger.

While sisters Rhea and Sonam have always collaborated in creating her statement-making looks, Sonam styled herself for the wedding. Anamika Khanna, Shehla Khan, Masaba, Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla… her style followers on Instagram weren’t surprised by the choice of labels she picked for all the functions. “While they’re all extremely talented people, I chose them because there was an emotional connection with each of them,” she adds.
Every detail of the wedding, she points out, was planned together by the couple. The Jo Malone-scented spaces, the jewellery (collected over the years, inherited, or designed by childhood friend Tarang Arora of Amrapali), the couple’s initials on her Jimmy Choo accessories, their sun signs on the mangalsutra, the foliage-print wallpaper that matched the wedding invite, her Gaia Repossi promise ring where no diamond resembles the other… She shows me up close her engagement ring that Tarang Arora designed—a mellow Golconda diamond in a gold setting, more liquid and citrine-esque than blinding. “I didn’t want a big fancy diamond. I wanted something that I wouldn’t feel embarrassed to wear all the time, I didn’t want something loud or showy. Anand sourced the stone—he loves saying it. He says it’s a meetha colour. It’s a little yellow, so it looks old and pretty.”
LOVE, ACTUALLY
It’s all quietened now, but there’s been no time to sit still and savour. Two days after the wedding, Sonam flew to Cannes, wowing us in voluminous Vera Wang and Ralph & Russo, while upon her return she’s been touring to promote Veere Di Wedding with her co-stars. Amidst this is a new pad in London’s Notting Hill that the couple is furnishing with Mumbai architect-designer Rooshad Shroff. “It’s nice making a home together. Anand is so encouraging when it comes to my work that he didn’t blink when I told him I was flying to Cannes two days after the wedding or that I was getting into promotions straightaway. There was no argument, just acceptance—you gotta do what you gotta do. But he posed one question to me: ‘If it was me who had to go to a work meeting right after the wedding, what would you do?’ I said I’ll kill you. So he’s like, ‘I think it’s double standards!’” she laughs.

BETTER TOGETHER
As two people who spend a lot of time together, have they rubbed off on each other in a way that couples do, widening the common ground in both interests and personalities? “He’s non-judgemental—with everybody. Very open-minded and progressive. I’m a little conservative and close-minded about a few things, and he’s taught me to see the other side, to look at things with a lot more compassion and care, to be a little more pragmatic and practical, as I can be very emotional and quick to judge sometimes, which is not nice,” Sonam ponders.
Anand, true to form, sees the other side in this, too. “She gives me a lot of confidence. Sonam’s very black and white. She knows what’s wrong and what’s right, and is not afraid to say it. I can see both sides of a story, but I often get stuck in the grey zone. I sometimes need to be able to say no, and Sonam gives me the confidence to do that, she supports me. She’s intuitive and patient, I second-guess.”
Once vaguely acquainted with Bollywood, he’s now seen all her films. And, while he acknowledges the brilliance of her performance in Neerja, he’s a little partial to Aisha and Khoobsurat. “Aisha, because that’s what people know her, as this amazing fashionista, and Khoobsurat because that’s her personality—that’s the Sonam I know.”

How cool is Sonam Kapoor way to declare her favourite Anil Kapoor movie
Tumblr media
How cool is Sonam Kapoor way to declare her favourite Anil Kapoor movie After their grand store launch of Bhane and Veg Non-Veg in Mumbai yesterday, Sonam Kapoor and hubby Anand Ahuja are on their way to Delhi we believe. After impressing the residents of Delhi, Anand thought it was time Mumbai gets its own Bhane and Veg Non-veg store and Bandra was just the right location for them. After working hard for over a year, Anand and his partner Abhineet Singh finally inaugurated their new store and they hope Mumbai falls in love with it. While Sonam was busy cheering for hubby and his brands all this time, guess its time she flaunted her love for her daddy dearest. The Neerja actress was clicked with hubby at the Mumbai airport and while their subtle PDA was too cute for words, it was her t-shirt that grabbed all our attention. Just how cool is Sonam’s t-shirt that reads ‘Mr India’! Now we don’t need to tell you Mr India is a very special movie for the entire Kapoor family and even we love it equally. The very famous ‘Mogambo khush hua’ dialogue is still so fresh in our minds and hearts alike. Sonam’s too shares our fascination for this cult film and her t-shirt is a proof of it. Just in case she doesn’t mind, we would like to know where did she shop it from. There were reports that Boney Kapoor is planning a sequel to Anil Kapoor’s Mr India and Salman Khan would play the antagonist in the film. However, the project never really progressed and got shelved eventually. If the makers will try to revive the project is a question we can’t answer. But what we know is the fact that Mr India is Sonam Kapoor’s favourite Anil Kapoor movie. How cool is Sonam Kapoor way to declare her favourite Anil Kapoor movie Read the full article

Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja to have a May wedding in Geneva?
It has been three months since the news of Sonam Kapoor’s tying the knot with her businessman- boyfriend of over two years, Anand Ahuja first floated on social media and the rumours refuse to die down. While earlier reports suggested that Sonam and Anand would be tying the knot in April in Udaipur, latest news suggests that the two have zeroed in on Geneva as their preferred destination for the D Day.
Also see: Sonam Kapoor spotted jewellery shopping in Kolkata Sonam and Anand were still looking for an ideal destination when the actress, who is the brand ambassador for a luxury Swiss watch manufacturer, was in Geneva in January decided that the city was a picture-perfect venue for her wedding. The 32-year-old actress is set to tie the knot over a two-day ceremony on May 11 and 12 in Geneva.  A source from the wedding planner’s team told Mumbai Mirror, “The date and venue for the wedding have been locked and mass bookings for flights are presently underway. Her dad Anil Kapoor is personally making phone calls to invite guests. There will be sangeet and mehendi ceremonies, followed by a traditional Hindu wedding.” The couple has embarked on multiple holidays together, be it their vacations in London or New York.  The duo has always shared pictures on their social media which actually got the people talking about there relationship.  Last May, Anand stood alongside Anil and Sunita Kapoor to cheer on as Sonam received the National Award for her role as Neerja Bhanot in Ram Madhvani’s directorial movie Neerja. Anand Ahuja is a Delhi based businessman who owns the multi-brand sneaker boutique Veg Non-Veg. He is also the CEO/Founder of Bhane, an apparel brand.  On Valentine’s Day this year, Sonam exclaimed that she was “the luckiest girl in the world”, sharing pictures of a red rose bouquet from her soon-to-be husband.
“I can see myself in all things and all people around me.” MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄 “A lot of different flowers make a bouquet.”

The source further added, “The nuptials will be preceded by an engagement ceremony attended by the family’s inner circle, but the venue for that is presently not known.” According to fashion industry sources, Sonam has already entrusted family favourites Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla (who dressed her up for a recent wedding show) and close friends, Brit designer duo Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo, with her wedding wardrobe. While they have never officially spoken about their relationship, Sonam and Anand's PDA on Instagram tells a different story. The couple made their relationship public via Instagram on Anil Kapoor’s 60th birthday celebration in London in December 2016, with the extended Kapoor family welcoming Anand into their family.
