Has anyone discussed the weird orientalism in the way the Middle Kingdom owls are portrayed

#guardians of ga'hoole #gog #don’t get me wrong but I highly appreciate the way Lasky handles topics like book banning/fascism/cults etc. #but the way the Middle Kingdom is written gives me whiplash lmao #it could have been a good chance to introduce some owl species native only to Asia and a good way for the Guardians to realize that there’s #so much of the world they don’t know about #but then it’s like 1) they’re exactly the same species but inexplicably blue #2) they seemingly only exist there because Theo of the northern kingdoms settled there #and 3) half of them. are descended from/reincarnations of demons that owls do not see as deserving of things #me when I read too deeply into a children’s series lol
