thinking back to a museum we went to last week that had a panel saying, and i quote, “punks did not want a better world and they certainly did not want socialism. they just wanted to be left alone to hang about in their colourful hairstyles and ripped clothing”

#this was in a museum about the ddr and so this is all presented in a very different political context to most western punk media #having said that- ‘punks did not want a better world’ ????? #‘to hang about in their colourful hairstyles and ripped clothing’ ????? #punk is Inherently political. it is Inherently active. including in the ddr #and in the ddr it was all about freedom and expression and shock. not being ‘left alone’ #the point was to be seen and to be transgressive #opposing censorship and accessing different thoughts and media than that the government was selling #not just a silly little aesthetic #anyway. the whole museum was a fascinating experience it was more a character study into the translator than a place of historical learning #notes section
