the early Civil War (i.e. pre-Grant as the commander of the Union army) era is such a profound comedy of errors. everyone is so fucking stupid, cowardly, egomaniacal, or some combination of all three (like McClellan). the only reason the war didn't end within a year was because everyone kept fucking up the second they had an advantage, and so it dragged out into 4 goddamn years. good work everyone hit the showers

Jackson was constantly outnumbered he just kept winning bcs the Union generals were legit terrified of him #to be fair Jackson really was a scary opponent in some ways considering nobody ever knew where he was because #his army was probably the fastest moving in the entire war because he'd march them day and night with little to no rest #(part of why he was chronically sleep deprived. he slept a couple hours a night for several months yhknow) #so he'd be miles ahead of wherever they thought he was and he'd just randomly show up #and because nobody knew what his plans were because he literally refused to tell anybody what he was doing #like he'd just make everyone march with him and not explain what they were doing at all until they got there #dude was insane. such a weird interesting dude
