Website Well if you fancy a bit of wildlife & nature then the Kruger national park is a must visit for you, being the largest game reserve in South Africa with an area of 20,000km2(about 6x the size of Lagos). from being the home of Africa’s Big 5: African lions, African leopards, rhinos, African elephants, and Cape buffalos, to offering some of the most enticing views comprising of the waterfalls, rainforest and gorges, so whether you want a safari honeymoon in South Africa, a memorable family vacation or explore the land of the wild solo, then Kruger is the place for you. But here are some important information to note before you plan that trip: -WHEN TO VISIT. Temperature-wise the Kruger National Park has a Sub-tropical climate, which means hot and humid summer and mild winters. The best time to visit the Kruger however would be between April - September which are the dry months that makes for great game viewing in Kruger. While from October – March the Kruger experiences sub-tropical rainfalls which brings full waterholes, lush bushveld, many newborn wildlife and the summer migrant birds arrive. So whatever time you decide to visit the Kruger National Park – you will not be disappointed! -ACTIVITIES. The Kruger National Park is all about spending unforgettable moments in vast expanse of the massive park, untarnished and untouched by civilization. So if you are a sucker for wildlife and nature, there’s a lot for you to explore and experience, from Hiking, safari tours, river and bush walk, camping, sightseeing tours and spotting the Big 5. Here are some of the popular activities you can engage in while in the Kruger National Park. • Game Drives: The game drives is part of what Kruger National park is all about, it involves venturing out on the back of an off-road vehicle, with your binoculars clutched in one hand whilst the other hangs on for all you’re worth to the constantly rolling vehicle as it makes its way through the bush in hot pursuit of the latest pride of lions, sighted feeding on a kill just over the rise, it could be early in the morning, mid-morning or sunset. The drives last around 3hrs, and private lodges and game farms usually include a coffee break, breakfast or sundowners in the bush as part of the game drive experience. • Bush Walk: Nothing beats the thrilling excitement of tracking rhino, elephant and lion on foot through the heat of the bush, it’s also one of the most incredible ways to learn about the fragility of the ecosystems of the Kruger Park and to see the smaller, animals and insects of the park like termites, spiders (if you are frightened by them I’ll advice you avoid the bush walk in the month of February they are literally everywhere!), snakes and plants that tend to be ignored when on the more fast paced game drives. The walks can last up to 5hrs and stops are made to allow replenishment, it is advisable to take your own snacks, and most of the camps do morning and afternoon walks. • Wilderness Trail: There are a few incredible wilderness trails in the Kruger National Park, some in areas virtually untouched by humans like: Metsi-Metsi, Bushmans Wilderness Trail, Nyalaland, Napi Wilderness Trail, Wolhuter and the Sweni Wilderness. Most of these trails are overnights in rustic huts with basic bathing in reed-walled showers and flush toilets. These are aimed at smaller groups and one needs to have a reasonable level of fitness as the journey averages 20km a day, although it is at a leisurely pace. • The Lebombo Overland Trail: This five-day ‘wilderness experience on wheels’ takes you from Crocodile Bridge to Pafuri. It’s an eco-trail that takes you along the Lebombo hills from the extreme south to the farthest northern edge. The ride consist of a maximum of five vehicles, with four people in each (so as not to adversely affect the environment), that covers 500km. It’s a self-drive eco-trail (you drive your own vehicle and cater for yourself) that crosses grand rivers and circles some of the most beautiful scenery in the park (which includes wide open spaces, bushveld and magnificent trees), the trail overnights at different rest camps. Experienced and professional guides lead the trail and interpret the different eco zones and explain the terrain on this trail. • Hot Air Balloon Flights: Balloon flights from hazyview take place very early morning before the earth heats up. The launch site is in the beautiful Sabie River Valley. The balloon may float over fruit orchards and bush, or forests and hills depending on the wind direction, some flights end in the next valley or the one beyond that but whichever direction the flight takes, the view from the sky is breathtaking! The flight will last for an hour and afterwards passengers can rejoin the world of earthbound beings over breakfast at one of the lodges near the launch sites. -PLACES TO VISIT IN & AROUND KRUGER NATIONAL PARK To make extra memories you might consider checking out some of these breathtaking places in and around the Kroger Park. - Crooks Corner Viewpoint: Another attraction in the Kruger National Park region, is the Crooks Corner which is known as the confluence point of the Limpopo and Luvuvhu Rivers where South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe m eet. Today it is also the home of fat baobabs and rivers bursting with hippos and crocs big as dinosaurs. Certainly the place you would want to see on your trip to Kruger. - Blyde River Canyon: One of the legendary geographical structures of South Africa, the canyon is located at The Blyde Canyon Nature Reserve, situated in Mpumalanga and it’s less than an hour drive from Kruger. The fresh mountain scenery and views are quite spectacular and gives the area the moniker ‘Panorama Route’. Making God’s Window the most popular. - Bourke’s Luck Potholes: At the meeting point of the Blyde River (river of joy) and the Treur River (river of sorrow) water erosion has created one of the most beautiful architecture in the world known as the ‘Bourke’s Luck Potholes’ which forms a series of cylindrical rock structures that look as though they would be better off in the moon, It’s no surprise that this place is part of Frommer’s 500 place to take your kids before they grow. - Mac Mac Falls: Located 70km to the southeast of the Kruger is the Mac Mac Falls, the 70m high waterfall is just an hour drive from the Kruger with beautiful scenes to enjoy. -ACCOMODATIONS. Kruger National Park has a large number of rest camps, bushveld camps and lodges and even some overnight hides, all run by South African National Parks Board. But it is the luxurious privately-run game lodges that steals the show when staying in the Kruger National Park, as a trip is transformed into something more like an experience, with your every need catered for and luxury is not spared. All this while in the wild heart of Africa. -ESSENTIALS AT THE KRUGER NATIONAL PARK When planning to visit the Kruger National Park there are a few things that one should pack: * Clothing’s: when packing choose neutral tones and light fabrics, preferably cotton, these fabrics work best in hot climate. And also consider packing light, pack about 3 t-shirt and 3 pairs of shorts. Do not pack white shirts because of the dusts and they make you visible to the animals, also avoid red because they attract animals, and in areas where Tsetse flies are prone avoid blue and black. Here's the "musthaves" to pack for your safari: - T-shirt, shirt or blouse (long sleeves or turtleneck to help protect from the sun and mosquitos). - Shorts. -Fleece or warm jacket. -A pair of safari trousers (khakis or similar) 1 casual skirt for women. -Comfortable walking shoes (or boots) and socks. -Hat or Cap (to protect your face from the sun/dust). -Bandanna or cotton scarf. -Maybe a pair of open sports sandals for general daytime use in warmer month. -Flip flops or similar for pool or in-room use. -Swimsuit. -A casual outfit for dinner. - Sleep wear. -And of course your under garments. * Gears: Besides your usual electronics, a power strip from home is essential so you can plug that into the camp or lodge outlet to charge all of your items at one time. -Remember all of your electronics, camera, extra memory cards, batteries, chargers, and a small flashlight. -Binoculars are ESSENTIAL for optimum wildlife viewing on safari (and a GOOD pair of binoculars will make a BIG difference). -Good quality sunglasses. * Preventative pharmaceuticals (med kit): stuff you need, just in case the worst happens: diarrhea, headaches, heartburn, insect repellent, hand sanitizer, indigestion, sore throat, eye drops, and most important- anti-malarial tablets. TIPS TO NOTE: * Don’t be tempted to feed the animals or try to get their attention/bring them close to your car, feeding the animals could be detrimental to their survival in the wild as they are wild animals. And doing so could get you fined or jailed because it is illegal. * Be prepared for early morning, don’t be tempted to sleep in, and also don’t make your guide wait, if  you’ve arranged to meet them at 5:30 am, your guide has been up since 4:30am and keeping them waiting is just rude. * Cell reception in most part of the Kruger is zero although lodges offer Wi-Fi access, some just in public areas. * Medical insurance is another important part of the trip that can't be ruled out, in case of emergencies and that is why the insurance should be purchased before you leave and it should include emergency air evacuation. Check here to get a quote. *When traveling avoid packing items of value as there are couple of pickpockets around on the streets and in crowded stores, also avoid walking around with things you can't do without, like your passport or airline tickets. *Emergency numbers in South Africa include: 10111(police). CONCLUSION So there you have it, if you are a lover of the wild and nature and you are looking to enjoy Africa for its peaceful combo of both, then Kruger National Park should be a must visit for you.
