people always focus a lot on the emily/sue relationship - with good reason! - but imo one of the most special & endearing things the show did in terms of ~queer rep~ or whatever is the whole concept of episode 3x04. it’s about the fantasy of emily meeting with whitman and finding her community and coming out... restorative storytelling!
i don’t know, and i can’t know, how the real person emily dickinson thought and felt about her queerness - but what’s certain is that she didn’t party in a gay bar in NYC while yelling out loud about her desire & love for a woman. and there is something, yes, bittersweet, for sure, but also so satisfying - dare i say healing? - about the show giving her this particular opportunity for connection and joy and self-love and freedom that she could not have experienced in real life
