Plutôt qu’acheter, et si on louait nos vêtements ?
Venue des Etats-Unis, la location de vêtements a débarqué en France il y a seulement quelques années. Une révolution d’usage qui transforme notre manière de consommer, mais qui reste encore un marché (très) niche dans l’Hexagone.
Selon une étude, 68% des vêtements de notre garde-robe ne seraient pas portés. Et si, au lieu de posséder un vêtement, vous le louiez ? C’est le credo de plusieurs startups qui essayent de bousculer l’industrie de la mode et poussent (certaines) enseignes traditionnelles à s’adapter. H&M, temple de la fast fashion, vient tout juste de lancer un service de location de vêtements dans son magasin de Stockholm. La marque suédoise tente l’expérience pour les clients membres de son programme fidélité qui peuvent louer jusqu’à trois articles par semaine.
En France, c’est Bocage, une marque de chaussures du groupe Eram qui a pris les devants. Depuis septembre 2018, l’entreprise propose à ses clientes de louer une paire de chaussures neuves tous les deux mois, pour un abonnement de 34 euros par mois l’hiver, et de 29 euros l’été. Une fois portées, toutes les chaussures sont ensuite reconditionnées dans leur usine : remise en forme, finitions, hygiénisation. “On constate vraiment des consommateurs en pleine mutation. On a pris de plein fouet la déconsommation et des clientes qui attendent des marques qu’elles s’adaptent”, explique Clémence Cornet, responsable marketing de l’entreprise.PUBLICITÉ
Seul bémol : une chaussure reconditionnée n’est pas relouée, mais finit sa vie en étant vendue à -50% du prix d’origine dans le service d’occasion de Bocage “comme neuves” lancé cette année. “D’ici à 2020, nous avons prévu de proposer une offre de location de seconde main”, poursuit Clémence Cornet. Aujourd’hui, Bocage propose son offre dans une cinquantaine de boutiques et va bientôt développer un service de livraison en ligne. Mais l’entreprise le reconnaît aisément, malgré ses 1.400 abonnées actives, son offre de location ne représente qu’une part infime de ses 55 millions d’euros de chiffre d’affaires.
Un succès américain
Cette petite révolution d’usage est en fait surtout portée par des startups. Aux Etats-Unis, c’est Rent the Runway qui fait figure de modèle et surtout, de success story. Cette licorne (valorisée à plus d’un milliard de dollars) née en 2009, répète à tout-va qu’elle “n’a pas disrupté un marché, mais en a créé un nouveau”. Son credo ? La location de vêtements de luxe pour des occasions précises : soirée, anniversaire, bal de promo, mariage…
Dans l’Hexagone, la plupart des startups se sont, elles aussi, lancées sur la location de vêtements pour des occasions spéciales à l’instar de Panoply qui loue des vêtements de créateurs ou encore des Cachotières, avec des marques de moyenne gamme. Alors que Panoply achète elle-même ses stocks, les Cachotières met en relation des femmes propriétaires de pièces avec des locataires potentiels. La jeune pousse centralise tous les vêtements dans un entrepôt.
“Un moyen plus simple pour nous assurer que les colis envoyés aux clientes sont impeccables. Comme ça, nous pouvons assurer le pressing et les retouches à faire”, explique Agathe Cuvelier, la CEO, qui revendique un millier de clientes et 1.200 propriétaires, pour près de 3.000 pièces à la location. La startup se diversifie et vient de nouer un partenariat en marque blanche avec Bash pour proposer à la location des vêtements de fin de collection ou de surproduction de la marque française.
Louer pour être plus responsable ?
Louer plutôt qu’acheter, une bonne action pour la planète ? Cécile Poignant, prospective et spécialiste des tendances n’est pas convaincue : “Quand je vois les acteurs traditionnels s’intéresser à la location de vêtements, c’est en fait pour s’adresser à des personnes avec une consommation assez excessive, que ces marques essayent de fidéliser par un service de location”, explique-t-elle. Et d’ajouter : “Je suis gênée par le discours soi-disant durable, quand on sait que ces vêtements ne peuvent être portés six ou sept fois avant de se dégrader.” Autrement dit : plutôt que d’acheter la “bonne conscience” des consommateurs en louant une partie de leurs vêtements, les marques devraient surtout se focaliser sur des vêtements durables et réalisés de manière éthique.
Et il y a de quoi faire : la mode est la deuxième industrie la plus polluante au monde. A titre d’exemple, la confection d’un seul jean nécessite plus de 11.000 litres d’eau. Le Closet, l’une des premières startups à s’être positionnées sur le marché en 2014 prend la mesure de l’enjeu. A l’heure d’aujourd’hui, seuls 10% des 40.000 vêtements disponibles de la startup sont durables. “D’ici à cinq ans, nous ambitionnons de passer sur du 100% responsable. Le public qu’on touche est sensible aux nouveaux modes de consommation”, indique Ralph Mansour, le cofondateur, qui vise 6 millions d’euros de chiffre d’affaires en 2019, près du double de l’année précédente.

La jeune pousse propose des box de vêtements du quotidien qu’on peut garder autant de temps qu’on le souhaite. Dès qu’on n’en veut plus, il suffit de renvoyer la boîte et une nouvelle est alors envoyée. Pas besoin de laver les vêtements, la startup s’occupe du pressing et des retouches. Le tout, pour un abonnement mensuel de 39 euros par mois et de 49 euros pour la formule maternité.
L’écueil de l’achat 
La plupart de ces startups proposent une option d’achat pour leurs abonnées, à un tarif souvent alléchant. “Jusqu’à 80% moins cher que le prix boutique”, indique Ralph Mansour. Environ un tiers de ses clientes passent par la phase d’achat. Un concept qui va pourtant à rebours de l’idée de déconsommation et de l’économie de la fonctionnalité (payer pour l’usage plutôt que la possession). “On est tout à fait d’accord… ce n’est pas quelque chose qu’on avait souhaité”, répond de son côté Clémence Cornet de Bocage. Et d’ajouter : “Mais à partir du moment où la demande vient des clientes, difficile de leur refuser.”
Chez Dresswing, une startup née en 2016, on assume complètement vouloir “réinventer l’expérience d’achat”, explique Delphina Tomaszewska, la fondatrice. Autrement dit : essayer des pièces via la location et si elles plaisent, les acheter. La startup permet à des propriétaires de vêtements de mettre en location une partie de leur dressing. A elles ensuite de remettre en mains propres les vêtements (souvent des pièces de luxe ou originales), aux personnes intéressées.

La startup intervient peu, à part pour le service client et prend une commission de 20% pour chaque location et de 10% pour les ventes. “On ne dit pas aux clientes d’arrêter d’acheter, on dit plutôt d’acheter moins, et mieux en allant un peu moins chez Zara et en louant certains vêtements”, poursuit l’entrepreneuse. Même constat pour la grande distribution : “La mode se cherche un nouveau modèle. Elle expérimente la location par abonnement pour attirer une cible plus jeune”, analyse Cécile Poignant.
Un marché encore balbutiant
Reste que la location de vêtements demeure un marché de niche et d’initiés. La plupart des consommateurs sont des femmes, urbaines, âgées entre 25 et 35 ans, sensibilisées aux nouveaux modes de consommation. En France, certains acteurs, comme l’Habibliothèque ont périclité. La jeune pousse, lancée dès 2014, a été placée l’année dernière en liquidation judiciaire. Avec la location de vêtements, avons-nous atteint les limites de l’économie de la fonctionnalité ? “L’usage a remplacé la possession avec Spotify ou Netflix, sur des biens qui ne vous touchent pas de près. Le vêtement en revanche, revêt de l’intime, du personnel, on le porte sur la peau”, constate Cécile Poignant.
Anahi Nguyen, la cofondatrice de feu Habibliothèque, y voit une autre explication : “En France, la location de vêtements est encore un marché de niche où pour durer dans le temps, il faut de l’argent afin de pouvoir acquérir du stock”, a-t-elle indiqué au site fashionnetwork.com. Et d’ajouter : “Les anciens concurrents de l’Habibliothèque font, comme nous le faisions, de petits chiffres d’affaires. Aux Etats-Unis, Rent the Runway a annoncé cette année (2018, ndlr) avoir atteint la rentabilité. Mais l’entreprise date de 2009 et a levé 200 millions de dollars pour y arriver.”
