The power snatch is the most basic variation of the snatch; the only difference is the barbell is being caught at a different height.   Coaches and athletes have different definitions of what constitutes a “power” receiving position. Anything received with knee flexion of 90 degrees or less is considered a power lift. Others will count only lifts with the thighs above horizontal. Some athletes and clients will also intentionally receive power snatches with a much wider foot stance than in the snatch. The downward movement easier and means that the client or athlete can't catch the lift in a complete squat.   The power snatch can train speed and force production in both the second and third pull by limiting the amount of time and distance the athlete or client has available to get under the bar. The power snatch can be used for lighter training days and does give a client or athlete a different variation. It can be helpful as a part of a learning progression for beginners or a variation for individuals who are not mobile enough to sit in an overhead squat.   Power snatches, generally prescribe with 1-3 reps. They can be prescribed at maximal effort for training or testing at this rep range. Even at maximal weight, the power snatch can serve as a lighter exercise for lighter training days between full heavy snatch days. Not a movement that you would typically see in an Individualized Design Program. Following the correct Program Design Principles, you can take this movement and help deconstruct for athletes and clients to take away the mystery. As a training exercise, it serves weightlifters to train for the lift in competition by training technique, strength, speed, and other qualities needed for the lift. For other athletes, it develops power, speed, precision, and mobility. Programming the snatch varies based on numerous factors such as the clients testing and assessment, where they are currently at in their training years and program, and their goal at that specific moment of the program. Generally speaking, sets will be 1-3 reps anywhere from 70-100%. A client can be training snatch for technique purposes or speed training at lighter weights, power and strength training for the lift at moderate weights, and strength training and testing at heavyweights.
